Meat n' Greet

The rest of the crew assembled on the Observation Deck to meet the latest editions to their numbers. After the revelation that their worlds are gone, many of them are even more eager to see people they knew from home.

Several people are set up near the doors to provide the new people with omnicoms and comm rings. New crew-mates might see a tall man in green armor and snake girl among their number. There are also several authoritative-looking figures ready to introduce themselves.

There's a lot to tell the new people. It's going to be a lot to take in.

[ooc: Only new characters and Command Staff can start new threads for introductions, to limit the number of threads. Everyone else, just tag in and have your guys greet the newbies.]

Eyes growing wide, Sandry tried to picture what the city must look like. Surely it would have the same pulsing walls as the rest of this ship, the same greenish light. It would be a sight to see, to say the very least.

“I can’t wait to see it.”

"I can take you there right now, if you like," Daja offered. "Oh! And you'll need to meet Hiccup - he's my apprentice. In smithing, not magic, but he's very talented. He comes up with the most amazing ideas - I still can't figure out where he gets them all from!"

[identity profile] magic-weaver.livejournal.com 2011-07-06 10:03 am (UTC)(link)
"I would like that," Sandry agreed. Unfortunately, any thought about the city flies right out the window at the mention of Daja's apprentice. Somehow the noble manages to look that much more excited about the prospect of an apprentice. And if Daja of all people said that he had amazing ideas about metalwork, he had to be brilliant.

"What sorts of ideas?"

"He's invented all kinda of mechanical devices - he doesn't have as much artistic flair as I'd like, I must admit, but he's exceptional when it comes to engineering. He's particularly good at combining smithing with other kinds of technology," Daja said, as she walked along with Sandry, stopping once they reached the Transport Tubes. "This is how we'll go down to the City - you can use these to go to all the levels of the ship."

Sandry nodded, already pleased with the idea of this apprentice. He sounded like a wonderful charge for Daja. "And he had training before?"

The tubes, though, are very strange, and thoughts of Hiccup's work are quickly replaced by an obvious wonder toward the system. Tentatively, Sandry reached out to touch the side of one of the tube entrances. "Just how do they work?"

"Yes, he was an apprentice blacksmith back on his own world," Daja explained. "He's got a excellent mind, and he was already a competent smith, but he still needs to improve his technique and skill. He's not a master yet."

She stepped towards the entrance. "You step inside, and call the name of the location you wish to go to. And then...well, Stacy's tentacles will carry you to where you wish to go. It's very strange, but oddly enough to get used to it after a while, in a way. We're going to the City - would you like to try it first, or do you need me to demonstrate?"

"He would make for a terribly boring apprentice if he was a master," Sandry laughed, though most of her attention seemed to be focused on observing the tube. Daja's explanation of its working only served to make it seem more odd than a first glance had. Tentacles didn't sound very fun at all, but if her sister said they were okay then they must have been.

After a moment's debate, she glanced back to Daja. "I could try it, I think. Though..." She frowned, leaning to see if she could look up the tube. "Will it put me in the same part of the city as you?"

[personal profile] fireforger 2011-07-11 08:56 am (UTC)(link)
"That is true! Although even the most skilled smith still has more to learn. Can you imagine if you already knew everything there was to know about weaving and stitching? There would never be anything new!" Daja said, laughing.

"Yes, it will - the tubes only go to one specific part of the City. For the rest, we must walk." She stood back, allowing Sandry room to approach on her own. "Whenever you are ready, Sandry."

[identity profile] magic-weaver.livejournal.com 2011-07-14 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"I don't think I could ever know it all. Lark doesn't even know it all. There is so much just in spinning alone..." Scrunching up her nose, Sandry laughed back at Daja. "I imagine there must be that much more to learn, with all the different metals."

At least they would end up in the same spot, once they arrived at the other end of the tube. It was a small comfort as Sandry stepped forward. "Walking I can handle," she mused, before moving into the tube and following Daja's instructions. A small noise of surprise escaped her as the first tentacle moved, but she was off and moving before there was time to think. It wasn't all bad, and was over far quicker than she had anticipated. Arrival in the city held a wide-eyed Sandry turning to give the tube a small bow and a, "Thank you," before she allowed herself to take the city in.

Oh goodness.

There was, especially when Daja had been able to buy metals she had never even heard of before at XaXing. For now though, she simply waited, allowing Sandry to enter the tubes. Once her sister had disappeared into them, Daja stepped forward. By now the tubes were familiar to her, even if the fact of being carried along by tentacles would never stop being a little strange.

Arriving in the city, Daja stepped forward to stand next to Sandry. She looked out over the City, remembering the first time she had seen this view. "Amazing, isn't it?" she said softly.

[identity profile] magic-weaver.livejournal.com 2011-07-19 09:12 am (UTC)(link)
Sandry could hardly believe her eyes. The cavern was bigger than she could have ever expected, though that might have been in-part to the sky above them. Her eyes lingered above for a moment--how had they gotten the sky and the sun into a cavern!?--before moving to take in the rest of the city.

Well, what of it she could see, at least.

"It's enormous." An understatement. Sandry didn't seem to know where exactly to begin. There were so many differences in architecture alone, she might have spent the entire day just trying to remember them all. "And beautiful. Have you ever been lost?"

"A number of times, yes," Daja said, quirking her lips in amusement. "Thankfully the Omnicomms contain a map of the City. It doesn't mark everything, but it does help you to get your bearings."

Daja paused, taking in the view for a moment, thinking about where they would need to go next. "Would you like to go to the forge?" she asked. "Or perhaps..."

Would Sandry want to see Winding Circle Temple yet?

[identity profile] magic-weaver.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 08:04 am (UTC)(link)
"What else are they capable of?" The Omnicomms were turning out to be quite the useful boxes. Sandry would have to be careful not to go anywhere without hers. There was no doubt in her mind that she would probably get lost several times over.

She was so wrapped up in observing one of the closer buildings that she might have missed Daja's question if she hadn't spent so many ridiculous meetings training herself to allow her ears to stay focused on the conversation even when her mind roamed elsewhere. "Could we see your forge first?" Sandry smiled softly. "I've a feeling I might need to steel myself before seeing Winding Circle." And how empty it probably was.
fireforger: (Pensive)

[personal profile] fireforger 2011-07-22 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
"They can be used to communicate with the rest of the crew," Daja explained. "They can also store information, although I am less familiar with that particular function myself." Daja had a solid grasp of using the omnicomms by now, but she was still in the dark about the more complex parts of the device.

Smiling sadly, Daja nodded. She understood exactly how Sandry felt. "Of course. Seeing Winding Circle...it is hard, to see it so empty, and in such a poor state. But even so, I am glad it is here. At least some part of our home still survives." She paused, the nodded in the direction of one of the streets. "Come on - the forge is this way," she said, setting off.

[identity profile] magic-weaver.livejournal.com 2011-07-29 09:44 am (UTC)(link)
There were so many other questions about the Omnicomms alone that wound their way through Sandry’s head, but she knew they would have plenty of time to discuss them later. For the moment, the want to visit the forge overtook the need for knowing exactly how the boxes--and the city as a whole--worked.

Sandry nodded up at Daja. “It gives us an extra piece of hope, doesn’t it?” If the entire temple was here, maybe it meant that its inhabitants were as well. At least she could still feel Tris and Briar down there, however faint they were. That was enough hope in itself. Smiling, Sandry trotted after Daja toward the forge, eyes and ears taking in everything they could as the two walked. It wasn’t home exactly, but it could be. They could make it.

"Yes, it does," Daja said. Winding Circle was a piece of home. It was something to cling on to, something to remind them of Emelan and everyone in it.

One day, she hoped, Winding Circle would be full of people again.

But first, the forge. Daja led Sandry through the city - quite a hike, but she decided that it was perhaps best to wait a little longer before introducing Sandry to the railway - eventually coming to a medium sized cottage, with a forge chimney attached to one side. Opening the door, Daja ushered Sandry in to a small living area.

"Here we are," Daja whispered. "This is home."

[identity profile] magic-weaver.livejournal.com 2011-09-01 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
On top of everything else, it was probably better that the railway waited for later. Sandry wasn't sure there was much room left in her for all of the excitement in the city. A walk was just as well, and helped her stretch out legs that, she decided, were very cramped indeed from being stuck in that pod for so long.

Home. With a pleased smile, Sandry stepped into the little house and took every inch of it that she could in. Everything here said Daja, from the choice in furniture to the decor to the tools waiting by the door. Here, even in the middle of this strange city in the belly of an even stranger ship, was a little piece of normality. "I love it," she grinned at Daja. "It's wonderful."
fireforger: (Calm smile)

[personal profile] fireforger 2011-09-02 11:13 am (UTC)(link)
Daja couldn't help but take a moment to reflect just how far they'd come - before, when she had returned to Emelan, her decision to buy her own own had divided them, as both she and Sandry had formed their own ideas about where their family would live. But now Daja could welcome Sandry into the home she had made for herself, and she knew that had the roles been reversed, she would have been honoured to live in whatever home Sandry had created for herself.

"I'm glad," she said, smiling and reaching out to place a hand on Sandry's shoulder "Would you like to take a look around? You're lucky, you'll get to pick your room before Tris and Briar," she added, a twinkle in her eye. Their brother and sister might not be awake yet, but with Sandry returned to her...Daja had hope that they too would wake. One day, this house would be home to all of their family.

[identity profile] magic-weaver.livejournal.com 2011-09-06 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
The memory of all that had happened in the last few months at home was still very fresh in Sandry's mind, but she had already begun rekindling her connection with Daja, and her sister's own actions toward her had spoken volumes. Sandry really couldn't think of a better way to wake up than to have Daja here, with a home that the noble was fully ready to accept as her own. Hopefully, when Briar and Tris woke, they would feel the same.

"Serves them right for being late," Sandry laughed as she took in the small room. Of course, she would still keep Briar and Tris in mind while choosing her own room, but it didn't hurt to entertain the thought of First Come, First Serve for a few moments. "I can't wait to see the rest."
