Karaoke Night [OPEN]

Between nearly killing himself trying to help people and his talk with Nathan, Peter was exhausted. Even with his upbeat demeanor, it was hard to not say he felt stressed. His flight-breaks no longer helping, he decided he needed to take a few hours. He found himself at the sensoriums, a place he had heard talked about like the holodeck from Star Trek. As he walked in, it was a blank room. He closed his eyes and thought to himself.

I just need a way to relax.

He suddenly heard music, and opened his eyes to what appeared to be a high class nightclub, but filled with the strangest creatures he had ever seen, even since arriving on the ship. Behind the bar, a green-skinned redhead with horns, more conspicuous for his paisley shirt and purple ascot, was trying to get his attention.

"Hey, kiddo, didn't you hear them call your name?" The demon said, smiling. "You're up, bubbulah. Don't worry, I picked a good song for you." Peter eyed him warily. Wherever this place had come from, it was not his head. But decided not to question it, and went to stand in front of a karaoke machine on stage. He picked up the mike and saw the song, and smiled. He loved this song. EVERYONE loved this song. Luckily, a few years in boy's choir had given him a sense of tune, and puberty had left him with a decent tenor. So, he began to sing.

o/` I can't fight this feeling any longer,
And yet I'm still afraid to let it flow... o/`

That was all it took. As if suddenly injected with 100 ccs of pure rock ballad awesome, Peter closed his eyes and began letting the music take him, eventually rocking out. He had forgotten what it was like, honestly. Forgotten the fun of just letting go and having fun. And as he finished up the REO Speedwagon classic, breathing heavily and feeling alive, he wished he hadn't.

But then he opened his eyes to notice more than just his holographic audience had filtered into the "club".

"Uh... Next?" He said as he hastily replaced the mike and went to get a holo-beer.

That was embarrassing.  He could only hope someone would follow him up and make it slightly less so.

[ooc: Start a subthread with your character approaching the stage and singing a song. Characters can react to other's performances even if they aren't singing themselves. And any song you'd like, Lorne has the entire mutliverse on karaoke. I'm not asking, and neither should you.]

The person approaching the stage then was probably one of the last that any of Stacy's refugees would expect to find in this place. No, they were not seeing a Sensorium-induced illusion. That was really Billy Cranston pulling up a stool and hoisting an acoustic guitar into his lap. Those who have little tolerance for country music would be wise to plug their ears now.

...I don't know what it is about the edge of a cliff
Makes me want to get so close to it
I guess this time I finally slipped
What a foolish way to end it
Maybe that's why I'm back here now
got both feet back on the ground
Hopin' you won't turn me down
When I ask you for forgiveness...

Billy's voice definitely wasn't one of the world's strongest, but the mic gave it a quality of resounding despair. It wasn't an terribly stellar voice, true, yet it got the job done.

Then, the song ended and the lights faded. Stunned at his own bold streak, Billy's face started to flush with embarrassment. As he exited stage left and sought shelter in the crowd, he had a moment to ponder the unpredictability of humans afflicted with emotional turmoil; a curious phenomenon that he was certainly not exempt from.

Yes, believe it or not, even a certain demon was amused by this to get onstage.

It would, of course, be her own preferred way. The light dimmed to a dark green and purple strobe light, and she had her head down. She felt the music start with the trumpet intro, and then the subtle use of the guitar, and her leg stamped in rhyme. She bobbed her head a moment.

I'm all dressed up with nowhere to go
Walkin' with a dead man over my shoulder,

Don't run away its only me

The me-me-me faded, and then the guitars kicked in and so did Alessa, swaying to the music in only the way she could, and because she founded a general jovial song about death very appropriate. She was glad for the effect of her long hair.

There were DEFINITELY more intimidating demons in existance, Peter.

Well... in for a penny, in for a pound. If Wyn was going to make an idiot of herself onstage, she might as well have fun doing it. As she walks onstage, bouncy techno music begins to play-- and she starts to dance.

Kelly had never done this before of course. Heck, she hardly knew any music. The Marines played some in the Pelicans before they were dropped sometimes. Strictly against regs of course. But she hadn't minded. Stepping up on stage she took the mic and cleared her throat. If it was possible, the tall, pale Spartan actually looked slightly embarrassed. Skin flushed as she liften the mic to her mouth and began to sing the only song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIx3m74xExs) that came to mind.

"Home is behind,

"I'll be the first to admit, sometimes this is pretty lame, but it's also an amazing team building exercise. I want everyone, at least once, to get up there and try it."

It wasn't the full team; he hadn't been able to find everyone. But, he did grab who he could, and sent a message out to the others to meet him there for the first 'official' team activity.

He was grinning as he led them in. "Everyone, welcome to Karaoke night. And yes, Rose, you can drink. I think."

He quickly rushed up to the bar to tell them his song and grab the mic as soon as it was open. "Here goes nothing..." It wasn't the kindof stuff he always listened to, but it was still good stuff, and he was in a power ballad (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6U5gJZh5u2Y/) kind of mood.

"Mother mother tell your children

Singing. That was something Khel could still do, and he really needed some cheering up. He wasn't sure what to sing, but he knew the device they were holding must have amplified voices. When he went and took the mic, he simply said, "Surprise me." To his true surprise, he was greeted by a violin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZvZxxE9OX0), and words on a screen nearby. The hint was obvious: he was to sing the words to the tune of the song. As soon as he started, however, he recognized the wry and twisted sense of humor the Sensorium had.

Slobo listened to Static's song, and got up himself.

"This song... It's my life story, short an' sweet. Anyone interrupts me or joins in? I frag ya. Just lemme get it out and off stage." With that, a familiar intro sequence to all came on. And then, unexpectedly, Slobo's normally grated voice elevated into a raspy tenor. It wasn't perfect, but damn if he wasn't hitting at least half the notes, and the emotion seemed genuine, by the fact he had his eyes closed against the lyrics.

Never one to avoid the spotlight, Allen takes the stage again, still with electric guitar, a bit more solemn this time around.

"This is for a special lady who may or may not be in podsleep."

He raises his eyebrows and starts playing along with the recording, complex and improvisational.

I raced along an empty highway.
I chased the dawn
And cursed the new day,
Out of town, till nobody was around.

Love came along, my favorite enemy,
We hit head-on.
Why you befriended me... I don't know.
There's no need for letting go
When you've already lost control.

My life is open wide
The more you live, the less you will die.
Outside, floating free,
I'm finally open to see...
Could you be any more comfort to me?
Could you be any more comfort to me?

Rose hadn't wanted to sing, it brought back memories of sitting at her mothers feet and sing to her. Sweet Lili was gone and she had her childhood wrenched away from her. After that Rose only sang to herself, for herself. So this was going to be something different. Loren seemed to understand, dimming the house lights and bringing up a barstool to the stage, acoustic guitar handed over to the white haired girl.

She made a point to not let her single eye fix on the crowd, she kept it down on the string, her fingers finding the right chords to start, a soft haunting tune pouring out. Her voice, strong, deep and smooth followed after the introductory bar, something that was surprisingly mellow for her reputation.

"No one knows what it's like
To be the bad man
To be the sad man
Behind blue eyes

No one knows what it's like
To be hated
To be fated
To telling only lies

But my dreams
They aren't as empty
As my conscience seems to be

I have hours, only lonely
My love is vengeance
That's never free

No one knows what it's like
To feel these feelings
Like I do
And I blame you

No one bites back as hard
On their anger
None of my pain and woe
Can show through

But my dreams
They aren't as empty
As my conscience seems to be

I have hours, only lonely
My love is vengeance
That's never free

When my fist clenches, crack it open
Before I use it and lose my cool
When I smile, tell me some bad news
Before I laugh and act like a fool

If I swallow anything evil
Put your finger down my throat
If I shiver, please give me a blanket
Keep me warm, let me wear your coat

No one knows what it's like
To be the bad man
To be the sad man
Behind blue eyes"

She didn't wait for an audience reaction, simply handed off the guitar and stepped down moving back to the far end of the bar and ordering another beer...or four.

Slobo did something he normally wouldn't do. Nor would any sane person, who wasn't nearly invulnerable.

He walked up to Rose Wilson, pulled her to face him, then gave her a hug.

After which, he quickly backed off and looked both ways, like he was afraid of people seeing him do that.

"That took guts, and yer song was just as perfect as mine was. So... thanks. I know ya hate trust buildin' exercises, but at least here we get booze, and get ta get things off our chests." He smiled. "Ain't so bad. And I hear sensorium beer don't give ya hangovers."

Dean didn't know anything about this. Least he was pretty sure he hadn't. Still he wasn't really expecting to sing, but his steps lead him toward the microphone. Oh why not?

The music briefly started to play Master of Puppets, until Dean just glared at the sound system behind.

"Dude, really?"

The music abruptly changed to a piano solo and opening guitar riffs.

"
...Carry on my wayward son,
For there'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Now don't you cry no more

Masquerading as a man with a reason
My charade is the event of the season
And if I claim to be a wise man, it surely
means that I don't know
On a stormy sea of moving emotion
Tossed about I'm like a ship on the ocean
I set a course for winds of fortune, but
I hear the voices say
"

This was something that would be one of her first participation with the Outsiders. Katara hadn't really been sure what to sing at first: all the others sung pretty nice songs, some in jest, some, like Rose's, pretty in their way. But with all the feelings she'd been having, with all of the quiet battles she'd been thinking about, she found a song that would make her happy to be a little vulnerable. In that way, she wanted it to be something for her: soft, mournful and beautiful.

The lights dimmed, and it was a dark blue and a soft white.

Lithium, don't wanna lock me up inside
Lithium, don't wanna forget how it feels without
Lithium, I wanna stay in love with my sorrow
Oh, but God I wanna let it go

Come to bed, don't make me sleep alone
Couldn't hide the emptiness, you let it show
Never wanted it to be so cold
Just didn't drink enough to say you love me

I can't hold on to me
Wonder what's wrong with me?

Lithium, don't wanna lock me up inside
Lithium, don't wanna forget how it feels without
Lithium, I wanna stay in love with my sorrow

Don't wanna let it lay me down this time
Drown my will to fly
Here in the darkness I know myself
Can't break free until I let it go, let me go

Darling, I forgive you after all
Anything is better than to be alone
And in the end I guess I had to fall
Always find my place among the ashes

I can't hold on to me
Wonder what's wrong with me?

Lithium, don't wanna lock me up inside
Lithium, don't wanna forget how it feels without
Lithium, stay in love with mmm
I'm gonna let it go

Part of her knew it was for Aang, and part of her knew it was for her world. She couldn't show anyone the true feelings on that, but she'd at least try to sing it the best way she knew how.

It made her feel better anyway.

Well, Katara, you have Billy's ear. Every emotion in her voice twisted through him, every word spoke to a pain he never thought he'd understand until now.

Billy didn't think it would quite appropriate to whoop at the end of the song, choosing instead to clap enthusiastically and to attempt to catch her eye.
