Meet-n-Greet

The rest of the crew assembled on the Observation Deck to meet the latest editions to their numbers. After the revelation that their worlds are gone, many of them are even more eager to see people they knew from home.

Several people are set up near the doors to provide the new people with omnicoms and comm rings. New crew-mates might see a tall man in green armor and snake girl among their number. There are also several authoritative-looking figures ready to introduce themselves.

There's a lot to tell the new people. It's going to be a lot to take in.

[ooc: Only new characters and Command Staff can start new threads for introductions, to limit the number of threads. Everyone else, just tag in and have your guys greet the newbies.]

She began heading back to Alex, but then paused and looked patiently back at the wizard. People who had rats knew them to be smart, and Alice had always been a particularly bright one, even now as she was getting on in her years.

If she couldn't find Alex's old friends, maybe she could bring him some new ones.

[identity profile] for-magic.livejournal.com 2010-10-03 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Aibghalien took the rat's meaning instantly, and immediately followed. In his long and storied experience, this sort of thing was exactly what a person in a strange and unfamiliar environment ought to follow up on.

[identity profile] hack-rat.livejournal.com 2010-10-03 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
The rat lead him out of the obs deck and a little down the hall to a corner. Rather low to the ground a scarred hand with an arm covered by a gray jacket came out from behind the corner to greet the rat along with a quiet, "H-hey, Alice... D-didja find 'em?... G-guess not." All of his friends from home would have known to take the message as a sign of it being received if they had nothing to write back on it with.

[identity profile] for-magic.livejournal.com 2010-10-03 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm sorry, I think I distracted her," Aibghalien said with a slight smile, even if the owner of the arm wasn't visible. "She stopped by me and seemed insistent I follow her."

[identity profile] hack-rat.livejournal.com 2010-10-03 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Alex jumped and gasped, shocked to hear another voice. He peered carefully around the corner from his sitting position, looking far more afraid of a predator than the rat had. His face was also covered in scars, but not nearly as many and most seemed more recent.

He bit his lip, looking the wizard up and down, "Wh-who are you?"

[identity profile] for-magic.livejournal.com 2010-10-03 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
"My name is Aibghalien," the elf said with a letter-perfect bow. As he'd decided, he eschewed his full name and title. "I apologize for disturbing you, but your familiar seemed to want me here."

He was certainly not unkindly as he smiled down.

[identity profile] hack-rat.livejournal.com 2010-10-03 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"F-familiar? Oh!" He must have been from a world that was a bit like... well, so many fantasy games he didn't even know which one to pick. The elf ears should have cued him into that. "Y-you mean Alice." He looked to the rat on his shoulder, "Y-you're still up ta th-these tricks?" He stood up, feeling odd to be sitting when the elf was standing. He scratched at the back of his head with a nervous laugh, "I'm A-Alex." He looked off to the side as he spoke, clearly uncomfortable.

[identity profile] for-magic.livejournal.com 2010-10-04 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm impressed. She's clearly quite intelligent." Aibghalien believed that if he spoke well of the boy's familiar, it would break the ice a bit. "She must be reliable, if you can trust her to find people in a crowd like that."

[identity profile] hack-rat.livejournal.com 2010-10-04 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
Alex blushed, still avoiding eye contact, "Sh-she is. She's r-really smart, b-but she's g-getting older. F-fortunately, she d-doesn' s-seem ta be slowing d-down at all." He smiled and looked to Alice, giving her a pet on the head, "Isn' that r-right girl?"

[identity profile] for-magic.livejournal.com 2010-10-04 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"Rats have so much worse a reputation than they deserve. If they're well cared for, they're cleaner and smarter than any number of things." He knelt down again, offering a hand to Alice once more, if she wanted some affection from the elf as well. "You're lucky to have her here."

[identity profile] hack-rat.livejournal.com 2010-10-04 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"I-I know," he said solemnly. "I d-dunno what I'd do without her."

Clearly he didn't take her presance for granted. Alice merrily grabbed the Elf's fingers and began licking them clean.

[identity profile] for-magic.livejournal.com 2010-10-05 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"I don't know all that much about animals, to be honest," Aibghalien admitted, though Alice's attentions made him smile. "For some reason, that never made its way into my fields of study. Oh, I know enough about them to summon them or charm them or what have you, but that's magic, not academics. At a time like this, I wonder just how much I've been missing out on."

[identity profile] hack-rat.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
"Y-your a wizard?" Well, that explained the robes and the use of the term familiar and the whole elfyness. "I d-don' know that much either, b-but I d-did study a lot about r-rats ta make sure that I c-could take c-care of her properly."

[identity profile] for-magic.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)
"I am," Aibghalien said, with a distinct note of pride in his voice.

"And you clearly studied the right things," he said with a little laugh as the grooming tickled.

[identity profile] hack-rat.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Alex blushed at the complement, "I-I did m-my best." Alice was perfectly happy to keep grooming as long as Aibghalien would let her.

He looked back up to the elf and asked, "Wh-where are you f-from?"

[identity profile] for-magic.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"I come from a land named Anuire, on the continent of Cerilia. It used to be one great country, a very long time ago, but now it's twice-shattered... possibly beyond repair. I've been trying, but..."

He sighed. Such things didn't really matter at the moment, did they.

[identity profile] hack-rat.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"I-I'm sorry." He understood how it was to want to make a place better. It was just such a huge task, it really seemed impossible.

Not to mention, to lose a world you worked so hard to change? It hadn't bothered him too much, only because he had always been working to those ends because of Loretta, even though he rather liked the idea of it being a better place. He just wasn't as invested.

[identity profile] for-magic.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"A hero's work is never done," the wizard said with a shrug. "I've spent so long with the world in turmoil I barely remember what it was like to have peace and quiet. Perhaps this is how things always are -- constant conflict, the world always changing and something drastic always happening."

He sighed, then shook his head with a rueful smile. "Sorry. I didn't mean to wax philosophic."

[identity profile] hack-rat.livejournal.com 2010-10-07 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Alex laughed, "For being in war, i-it's been p-pretty peaceful here, a-actually." He had yet to really face the Ohm. He had only seen problems that came from within the ranks of the crew itself.

[identity profile] for-magic.livejournal.com 2010-10-07 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
"With all these different people around here? I find THAT hard to imagine!" He chuckled -- then paused.

"Or, is it true that the ship stops fights?"

[identity profile] hack-rat.livejournal.com 2010-10-07 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Alex nodded, making making waving motions with his arms straight out to the sides, "Y-yeah, t-tentacle things appear an' p-pull you a-apart." He stopped with the arm motions as he continued, "W-we had a bomb s-scare a wh-while back, but i-it was handled p-pretty quickly. S-some sorta c-creepy mind-controlling parasite thing. They've s-started checking for those now though."

[identity profile] for-magic.livejournal.com 2010-10-07 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
"That's a little alarming." He didn't really intend to clarify which part, if he meant a specific one, though.

"Is this ship really all... biological? It seems there is a great deal of... the electrical devices, as well. They did hand me one almost as soon as I stepped out of the caverns..."

[identity profile] hack-rat.livejournal.com 2010-10-07 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
Alex shrugged, "The ship is alarming, and c-creepy, an' I don' like it. It's all l-living, b-but p-people made electronic devices. I d-do programming f-for some o' 'em. S-still, I don' t-trust the ship a-at all."

Did he forget to mention that he doesn't like the ship?

[identity profile] for-magic.livejournal.com 2010-10-07 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hmm. Perhaps I could trouble you at some point for brief instruction in these... electronic devices, as you say." The elf made something of a face, rather spoiling his image of cultivation and maturity. "My experience with anything... advanced, I suppose, mostly comes from an invading army that kept trying to suck the magic out of my lands and sterilize it."

[identity profile] hack-rat.livejournal.com 2010-10-07 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Alex doesn't look pleased at the idea of an army that sucks magic out. Then again, he doesn't like the idea of any invading force, or anyone trying to force people down for no good reason. Too many shadows came of it to ever be worth the effort. "W-well, I'm d-down in engineering a lot. I-if ya e-ever w-wanna stop by, I c-can show y-you a few things. O-or you c-can c-contact me yourself." He briefly explains how to use the comms to write a locked message, slowly.
