Meet-n-Greet

The rest of the crew assembled on the Observation Deck to meet the latest editions to their numbers. After the revelation that their worlds are gone, many of them are even more eager to see people they knew from home.

Several people are set up near the doors to provide the new people with omnicoms and comm rings. New crew-mates might see a tall man in green armor and snake girl among their number. There are also several authoritative-looking figures ready to introduce themselves.

There's a lot to tell the new people. It's going to be a lot to take in.

[ooc: Only new characters and Command Staff can start new threads for introductions, to limit the number of threads. Everyone else, just tag in and have your guys greet the newbies.]

The Major's shell had an aural acuity far exceeding normal human limits. Her expression didn't betray the surprise at Mindy's tone, speaking now as an equal rather than as what she was— a ten year old girl.

Hm.

"Something like that," Motoko allowed, since she was well-enough trained to act as a sniper at needs, and since her work was tangentially related to Security, "You are?"

Manners, girl.

Yeah, whoever this woman was she was definitely high up on the people that were on the ship. Beastboy had been friendly enough (as impossible as it was that he was on the ship), but this chick, whoever she was, was definitely someone who had experience taking people out. That made her feel at least a little more relaxed.

"Mind Macready," she said, "formerly of Earth, I guess, if what I'm hearing is true. Apparently the worlds we lived in are toast. I've been trying to see how true most of the stuff I've been told is. I guess I'll start with the basics: this ship, its alive, isn't it?"

They told her it was impossible, but that was someone as new as she was.

[identity profile] standaloneshell.livejournal.com 2010-10-03 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Motoko gave her a brief, dry smile. She was American, but that wouldn't count against her in this place, and unwilling to take misdirection. Mindy would do well actually, and here the thought of Bruce and his little protege army crossed her mind.

"I'm Major Kusanagi," she replied politely, "Yes, she's alive. The portions that aren't are grafted directly onto the rest of her, so technically it's a cyborg ship."

One thing Motoko is not: new to this.

[identity profile] hit-girl-mindy.livejournal.com 2010-10-03 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"I thought so," Mindy said, dropping any pretense that she was some befuddled, scared little girl right now. "The moment I got out of the pod, I felt the difference in the air, and it smelled like blood: in my line of work, its something I'm familiar with. So I figured either the ship was stockpiling bodies in the pod popped cavern or it was organic. Both of them are unlikely, but obviously one more than the other."

A cyborg. Oh boy. Here comes something else to add the weird-shit-o-meter. She was really going to have to adjust to this.

"So what else is there? I was just talking to someone who's a cartoon in my world: didn't have the heart to tell him that. Who else is here? Superman? Batman?"

She was joking, of course...right?

[identity profile] standaloneshell.livejournal.com 2010-10-03 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yes, both of them," If there were a dryness competition between her tone and the Sahara, it would be difficult to find the winner.

"If you mean Mr. Logan, he's probably already aware," Garfield Logan being Beast Boy's proper name. Motoko read everyone's file, everyone's, "It's a common problem. You'll get used to it."

Or else you won't and they'll be constantly catching you by surprise, but the Major could already tell that kind of unbalanced wouldn't be to Ms. Macready's tastes. They grow up so much faster, these days.

"Your 'line of work,'" Because really, she had to ask.

[identity profile] hit-girl-mindy.livejournal.com 2010-10-03 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
She would have asked seriously, but judging by this Major's tone, she seemed to be ALWAYS serious. That was something of a comfort, and verified that this wasn't D'Amico's doing: Motoko would definitely have been too smart to be working for a thug like him.

"I usually called him Beastboy, but whatever floats your boat," Mindy said. "It's not a big deal, really, but it does throw someone off. I mean, if what I'm hearing is true, I'm dealing with a ship that houses superheroes. Not exactly something that I can hear and nod like its no big deal."

Especially when you grew up knowing most of these superheroes as a matter of course.

Here, Mindy gave a forced grin. "Well, you know how superheroes have powers, so they can take down villains and still retain their good names? In my world, villains have guns and gangs and torture people, not to mention have law enforcement on payroll. If you're someone who calls themselves a hero, you don't take chances by just knocking them out, you know what I mean?"

[identity profile] standaloneshell.livejournal.com 2010-10-03 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"Already a killer at your tender age?" A thin veneer of sarcasm crept into her tone; it didn't reflect well on Mindy's parents. But then again, to produce a child like this, they'd have to be as damaged as she. Maybe that wasn't so bad.

As a matter of fact, Motoko was not too good to work for organized crime, when times got desperate. It would take a monumental idiot to presume they had any hold on her— on the contrary, she was one of the very few who'd swum in and out of their ranks like a fish, untouched. Of course, there were very very few cops that could hide a mob payoff from the chain-of-command, in those days— all gone, now.

"I'm not a hero," She corrected, finally, "But you'll find that that kind of corruption is pretty much universal, once you get enough people together. That doesn't mean we give them mercy."

"Call it what you want: killer, vigilante justice, whatever," Mindy replied. "No one is looking out for people in my world, because they're too afraid of what can happen to them. To be a hero in my world, you have to look death in the face and laugh. If you can do that, you're suited to live and do what you can. If you can't, you're a chickenshit like the rest of them, and you get under the boot of the maniacs that do whatever they want. Death comes whether you're ten or a hundred, as far as I'm concerned."

She shrugged. "The title is usually something someone throws at you whether you want it or not. But people also need that symbol if they're going to get any courage to begin with. So really, its something you have to choose. So if you have any sort of horror at what I do, save it. I had my reasons for doing it, like any other hero."

Whether she would do it anymore was the question.

[identity profile] standaloneshell.livejournal.com 2010-10-04 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Killer or not, Mindy clearly had a skewed view of what constituted a 'hero'.

"I'm sure you're very brave," and though phrasing it that was made it sound sarcastic, she was sincere enough. She wasn't openly armed, of course, but between the jacket and the gray-black opsec uniform she had several weapons concealed on her person.

"I have no issue with 'what you do,' especially considering the rate of juvenile idiocy onboard," and there was an understatement. A well-trained brat, who knew her limits, Motoko could handle. It was self-righteous, underschooled teenagers like...Well, most of the so-called 'superheros' that rankled, "But you may want to think twice before accepting the label of 'hero,' as more than a formality."

[identity profile] hit-girl-mindy.livejournal.com 2010-10-04 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
She shrugged. "There isn't a lot that scares me anymore, to be honest. I almost was killed, saw some pretty grisly stuff, done some of it. It was something that was expected when I took on the mantel. There aren't too many people that are crazy enough to choose the lifestyle, and even fewer who have the heart to do that."

Mindy held up a hand. "I'm not even sure if I want to do that again. I mean, the last time was what finished things back then, I was almost killed. As for the hero thing, there are people here who have actual superhero powers. Mine relies on artillery and long ranged weapons."

Then she stopped. "What's the big deal about accepting the label hero on this ship?"

[identity profile] standaloneshell.livejournal.com 2010-10-04 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
A child sniper. Oh, Saito will love this.

"Contrary to popular thought, the ability to defy physics doesn't preclude intelligence or decent training," which was the nice way of saying that if she had to talk to Kon-El or either of the Takamichis one more time, one of them was going to get a kryptonite bullet in a body part not of their choosing.

"Or common sense," she amended, "You seem pretty eager to tell all of this to the first adult you meet. If you don't stop protesting so much that you're over and done with, I might think you were looking for a job."

She's joking really. The girl is ten.

[identity profile] hit-girl-mindy.livejournal.com 2010-10-04 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
"Are you serious?" Mindy asked, narrowing her eyes. "That doesn't make any sense. If you don't have either of those things, you tend to get killed. I've seen it happen to people in my world. Somebody is too slow, or they get pulled into a trap, and then they're done. Super powers must really come in handy."

She gave Motoko a hard look. "I'm going to be looking for something to do. It should be pretty obvious why I'm talking to you about it: I DO want a job. It's not like I'm going to be comfortable coasting here when I know there's a crazy alien invasion that goes around killing planets. You look like you might know what someone like me can do."

[identity profile] standaloneshell.livejournal.com 2010-10-04 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Motoko stared back with unblinking red eyes, "So you're assuming that I'm high enough on the chain of command to place newcomers, and that I'm willing or capable of giving out jobs on the say-so of a little girl, to an unproven, unsubtle child."

With a butterfly knife.

"Is that correct?" she asked, folding her arms.

[identity profile] hit-girl-mindy.livejournal.com 2010-10-04 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm saying you look like the type that could point me in the right direction, or believe me, I wouldn't have said anything to you. Trust me, I'm not going to go blabbing about things like this if I didn't think I had a fifty-fifty shot of getting somewhere."

That much was the truth.

"But if you're asking me to prove what I can do, I can definitely show you later. If you just believed me, you would be pretty naive."

And the more she talked to Motoko, the more she was convinced that there was something off about her. She was ignoring it for the time being, she'd figure it out eventually.

[identity profile] standaloneshell.livejournal.com 2010-10-04 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
"Alright," And here Motoko stood apart from the wall and turned to leave. Why the hell not? Worst comes to worse, and she could fob off the girl on the Outsiders, or Grayson, "Meet me in the senoriums in two hours. We'll talk."

[identity profile] hit-girl-mindy.livejournal.com 2010-10-04 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'll do that," Mindy said, sounding just as flippant. She didn't have a whole lot of options as far as she could tell, no matter how Beastboy tried to make them seem viable. She knew as young as she was that the best thing to do was head for what she was good at.

Which was why it was inevitable that she head straight for Weapons and Possessions lockup. The butterfly knife wasn't going to cut it, not by herself. She'd just look like a crazy little girl with a knife too advanced for her. No, she knew there was no avoiding it.

It was time to suit up again.
