'Meat' 'n Greet

The rest of the crew assembled on the Observation Deck to meet the latest editions to their numbers. After the revelation that their worlds are gone, many of them are even more eager to see people they knew from home.

Several people are set up near the doors to provide the new people with omnicoms and comm rings. New crew-mates might see a green-skinned alien and snake girl among their number. There are also several authoritative-looking figures ready to introduce themselves.

There's a lot to tell the new people. It's going to be a lot to take in.

[ooc: Only new characters and Command Staff can start new threads for introductions, to limit the number of threads. Everyone else, just tag in and have your guys greet the newbies.]

He shrugged. "We're a little time-addled right now."

The mage's face fell into a sheepish expression. "That's pretty common. My daughter's a lot older here than I last saw her, so... it kinda takes some getting used to."

"What's it like?" he asked cautiously, still trying to decide how to handle a behind-the-times parent.

Nanoha hesitated for a moment - not because she didn't want to tell Ben, since the boy certainly seemed likable enough, but because it was a hard sentiment to put into words, especially to someone who wasn't familiar with her or Vivio in the first place.

"It's strange," she said after a moment's thought. "As far as Vivio's concerned, I've been there the whole time, but she's four years older than I last saw her. So I... it's silly, because I know I was there for her, but I wish I'd been able to see those four years pass."

"I'm sorry, that might not make any sense. She's just... she grew up a lot."

Ben grimaced. The last thing his father needed months after his mother's funeral was a burden like that. "So if you had a choice," he said slowly, "would you want her to tell you about those four years or not?"

A nod. "Of course I would. I'd want to know everything that I missed. Everything that happened to her, both good and bad. I think most parents would!"

"I might have not seen those years pass but she's still my daughter here. She's just... a bit older."

"Thanks." He gave a small smile. "That helps a lot."

"You're welcome," Nanoha returned his smile warmly. "I'm glad I could help out. And I'm sure your dad'll understand everything, okay? He seems like that kind of person."

"I'll have to introduce you to Vivio, actually! Even if you are a bit older than her."

"How old is she?"

"Oh, she's 9. And yourself?"

It would probably help if Nanoha had clarified that Vivio was adopted, given how young she was, but... well, it really just didn't occur to her anymore.

He cocked an eyebrow, hoping she wasn't implying that he was anywhere as young as her daughter. "Sixteen."

"Ah, really?" She looked bashful. "Well, then you're a lot older than Vivio, aren't you! You're actually closer to me, now that I think about it."

"But, I still think you'd like her. She's a very sweet girl.'

"I haven't been around a lot of kids," Ben noted, thinking of the little girl he'd almost killed on Ziost.

"Oh? Any particular reason, or just... circumstances getting in the way?"

"Busy," he shrugged. Sure, there were plenty of kids hanging around the Temple, but there wasn't a real reason for him to spend time with the younglings.

"Makes sense to me," she chuckled. "Someone your age is probably running around all over the place getting stuff done."

Let's not say anything of the fact that she's just three years older than him, of course.

"I should be running all over the place getting stuff done," he corrected. "Right now, I'm stuck here."

"Well," Nanoha held up a finger, smiling cheerfully. "Just because you're here, doesn't mean you can't run all over the place and get stuff done - it's just going to be ... different stuff, you know?"

"Like what?"

"For one, there are a bunch of departments that you could help in! Your dad helped me set up the Magical Department, and we're always looking for people who have mystical sorts of training to help out!" She ticked it off on her finger. "If you like machines, I'm sure there's plenty of stuff that needs to be kept all working, if you like science you could help out there..."

A pause. "I think you're probably a little bit too young for Leon to take you on for Security, though. But it all depends on what you like to do!"

"You'd be surprised," he said. "What's Security do?"

"Well, they help, you know... keep the peace. Everyone who can needs to be able to fight when it comes down to it, but they're the people in charge of thinking about it most of the time." She looked at him, pursing her lips in thought. "I think he said his minimum cutoff was 18, though."

"I probably have more experience than most of the people on that team."

"You'd be surprised! A lot of people here have been doing this sort of thing for a while. But still," she allowed, "You could always take it up with Leon. He's the department head."
