'Meat' 'n Greet

The rest of the crew assembled on the Observation Deck to meet the latest editions to their numbers. After the revelation that their worlds are gone, many of them are even more eager to see people they knew from home.

Several people are set up near the doors to provide the new people with omnicoms and comm rings. New crew-mates might see a green-skinned alien and snake girl among their number. There are also several authoritative-looking figures ready to introduce themselves.

There's a lot to tell the new people. It's going to be a lot to take in.

[ooc: Only new characters and Command Staff can start new threads for introductions, to limit the number of threads. Everyone else, just tag in and have your guys greet the newbies.]

This gives it a little pause. Luck was superficial, but it acknowledges this information with a nod. "You were granted a mobile platform previously," which in and of itself was surprising to Legion, "Could you not download into a new one?"

[identity profile] domeanthings.livejournal.com 2010-04-02 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"There's no robot around that I could jump into," she says, sounding decidedly grumpy about that fact. "Best I can do is jumping into Grif or Doc's armor and override them."

After a moment's pause, she adds, "So who are you, anyway?"

[identity profile] muchwisdom.livejournal.com 2010-04-02 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"We are geth," it responds solidly. It's quiet for a second longer before it corrects itself, but gives no further explanation. "We are Legion."

It notes her displeasure at the lack of platforms; the inconvenience was understandable, but that she would have a distinct preference was interesting. "This vessel does seem to favor organic structures. We assume 'Grif' and 'Doc' are other AIs on board."

[identity profile] domeanthings.livejournal.com 2010-04-02 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"'We?'" Tex repeats, tilting her head to side a little. "How many AIs have you got in there?"

She shakes her head at the assumption. "They're humans-we were all stuck in the same stupid canyon for awhile. Grif's the whiny one in orange, and Doc's the stupidly cheerful one in purple."

[identity profile] muchwisdom.livejournal.com 2010-04-02 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
"There are 1,183 programs in this platform at this time, though we are together an AI. Individually, we are not," it responds, almost automatically.

"Your tone is not subservient," its voice tone rises just a little-- it might be curious. "Are AIs and organics prone to normal, extended contact in your setting?"

[identity profile] domeanthings.livejournal.com 2010-04-02 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Tex just peers for a long moment at the explanation. "...Okay," she finally says after the pause. "So each is like a brain cell or something, making a whole brain?"

She snorts at the question. "There's no way in hell I'm being subservient, especially to Grif or Doc. And it kinda depends on if you're in the military or not, where I come from. That's where most of them are-the project I was in? Paired up AIs and humans together. Gave us an edge-the AIs were supposed to complement us."

[identity profile] muchwisdom.livejournal.com 2010-04-03 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
"Yes. It may be seen as parts to a whole; without sustaining a large number of 'cells,' our 'brain' would be primitive. We would lack the ability to even speak," it says, shifting slightly as it explains. It sounds neutral and even.

Tex had a great deal of personality-- even more than EDI. "An interesting development. In our last records, humanity was among the races that banned the creation of AIs."

[identity profile] domeanthings.livejournal.com 2010-04-03 01:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"Huh." Tex considers this. "I've never seen an AI that wasn't smart on its own before, but..." She shrugs. "Different universes."

Her head tilts again as she listens. "Where I come from? I think humans are the only species that make AIs. It seems like the aliens like the 'make an even bigger gun' school of tech better. Why'd they ban making AIs?"

[identity profile] muchwisdom.livejournal.com 2010-04-03 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
A nod. "There are single AIs in our universe as well. While viable, we do not understand how you maintain stability alone." Organics would make the connection of 'loneliness.'

It falls silent at the second question; the metal flaps around its optic sensor move. A few garbled noises. "Fear," is the eventual, simple, and cold response.

[identity profile] domeanthings.livejournal.com 2010-04-03 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
She shrugs. "I'm not that alone, usually. Seems like no matter where I am, I've got some idiots to yell at. And before that, I had O'Malley in my head."

The silence earns Legion what could be taken as a curious stare, judging by Tex's body language. "Of what, a 'kill all humans' thing?"

[identity profile] muchwisdom.livejournal.com 2010-04-04 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
A little flash of its headlight precedes its comment: "If possible, please clarify the statement 'in my head.'"

"Organic hardware fears the unknown. Even our creators had never expected us to reach sentience-- in fear, they attempted to shut us down. We retaliated. We are a commonly used example as to why synthetics are dangerous," it says as it repeats her shrugging gesture.

[identity profile] domeanthings.livejournal.com 2010-04-04 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Tex sighs. "Okay, long, weird story made short-I was in the Project Freelancer-the group of humans with AIs, but not on the AI side of things. Before I wound up in this mainframe? As far I knew, I was human. A kind of dead human, but human. And I had an AI implanted in my armor-Omega, but he liked being called O'Malley. And basically? An AI in your armor means it's in your head. Anything you know, they know."

Legion's on story gets a snort from Tex. "So you turn out to be brighter than they expected and they freak out. What the hell were they expecting with AI?"

[identity profile] muchwisdom.livejournal.com 2010-04-04 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
A human turned AI. Even Legion hadn't the faintest how that would work. "An impressive level of co-existence. You were previously the organic of this relationship, but now you are an AI?"

"It may simply be easier to suppress what cannot be understood," its voice is a bit lower, quieter.

[identity profile] domeanthings.livejournal.com 2010-04-04 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
"As far I knew, I was the human. The whole AI mainframe thing? Kind of a surprise." She snorts again. "And anybody I could try and get information out of? Is either in those pods somewhere...or they're gone with the rest of my universe."

Tex gives Legion what could be taken as a level look, even if the helmet hides any real eye contact. "Maybe it's just me, but if you're screwing around with AIs, you should probably understand you're going to get surprised eventually."

[identity profile] muchwisdom.livejournal.com 2010-04-05 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
"Even if you were to learn your origins, there will always be unanswered questions as to your purpose." Vaguely philosophical as the comment may be, Legion doesn't state it as such; the tone of its voice is flat and objective.

"Organics are prone to panic," it responds shortly. "It is the surprise that is dangerous."

[identity profile] domeanthings.livejournal.com 2010-04-05 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Tex lets out a short bark of a laugh. "I'm pretty sure I know what my purpose is. I'm supposed to fight crap. Preferably for a paycheck."

One shoulder rises and falls as Tex shrugs a little. "I still think it's pretty stupid to try to build something with brains in mind and then freak out when it doesn't always act like a good little robot. AIs are like people and anybody who works with them knows it, where I come from. They've got their own personalities."

[identity profile] muchwisdom.livejournal.com 2010-04-05 08:39 am (UTC)(link)
A very krogan mindset, Legion notes. One it really couldn't relate to, but to each their own. "If you believe so, then it is."

It refrains from copying her physical quirk, instead making something that would usually be an 'unconscious,' vague hand motion as it speaks. "We would not describe our case as 'personality,' but we understand your point and agree. A synthetic being is still its own entity; we approve of hearing of a galaxy where this is considered true."

[identity profile] domeanthings.livejournal.com 2010-04-05 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"The AI-human thing's probably not as good as it could be," she admits. "But at least we're all on the same side against the friggin' aliens. That probably helps."
