Welcome to Orongo

Once those who decided to go along on the mission were gathered on the Obs Deck and had time to go over the mission briefing, the detachment procedures began.

As with the missions before, the doors to the Obs Deck closed before it detached itself from Stacy, tethered by a massive umbilical cord. Those who had been on missions before would find the experience familiar if still somewhat unpleasant, but for those of whom this was their first mission, the sudden lack of gravity and lurching feeling as they entered the atmosphere would come as a surprise.

Thankfully though, the ride was quickly over as they landed safely on the planet below, the gravitational dampeners of the Obs Deck gently dropping the crew members back on their feet. One of the walls opened up, forming a ramp to the ground below. There was a sudden, slight gust of air as the door opened as the thick air rushed in. Even so, the air felt quite warm and refreshing.

Looking outside, the crew would see the bright yellow sun looming overhead, quite close in comparison to the sun on most planets. A handful of small, silver clouds dotted the blueish purple sky.

Ahead of them stood a rather impressive looking plateau, surrounded by a tall, ornate stone wall which was covered in tribal markings. Directly ahead was a large gate through the wall, with several small stone buildings in front of it. Beyond the gates, a larger settlement could be seen. Surrounding the plateau and covering the surrounding region were numerous strange, blue and purplish trees and plants.

Miku looked down and fiddled with her necklace, "Yes, I did." She looked up at Steve through her bangs, "What do you think?"

He reached up and scratched the back of his head, somehow managing to avoid blushing. Yet.

"It sounds creepy," he said. "I don't get why we'd have to be married to go into their stupid city. But..."

"But?" Miku lifted her eyebrows. It was a little awkward getting married when they'd only known one another a handful of months, but... at least it would be Steve and not... someone else. As awkward as it was.

"But this is the first mission I've even been able to go on," Steve went on, now looking as sheepish as was normal for him. "And it's not like it's even a real wedding or like it even means anything when we leave."

"So... you're okay with..?" Miku made a gesture to the crowd and temple at large?

"You are right, it's not like it matters, really," Miku nodded. "I guess we should tell them. And... not try to think about the wedding part too much, yes?"

"Yeah," he said. "It's not a big deal. And let's face it, who else would I pretend to get fake-married to?"

"Oh, I don't know. Pakkun, maybe." The nervous weight that had been sitting on her chest lifted. "I'm sure you'd be a lovely couple."

"No way. I'd get on his nerves."

Steve's grin suddenly turned a little more awkward. "I-it's not a big deal for you either, right? I can see how it might be weird."

"It's a little weird," Miku admitted. "But so long as it isn't my real wedding, I'm fine with it." She paused, "Nanoha-chan seemed very excited, though, when I saw her. I wonder why?"

"Yeah. Same here."

Steve brushed his hair our of his face and folded his arms. "I bet it's exciting for some people who are more ready for the real thing... I guess you could take it as seriously as you want."

Wait! Wait! Were they on the same page? Because... Miku shook her head slightly to keep her thoughts from jumbling together into a mass of mental flailing. "I... I guess you could, if you wanted to. Still, I would like something a little more... normal. If we were getting really married - which we're not."

"Yeah, yeah. Normal," he agreed. Why was this all going so awkward all of a sudden? "I mean... well, I bet your idea of a normal wedding probably isn't the same as mine. How do they go in Japan?"

Re: Warm Welcome

[identity profile] ghost-bait.livejournal.com 2011-02-10 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
"It depends. Sometimes we do Western-style weddings, and sometimes we do traditional ones, with the kimono and everything." Miku had a distinct feeling that this was going to be like neither of those options. "I kind of wanted a Western-style wedding." As pretty as all that wedding finery could be, it was so expensive. Mindbogglingly expensive.

"Why?"

Steve turned instantly pink.

"I was just curious!" he said instantly. "I mean, we're way too young to get married! We only just started dating not long ago. It's definitely too early for us to think about that."

More maroon, now. "I never thought about getting married. Most boys don't really."

"R-right! Far, far too early!" Miku pushed her bangs out of her eyes and pointed to some place that was far, far away, pink as pink could be. "I think... I think I'm going to just, go over there and see what needs to be done. A-And then I'll come back!"

Yep, smooth as silk.

"Aaah... okay." Good job Steve! Scared her off! He brushed his hair out of his eyes again just for something to keep him from freaking out.

"I-I'll wait here then! So you- do you really want to get fake married?"

Miku stopped her hasty retreat and smiled at him, "Of course!" At least they didn't have to give out thank you-for-coming gifts at the end, right?

"Okay." He smiled a bit in relief. He wasn't sure what he was relieved about, really, since it wasn't a real wedding after all, so he wouldn't have been offended if she said no...

"Well... cool. This'll be kind of neat, I think. And then we get to go on the mission together."
