Welcome to Orongo

Once those who decided to go along on the mission were gathered on the Obs Deck and had time to go over the mission briefing, the detachment procedures began.

As with the missions before, the doors to the Obs Deck closed before it detached itself from Stacy, tethered by a massive umbilical cord. Those who had been on missions before would find the experience familiar if still somewhat unpleasant, but for those of whom this was their first mission, the sudden lack of gravity and lurching feeling as they entered the atmosphere would come as a surprise.

Thankfully though, the ride was quickly over as they landed safely on the planet below, the gravitational dampeners of the Obs Deck gently dropping the crew members back on their feet. One of the walls opened up, forming a ramp to the ground below. There was a sudden, slight gust of air as the door opened as the thick air rushed in. Even so, the air felt quite warm and refreshing.

Looking outside, the crew would see the bright yellow sun looming overhead, quite close in comparison to the sun on most planets. A handful of small, silver clouds dotted the blueish purple sky.

Ahead of them stood a rather impressive looking plateau, surrounded by a tall, ornate stone wall which was covered in tribal markings. Directly ahead was a large gate through the wall, with several small stone buildings in front of it. Beyond the gates, a larger settlement could be seen. Surrounding the plateau and covering the surrounding region were numerous strange, blue and purplish trees and plants.

Kang laughed, "He's the Captain. He can get away with it. So what's this thing you have for me?"

She was happy for the change of subject. Privately, she thought that marriage was a little much to ask just to get this artifact, whatever it was. Most of their missions had been notoriously unsuccessful, though - they needed a win.

But she let those thoughts get pushed away to the back of her mind and pulled the cube out of her pocket. "I went to Engineering and had this made for you - it's a hologram recorder." She handed it over briskly, a little embarrassed. "Sorry for being a jerk, I guess. Press play."

Kang tilted his head to one side slightly, looking at Trudy, and then the cube. "You'll have to refresh my memory. I don't recall being mad at you for anything." He took the cube and examined it a bit closer, then pushed play.

Trudy just shrugged. She felt bad, even if he wasn't mad.

The image that projected from the small holo-cube was one that Trudy had painstakingly set up in the Sensoriums. She'd had to be pretty stealthy since, in most simulations, the young draconians were climbing all over her within seconds of seeing her. But she'd finally managed to capture about two minutes of the four of them together - wrestling, chasing dust, and generally being adorable.

"No, really. I want to know what this..." Kang trailed off at the image.

His children.

He watched for the entire two minutes without moving or saying a word, and when it switched off, he slowly looked down at the cube. "You had this made for me?"

Trudy resisted the urge to scuff her shoes in the dirt or fiddle with the hem of her tunic. She should have just left it at the tavern with a note. "Yeah, well... you miss them."
governorkang: (Looking up)

Kang took a deep breath, then turned and grabbed Trudy in a rare, full hug, being careful not to crush her. "...thank you."

"Oof!" Trudy said, caught off guard by the hug. Her hands kind of hovered, unsure as to what she should do, until she hugged him back briefly before letting go. "Come on, man, these crazy people are going to think we're getting hitched."

She was smiling, though. It felt good to know that he was a little happier.
governorkang: (This is fun / Go fish!)

[personal profile] governorkang 2011-02-08 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
A little happier was an understatement. Laughing, Kang let Trudy go, "This is... one of the best gifts anyone has ever given me. I mean it. Thank you."
fieldpromoted: (Oh look a smile!)

[personal profile] fieldpromoted 2011-02-08 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
"You're welcome," Trudy said, straightening her uniform. She grinned sheepishly. "I mean, it's a cultural thing that people carry around pictures of their kids. I was going to get you a picture but then I couldn't find a camera, so I shopped around and... this is what Engineering came up with. Pretty neat, isn't it?"
governorkang: (Home / Hatchlings are a handful)

[personal profile] governorkang 2011-02-08 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
"This is so much better than a picture," Kang smiled, glancing down at the cube again. "I still don't know why you felt like you needed to do this, though."
fieldpromoted: (That's the way of the world)

[personal profile] fieldpromoted 2011-02-08 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
"You were feeling down about that dumb planet," she said. "And uh... I was kind of taking advantage of the language barrier. Really taking advantage."

Even though she had known he probably wouldn't still be mad by the time everything got finished, she still felt the need to apologize.
governorkang: (o rly bozak)

[personal profile] governorkang 2011-02-08 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
"Trudy, if I'd really been upset with you for that, you would have known," Kang said, his voice serious.
fieldpromoted: (Made it through)

[personal profile] fieldpromoted 2011-02-08 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
"I know." She did know, really. If Kang had been really upset with her there would have been more yelling. "But it was still kind of shitty - I mean, there was a reason I was using Spanish because I figured you probably wouldn't stand for it if you could understand me-"

Digging a deeper hole here. "Anyway you've had a run of shitty luck with the missions and that probably didn't help. Just accept it, okay?"

There was a definite note of 'could we please stop talking about embarrassing emotional shit before I implode?'
governorkang: (Having fun)

[personal profile] governorkang 2011-02-08 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
Shaking his head, Kang slipped the cube into his pocket, "It wasn't necessary, but... apology accepted." He was going to have to find whoever in Engineering had made it so he could thank them as well.

"At least the planet and the people here seem alright, even with the screwed up rituals."
fieldpromoted: (Bitch please)

[personal profile] fieldpromoted 2011-02-08 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
"Alright?" Trudy asked, incredulous. "Who are you marrying, and did they put something in your water?"

Trudy thought this whole mission was bullshit, thanks.
governorkang: (Neutral)

[personal profile] governorkang 2011-02-08 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Kang snorted, "Look, I'm just trying to find a silver dragon for this cloud. I still have no idea who to pair up with, and I want to get this done and retrieve the damn map so we can get off this planet.
fieldpromoted: (Friendly badass)

[personal profile] fieldpromoted 2011-02-08 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"Thought you weren't a fan of dragons," Trudy said - hey, she couldn't resist some gentle teasing of her own, especially in this situation. "If it turns out we get the map and this crazy marriage ritual does some kind of freaky magic when we're back on the boat I am going to say I told you so. A lot."
governorkang: (Council business)

[personal profile] governorkang 2011-02-08 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
"...it's a saying from home," Kang shrugged. "And other crews have come here before for the same reason. They didn't get the map, but if any freaky magic's going to happen once we're off-planet, I trust Cargn enough that he would tell us. He's not that much of a bastard."
fieldpromoted: (That's the way of the world)

[personal profile] fieldpromoted 2011-02-11 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
"I dunno, Kang," Trudy said. "We don't know much about this Cargn guy. What's he done that's made you trust him?"

She'd take Kang's word for him because Kang was trustworthy, and he had good judgment. But Trudy had only ever seen him walk around being mysterious and keeping his mouth shut. This time might have been a little funny, but who was to say what that guy thought should be common knowledge?
governorkang: (Wary / Sword hilt)

[personal profile] governorkang 2011-02-11 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
"We, ah, talked a bit during the Fairplay thing. I don't trust him with everything," Kang said. "He's got his own agenda, that much is obvious. It just happens to coincide with ours at times."
