Welcome to Orongo

Once those who decided to go along on the mission were gathered on the Obs Deck and had time to go over the mission briefing, the detachment procedures began.

As with the missions before, the doors to the Obs Deck closed before it detached itself from Stacy, tethered by a massive umbilical cord. Those who had been on missions before would find the experience familiar if still somewhat unpleasant, but for those of whom this was their first mission, the sudden lack of gravity and lurching feeling as they entered the atmosphere would come as a surprise.

Thankfully though, the ride was quickly over as they landed safely on the planet below, the gravitational dampeners of the Obs Deck gently dropping the crew members back on their feet. One of the walls opened up, forming a ramp to the ground below. There was a sudden, slight gust of air as the door opened as the thick air rushed in. Even so, the air felt quite warm and refreshing.

Looking outside, the crew would see the bright yellow sun looming overhead, quite close in comparison to the sun on most planets. A handful of small, silver clouds dotted the blueish purple sky.

Ahead of them stood a rather impressive looking plateau, surrounded by a tall, ornate stone wall which was covered in tribal markings. Directly ahead was a large gate through the wall, with several small stone buildings in front of it. Beyond the gates, a larger settlement could be seen. Surrounding the plateau and covering the surrounding region were numerous strange, blue and purplish trees and plants.

Leon took a breath before he began to explain.

"Everything seems fairly straight forward. Turns out the Ritual of Judgment is some kind of musical ceremony, and the Ritual of Joining... is a wedding ceremony."

She kind of just... stared at him for a moment, at that. Musical ceremony, okay, whatever. But a wedding ceremony? She wasn't sure but she almost wished that she'd been right about virgin sacrifices.

"...Are you serious?"
governmentninja: (Facepalm)

"Yeah..." He ran a hand over his face. "Anyone who enters the Sacred Mount, has to be married by the Moai first."

She frowned, tilting her head slightly to the side as she considered that. She almost asked if they really needed whatever stupid thing was in the Sacred Mount, but she kept that to herself, sighing instead and shifting her posture, crossing her arms across her chest.

"So... What are we doing about that?"

He took a deep breath.

"Well... we really only need a handful of people to head to the Sacred Mount. The Elders just want to get the measure of the crew, and anyone who doesn't want to be joined can hang out outside the Mount."

Well, that was the clinical answer, which, of course, didn't address them specifically.
letmelive: (um what)

Claire couldn't help rolling her eyes at him, shifting her weight onto her right leg.

"Leon, you know when I say we I don't mean the crew."

"I know. I just needed about ten more seconds to think." Really, he needed a while to think, but life had a tendency to force him to make decisions sooner.

"What do you want to do?"
letmelive: (moment's pause)

She bit her lip, not really sure how to answer that question. She was silent for a moment while she considered their options. On the one hand, it was probably a good idea for the Captain to be running the mission. On the other hand, this was more or less forced marriage. And Claire hated getting forced into anything, even if it was something part of her wasn't totally hating the idea of.

"You know I love you more than anything," she finally replied, dropping her arms and stepping back towards him again. "But I'd like for any serious commitments we happen to enter at any point in the future to be because we want it. Not because some weird aliens have a ass backwards ritual."
governmentninja: (Thoughtful)

Well, they were of a similar frame of mind about that.

"I'd never order you to marry me. Not that you'd ever listen to me anyway," he stated with a grin, after a moment of consideration. "And I don't want to get married because its part of a mission. I give up enough for this job as it is."
letmelive: (smile)

[personal profile] letmelive 2011-02-07 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Claire looked incredibly relieved to hear him say that, and she smiled, reaching out to take his hands.

"You're cool with just hanging outside while whoever else actually goes through with this does their thing?"
governmentninja: (Not too shabby)

[personal profile] governmentninja 2011-02-07 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, I am," he responded, taking her hands and pulling her closer. "Someone has to keep an eye on the others anyway. Wouldn't want the negotiations to fall apart because someone did something stupid out here."
letmelive: (pull me close)

[personal profile] letmelive 2011-02-08 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
She let him pull her closer, her smile softening.

"That's a very good point, Captain," she replied, leaning against his chest. Now that the weird conversation topic was bridged, she was okay with getting close to him again. "Besides, we'll probably have another chance to charge recklessly into some unknown place for some goofy artifact."
