Welcome to Orongo

Once those who decided to go along on the mission were gathered on the Obs Deck and had time to go over the mission briefing, the detachment procedures began.

As with the missions before, the doors to the Obs Deck closed before it detached itself from Stacy, tethered by a massive umbilical cord. Those who had been on missions before would find the experience familiar if still somewhat unpleasant, but for those of whom this was their first mission, the sudden lack of gravity and lurching feeling as they entered the atmosphere would come as a surprise.

Thankfully though, the ride was quickly over as they landed safely on the planet below, the gravitational dampeners of the Obs Deck gently dropping the crew members back on their feet. One of the walls opened up, forming a ramp to the ground below. There was a sudden, slight gust of air as the door opened as the thick air rushed in. Even so, the air felt quite warm and refreshing.

Looking outside, the crew would see the bright yellow sun looming overhead, quite close in comparison to the sun on most planets. A handful of small, silver clouds dotted the blueish purple sky.

Ahead of them stood a rather impressive looking plateau, surrounded by a tall, ornate stone wall which was covered in tribal markings. Directly ahead was a large gate through the wall, with several small stone buildings in front of it. Beyond the gates, a larger settlement could be seen. Surrounding the plateau and covering the surrounding region were numerous strange, blue and purplish trees and plants.

The reference went straight over his head, but he snorted anyway. "By the way, I ran into someone you know."

[hahaha oh my god XD]

That might not be a good thing for Howard, depending on who it is. The only person he's run into from home is Albert, whom Howard determined a long time ago is only useful for doing other people's brainy busy work. "If it's the zombie from my basement, I'd rather not know. You didn't run into Orc, did you?" There's a trace of hope in his voice.

He shook his head. "No, I'm afraid not. He said his name was Albert."

Howard thinks fast. Albert probably will be none too charitable in his opinion of Howard, and possibly go talking about all that traitor-drug-dealer stuff, so it might be better to discredit the bookworm now, rather than try and deny things later.

Howard deflates a little. "Oh, yeah, Boss Tweed's running around. I mean, there are plenty of worse people from The FAYZ to show up, but Albert wouldn't usually be on my invite list anywhere. Sorry you had to run into him."

"'Boss Tweed'?"

Is that a nickname, a slang term, or something Howard just made up? Actually, Albert hadn't seem to think very highly of Howard. Apparently, the feeling was mutual. And he had mentioned the drug dealing part, although he hadn't gone into much detail. Zouichi wasn't sure if it was true or not, but he assumed that in either case, Howard would insist that it was not.

"He seemed fairly pleasant. And rather intent on reaching the library; I think he said he wanted to do some research and make himself useful."
iselldrugstothecommunity: (You're an idiot.)

"It's a nickname. He has a lot. Boss Tweed, Alberto CEO, Pennywise, Moneybags...the running theme is greed. Once you get past the teacher's pet coating you've just got a chewy moneygrubbing center." Howard sneers. Even if Albert didn't pose a threat to him on Stacy, he still doesn't like the kid ever since the time Howard helped with the fire evacuation and Albert stood aside. Or since Albert refused to reveal the location of his possibly-fictional stash of food to Howard.

"I'm sure he did. He'll probably want to start a new money system so he can hoard everything like he did last time around. You want my advice, just avoid him."

Zouichi looked mildly surprised at the reaction, as Howard had never showed outward hostility towards anyone before. Albert had only displayed mild distate.

"I'll certainly take that under advisement... did he do something to you personally?"
iselldrugstothecommunity: (Are you serious?)

[personal profile] iselldrugstothecommunity 2011-02-07 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Albert's actually not Howard's least favorite person from home (that honor is reserved for Astrid and Basement Zombie Thing), and they actually might agree on more than they disagree on, but pretty much anyone from the FAYZ can torpedo Howard's reputation by telling the right facts, so his reaction is partially out of panic.

"Nah. Me and him butt heads on Council a lot, but he never did anything to me personally. He just stood aside when a bunch of kids died in a fire while I was helping evacuate the avenue, so he's not exactly a stand-up guy. He probably couldn't hurt a guy like you, Zou, but he's not worth the time of day."

"That's... awful," said Zouichi. In fact, it was so awful that he resolved to confront Albert about it when he saw him next, advice or no. He knew that people were not to be held responsible for their crimes before they arrived on the ship, and technically not helping during an emergency wasn't against the law (unless Good Samaritan laws were applicable).

But he personally needed to know whether this was true, or whether Howard was merely giving him his side of the story (he was not so new to human interaction that he discounted the possibility that Howard could be skirting the truth).
iselldrugstothecommunity: (Totally paying attention.)

Oddly enough, out of all the untruths and lies-by-omission Howard's been speaking to everyone, that's one of the few facts that's accurate. "Yeah. He's just out for himself. Don't let the meek, I'm-so-shy-and-scared face fool you."

He shakes his head. "So you have any idea what this artifact thing is?"

[identity profile] zouichi.livejournal.com 2011-02-07 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
He shrugged. "A map? A control mechanism? Divorce papers?"
iselldrugstothecommunity: (Smilie hey brother!)

[personal profile] iselldrugstothecommunity 2011-02-07 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
That gets a laugh out of Howard. "Good one. I'm thinking it might be information. Some kind of weakness for the Ohm. Or blueprints for a weapon. I can't see Spacey Stacy sending everyone out there for something one-of-a-kind if it can't be replicated."
ext_988045: (Zouichi: grim)

[identity profile] zouichi.livejournal.com 2011-02-07 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Zouichi considers this. "If it was a weapon, you'd think that the people here would guard it more closely."

And if it was a particularly big weapon, he wouldn't mind a crack at firing it.

"I suspect it's some sort of mystical artifact, or technological black box. I doubt they'd be so carefree about handing it away if they were aware of its real significance."

[personal profile] iselldrugstothecommunity 2011-02-07 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"So we're taking advantage of them," he says. That bothers him far less than it would most people. "What good would a mystical artifact do for us? I mean, I honestly don't know. We didn't have those back in the FAYZ."

He shook his head. "I'm not very familiar with magic myself. It didn't exist on my Earth, but maybe someone on the ship could make use of it. Maybe it could predict the Ohm's movements or something similar."

"Good point. And at the very least I'd rather have some magic on our side than none."
