Welcome to Orongo

Once those who decided to go along on the mission were gathered on the Obs Deck and had time to go over the mission briefing, the detachment procedures began.

As with the missions before, the doors to the Obs Deck closed before it detached itself from Stacy, tethered by a massive umbilical cord. Those who had been on missions before would find the experience familiar if still somewhat unpleasant, but for those of whom this was their first mission, the sudden lack of gravity and lurching feeling as they entered the atmosphere would come as a surprise.

Thankfully though, the ride was quickly over as they landed safely on the planet below, the gravitational dampeners of the Obs Deck gently dropping the crew members back on their feet. One of the walls opened up, forming a ramp to the ground below. There was a sudden, slight gust of air as the door opened as the thick air rushed in. Even so, the air felt quite warm and refreshing.

Looking outside, the crew would see the bright yellow sun looming overhead, quite close in comparison to the sun on most planets. A handful of small, silver clouds dotted the blueish purple sky.

Ahead of them stood a rather impressive looking plateau, surrounded by a tall, ornate stone wall which was covered in tribal markings. Directly ahead was a large gate through the wall, with several small stone buildings in front of it. Beyond the gates, a larger settlement could be seen. Surrounding the plateau and covering the surrounding region were numerous strange, blue and purplish trees and plants.

"Just about," the Doctor lies.

Honestly, you could never get the poking out of your system, the Doctor looking up from where he's crouched overturning a rock, gazing up at Jamie. The look he gives his friend is both a mix of wondering just where, exactly, Jamie's own sense of adventure took off to and why he isn't kneeling next to him overturning his own rocks. There're plenty of rocks to go around and he's even putting them exactly where he found them. In fact, Jamie could even check out his own rock, if he wants.

The Doctor dusts his hands off, finally shoving himself to his feet. Adjusting his jacket, he brushes off any remnant dirt on his trousers.

"Get a look around?"

The look Jamie gives back is very clearly one that indicates that the reason Jamie isn't overturning his own rocks is because they're rocks. And while, admittedly, they've been useful in the past, the fact is...they're still rocks. So, while he's willing to give the Doctor's rock a cursory glance, he's going to pass on looking under his own.

"Aye. I did. Had a wee bit of a conversation, too. What are ye doing over here, anyway? I thought you'd be over looking at the wall." Jamie nods over at the rather large piece of stone - you know, the one with all the tribal markings on it. He would have thought that would have been more interesting than some small wee stone with nothing underneath, surely.

Shame. Jamie's missing out.

"I'm getting to that. Thought I'd have a look here first," the Doctor has learned several interesting things from the rock but this planet being in another dimension does tend to skew one's point of reference. "Conversation? Anything useful or was it 'the sky is nice out'?"

Not that it isn't true but the question he's asking is: important conversation with anything interesting or not?

Well, maybe if it was a particularly interesting looking rock, he might change his mind. Like that mica. That was useful, too, he remembers. These don't seem to be quite as much, at least to the naked eye.

The Doctor probably knows some use for them, though, knowing him. He idly nudges one of the rocks with the toe of his hiking boot.

"It was one of the other crew. A lassie with a jacket." In other words, no, nothing useful. "She seemed a wee bit..." Jamie shrugged. "Like the a lot of rest of us."

Not really knowing what exactly is going on, and not entirely happy about it.

"One of the crew. Or replacement crew, whether she planned it or not," the Doctor finishes up for Jamie. "Right. So in other words, I've been much more successful with my rocks than you have with your 'lassie in a jacket'."

If she'd said anything, the Doctor's certain Jamie would have had more to say. Probably purely human conversations, then. Or maybe Jamie's idea of what's relevant is completely different from his.

"Oh, aye?" Jamie continues to poke at the rock with his boot, but gives the Doctor a rather skeptical look. "And what did ye find out with your wee rocks, then?"

Purely human conversations would cover it fairly well, being that Jamie's human. He assumes the lassie was too, but who really knows there. "I'd say we'll not get any real answers until we go talk to the priests."

What did he find from the rocks? Probably something more useful than debating the blueness of the sky (a personal favorite of humans). The Doctor stared up indignantly at Jamie. "I found plenty, and I'm sure I could find out a lot more if I could take one back to the TARDIS for further study."

He's just...not going to mention that everything he's discovered so far is by sheer absence: he's learning what the rock Isn't made of because he can't identify any of the substances and it's going very much back to basics by looking and feeling it. Of course Jamie might not quite see it that way. The Doctor does have to agree with one thing: the priests are probably their best direction to go with.

"Good point," the Doctor says, willing to drop discussions about rocks for priests. "Going to be interesting to see what the rituals look like."

"Aye, interesting," Jamie says dryly. It's not the word he would use, but then again, the Doctor will likely find whatever they wind up being to be actually be interesting. Unlike Jamie, who isn't entirely convinced yet that things won't end badly.

Still, he's willing go talk to the priests, even if he knows he's likely going to wind up standing around while the Doctor does all the questioning. The Doctor's rather better than him at that anyway.

"Let's go, then," he comments, waiting for the Doctor to start off in that direction. Once he does, Jamie stays back just long enough to pick up one of the rocks. It's smaller than the ones the Doctor was turning over, but it fits nicely in his sporran. After that's done, he hurries to catch up with the Time Lord.

If he gets to keep the stone, he thinks, he'll surprise the Doctor with it later.
