Welcome to Orongo

Once those who decided to go along on the mission were gathered on the Obs Deck and had time to go over the mission briefing, the detachment procedures began.

As with the missions before, the doors to the Obs Deck closed before it detached itself from Stacy, tethered by a massive umbilical cord. Those who had been on missions before would find the experience familiar if still somewhat unpleasant, but for those of whom this was their first mission, the sudden lack of gravity and lurching feeling as they entered the atmosphere would come as a surprise.

Thankfully though, the ride was quickly over as they landed safely on the planet below, the gravitational dampeners of the Obs Deck gently dropping the crew members back on their feet. One of the walls opened up, forming a ramp to the ground below. There was a sudden, slight gust of air as the door opened as the thick air rushed in. Even so, the air felt quite warm and refreshing.

Looking outside, the crew would see the bright yellow sun looming overhead, quite close in comparison to the sun on most planets. A handful of small, silver clouds dotted the blueish purple sky.

Ahead of them stood a rather impressive looking plateau, surrounded by a tall, ornate stone wall which was covered in tribal markings. Directly ahead was a large gate through the wall, with several small stone buildings in front of it. Beyond the gates, a larger settlement could be seen. Surrounding the plateau and covering the surrounding region were numerous strange, blue and purplish trees and plants.

Billy tried to take a calming breath, but it came out rather forceful-sounding.

"And it's because I like her that I won't be engaging her intimately after the second date," he huffed. "I don't want to scare her."

As they kept talking, he seemed to calm down a little. "I've suspected that we're both dancing around starting a relationship for a few days. I might just have to go for the golden ring."

A mental image of finally giving in and kissing her on whatever the equivalent of the altar is filled his mind. Soon, the thought calmed him down enough to remember that the attention didn't have to be laser-focused on him. "Who are your partners, Jamie and Kaylee?"

Well, Billy does have a point there. Ronnae did seem a little on the shy side, and while he doesn't really think that she would be scared off, maybe it would be better to go a little slower.

Accordingly, he backs off, simply nodding to Billy's statement rather than making cracks about the ring. And things seem fine now...that is, until Billy mentions Jamie and Kaylee's partner. Jamie is fairly sure who Kaylee's going to pick, and while he might wish it to be otherwise, it's not his place to say.

Besides, he's already picked the...uh-oh. Jamie's eyes widen as he remembers the conversation back on the Obs Deck with the Doctor.

"Er...I'd not say I picked a partner, so much..."

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2011-02-06 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Kaylee doesn't really have room to talk here. She and Dean were intimate long before they started dating. Of course, she'd spent more than enough time courting Simon and getting nowhere, so her perception of the whole dating thing is a bit...skewed.

"Don't think you could hardly scare a mouse, Billy. Too nice of a guy for that."

Surprisingly, she really does have to think about that last bit. She assumes it'll probably be Dean, but they haven't exactly talked it over, and there's no telling how comfortable he'll be with the situation. "Don't right know just yet... Who've you got, Jamie?"

Billy is relieved. They're finally backing off of him. Now all he has to focus on is the possible moment with Ronnie coming up.

He slightly resents the statement that he can't even scare a mouse, but he'll happily ignore it in favor of questioning his friends. "What's wrong, Jamie? Did you ask the Doctor?"

...yup. 'Partner you trust and care about' indeed.'

Amazing, isn't it, just how quickly Jamie's amusement vanishes when the shoe's on the other foot. He's definitely looking disgruntled, and they haven't even started teasing him yet.

"I didn't ask him," Jamie retorts. No, he flat out said that he was going to go with him. "Look, ye don't know how he gets when he's off on some new planet. Someone's got to look out for him."

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2011-02-06 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"The Doctor?"

Kaylee seems to have absorbed Jamie's amusement. Covering her mouth with her hand so it's not too obvious that she's trying not to laugh, she leans against the nearest tree and just watches them.

"Don't know which one of you's more adorable when you're flustered."

Billy resembles that remark. And resents it too. But at least the spotlight's not on him anymore!

"I presume you won't be 'getting out your excitement' together after the ceremony. But at least he'll be safe with you," he deadpanned.

"I am not marrying the Doctor!" Jamie folds his arms against his chest, fixing them both with a very determined - and stubborn - look.

He's fairly sure he won't be able to talk the Doctor out of going through with the rituals, but there's got to be some other option.

"Besides, we can't get married anyway. He's not a lassie."

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2011-02-07 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
"Not like it's unheard of, Jamie, men marryin' other menfolk." At least, not in her time it isn't. But Jamie's missing a few centuries on that comparison.

She shrugs. "If it'll make you feel better, we'll find you a nice gal after the mission."

[personal profile] morphitudinous 2011-02-07 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Billy nodded in agreement. Okay, so the marrying of other men was still forbidden in most places in his time, but they could certainly have relationships.

"Yeah, I'm sure someone as kind and appealing as you will find someone," Billy tried to reassure, clapping Jamie on the shoulder.

[personal profile] bonnypiperlad 2011-02-07 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, in my day there was no such thing." Not to say the relationships didn't exist, but there certainly wasn't the level of acceptance that exists in Kaylee's time - or even in Billy's. Definitely not marriage.

Jamie's slightly mollified by Kaylee's words and Billy's gesture - although he's not entirely convinced they're still not trying to pick on him. Still, he looks considerably less grumbly now.

"Aye, well," he says. "Maybe so. But don't we have to get through that judgment thing first anyway?"

"Probably."

Speak of the devil. The Doctor has a habit of simply popping up where he simply wasn't there before, the Doctor at Billy's shoulder. There's no telling exactly how long he's been there already. Inviting himself in, as he always does, the Doctor gives the little band of humans a grin that's anything but worried. Marriage ceremonial, eh? He isn't terribly concerned. If he can handle Amy's and all those weddings in the past, he can certainly handle one here. Besides, he suspects this will be one of those things that don't count (no real chapel, right?) and seeing as Jamie isn't going to be phoning him every two seconds, he could say there're worse people to be paired up with.

The Doctor moves to stand next to Jamie, clapping him on the shoulder, making up for his grumpiness.

"I'm sure it'll be very educational." Although the last time someone had sang him a song of spirit, it was...The Doctor looks around, just a quick glance. No Ood. He has to say that's a relief. He'd gotten used to this body, after all, even if it's all arms and knees, nevermind the hair. "Just follow my lead. Don't worry, I've sat through plenty of weddings."

The Doctor turns to Jamie's friends, taking in Billy and Kaylee. Now he hadn't been there for the entire conversation, so maybe he missed this:

"So what about the two of you? Partnered together, are you?" The Doctor ventures a guess.

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2011-02-07 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
The Doctor's sudden appearance more than takes care of anything Kaylee was about to say. He's perfectly right--it'll be a fantastic learning experience for everyone involved, and there will more than likely be a way to annul any marriages that people don't want to keep afterward.

"Sure we'll learn plenty, even if it'll be awkward for most. Don't worry so, Jamie."

At the Doctor's last question, though, Kaylee could only stare at Billy for a few seconds before bursting out into giggles again. "'Fraid not. Billy's got himself a gal already~"

Billy paled. How long had the Doctor been next to him---crud, did he hear those shots about working off extra energy? Best to gloss over it and deal with the present.

"It's not exactly the sort of education I normally pursue," Billy muttered, pausing to take it all in. But it would be fine. He was convinced then that Jamie and the Doctor would get through this just fine.

But first? Billy suddenly had to glare at Kaylee and fight down an embarrassed flush. "Right, I'm marrying Ronnie," he explained, looking off to the side to catch a glimpse of his future girlfriend. "Kaylee has no trouble at all with finding a partner."
bonnypiperlad: (annoyed)

[personal profile] bonnypiperlad 2011-02-07 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's just perfect. Trust the Doctor to show up right now. Jamie's mouth pulls off to the side as he's clapped on the shoulder, and stays that way right up until Billy's comment. Then, if anything, it gets deeper. That really does not help Jamie's mindset right now, and he's feeling a touch resentful at the moment.

He knows, though, that it's important that they cooperate so they can get to what they need. And...he supposes he's not winding up with some complete stranger. The fact that it's the Doctor does help things a bit. There's worse people to get married to. Besides, it's not like they have to stay married. Or go off and work off any extra energy, come to think about it.

"Och, fine," he finally says, although he's not sounding thrilled about it. "I'll marry ye, Doctor." Abruptly, he turns to face the Time Lord and points a finger at him. "But no dressing me up like a lassie this time, do ye hear me?"

"See, that wasn't so bad," the Doctor grins.

His eyes flick down to the kilt when Jamie tries to shake a finger at him and get stern. Something about wearing a dress. The Doctor is almost tempted to point out that he's in some ways almost there with the kilt but...actually, he'll never admit this, but there's been some days were he used to think Jamie had a good idea with the kilt. Good draft, very airy. But he's stuck with the plantsuit and his clothes and Jamie has his well-taken care of kilt and they're going to get married. Sort've.

The Doctor has to admit, he never could have predicted getting (temporarily) married to an ex-dead man.

Just when sometimes he thinks the universe can't surprise him anymore.

The Doctor pats Jamie's shoulder to encourage him, even if Jamie's determined to do the frowning for everyone in the little group and he's actually doing a very good job, too. Jamie might not be able to hack his way out of a wooden box but it's not like he isn't talented in other aspects. This, for example. And he's got a very good aim. Among other things. The Doctor drops his hand from Jamie's shoulder, looking from Kaylee to Billy back to Kaylee again, following their exchange as if it's a somewhat interesting table tennis match.

"It does explain why there's so many of us together," the Doctor says, thinking outloud. "Better chances of getting whatever this artifact is if there are more pairings. Couplings. Whatever you feel like calling it."

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2011-02-07 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
"You don't know that," she replies to Billy, arms crossed over her chest. "Ain't talked to Dean yet, and he's...not so keen on any ideas of settlin', I don't think. Might surprise you yet."

Oh, but do her eyebrows go up when Jamie starts talking about dressing like a girl. "Again, Jamie?" she asks, genuinely curious. "It's happened before, has it?"

Billy concedes that much is true, but he thinks Kaylee will be just fine. Soon he has to hide a smile at the fact Kaylee so kindly pointed out.

"There were certainly enough dresses to go around in the wardrobe," Billy commented idly, but he did feel bad for Jamie. Didn't want to push too far, lest someone decide it would be grand to force him in a dress too.

"But I doubt anyone will have to wear one. Don't worry."

There really are times that Jamie should think before opening his mouth, and this is one of those times. This time, his expression is rather less actually cranky and rather more kicking-himself-for-opening-his-mouth cranky. Given time, his face might almost go back to normal here.

"Aye," he admits. "They were disguises, ye see." That's the important part, of course. It's not like Jamie willingly dresses up in gowns for a lark, kilt or no. There is a very large difference, in his mind, between the two. Even if no one else ever seems to notice it.

"And Dean would be daft if he didn't marry ye," he adds to Kaylee. It's meant to be an aside, but there a very subtle change in his tone. For a moment, it's much softer than it was before - but then it's gone again as he continues. "The Doctor's right. The more people that can get through this, the better chance we have of getting this artifact thing."

And there's the famous human penchant for repeating the obvious. Not that the Doctor faults Jamie for it: in fact he might have even missed Jamie saying exactly what he just said, without realizing just how much. After all, it wasn't just a few faces ago to him. The look the Doctor throws at Jamie is fond for a moment before he snaps to business.

And yes, Billy's completely right. If they ever do need to resort to disguises, the wardrobe is probably up to the challenge.

"Thank you, Jamie," the Doctor says, looking at the little party all assembled. It's much too small to call a proper assembly, however. "Still, lovely planet as this is, probably should stick in touch. Phone each other in case you see anything interesting."

And he doesn't just mean "interesting" as in experiencing a new planet's rituals and cultures type of interesting. The Doctor trusts that two perfectly capable engineers and Jamie will have it under control. From what he's seen of Kaylee and Billy, they're capable, observant human beings. And Jamie's Jamie. Really all that needs to be said on the matter.

Disguises, right. The grinning just keeps on, disguises or not. It isn't quite a making-fun type of grin anymore, though. This one's more fond memories. Mal dressing as Jayne's wife for a mission, that sort of thing. Good, funny little memories of home.

Kaylee snaps back to the present just in time to hear Jamie's comment on Dean, and she can't help but turn a little pink. "We'll see. He's made it plenty clear he ain't the house-n-home type." As much as she thinks he'd be good at it. Stubborn men and their even more stubborn thoughts, leave it to a Winchester.

Oh, but right, there's an actual mission going isn't there. She nods in agreement with the Doctor, looking back toward the wall. No telling what waits on the other side of that thing for them, and there's really only one way to tell. "Stick close to your partner, too. Don't want folk gettin' lost in there. No tellin' what's waiting, shiny as the place seems."
morphitudinous: (Silly)

[personal profile] morphitudinous 2011-02-07 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Billy agrees. "We haven't had a mission avoid disaster entirely yet. I'll signal if I find anything," he muttered, turning the comm ring on the second finger of his left hand. Or...no, he should probably put it on his right hand now. The left's where wedding rings go, isn't it?

He shuffles the ring to his other hand. "I don't think staying close will be a problem, right?"
bonnypiperlad: (So...)

[personal profile] bonnypiperlad 2011-02-08 08:32 am (UTC)(link)
That stating the obvious may have possibly been on purpose on Jamie's part, but he's not letting on either way.

"Aye," he agrees, looking down at his own comm ring. He's always worn it on the right hand, so he doesn't have to move that at least. "Don't worry. I'll not wander off."

Well, probably not. He's not terribly good at that, but he's definitely got a reason to try, at least.

"Come on, Doctor, let's go."
