Welcome to Orongo

Once those who decided to go along on the mission were gathered on the Obs Deck and had time to go over the mission briefing, the detachment procedures began.

As with the missions before, the doors to the Obs Deck closed before it detached itself from Stacy, tethered by a massive umbilical cord. Those who had been on missions before would find the experience familiar if still somewhat unpleasant, but for those of whom this was their first mission, the sudden lack of gravity and lurching feeling as they entered the atmosphere would come as a surprise.

Thankfully though, the ride was quickly over as they landed safely on the planet below, the gravitational dampeners of the Obs Deck gently dropping the crew members back on their feet. One of the walls opened up, forming a ramp to the ground below. There was a sudden, slight gust of air as the door opened as the thick air rushed in. Even so, the air felt quite warm and refreshing.

Looking outside, the crew would see the bright yellow sun looming overhead, quite close in comparison to the sun on most planets. A handful of small, silver clouds dotted the blueish purple sky.

Ahead of them stood a rather impressive looking plateau, surrounded by a tall, ornate stone wall which was covered in tribal markings. Directly ahead was a large gate through the wall, with several small stone buildings in front of it. Beyond the gates, a larger settlement could be seen. Surrounding the plateau and covering the surrounding region were numerous strange, blue and purplish trees and plants.

"Thank you sir," Billy replied after the others had finished---he'd been slightly distracted by a particularly interesting tree, therefore he hadn't quite heard everything that was being said.

"I just have one question at the moment. Is participation in the joining ritual mandatory after we have been judged?"

He's...just a little nervous, because certain clues in the vicinity have pointed to the possibility that it's far more intimately involved than he's comfortable with. The happy couples leaving 'join'? And there are festivities? Definitely a possibility that he won't like it.

"Understood."

Billy had to consider how to phrase this carefully. He didn't want to offend the people, but how far would this go? One glance back at Ronnie reassured him enough to keep talking.

"I'm not holy in any sense," Billy explained rather quickly. Him as a holy man---ha! "I've just been taught by past experience to worry about what this might entail. I apologize."

Alex happened to notice Billy first and creeped up next to him. He had a question, but couldn't find the voice to ask them. Talking to other crew members was one thing, but as humanish as this person looked, he was still not a part of the crew and very very official.

He tugged at Billy's shirt and passed Billy his omnicomm, which had the question, "What happens if you fail at the judging thing?" written on it.
morphitudinous: (Are you reading that correctly?)

When Billy had their answer, he led Alex to a spot away from the crowd to discuss it.

"So what do you think this might be?"
morphitudinous: (...what in the name of)

[personal profile] morphitudinous 2011-02-06 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"We have no idea what we're expected to do here," Billy explained, feeling a tug on his shirt and---oh, hello Alex. One glance down at the omnicom confirms another worry the crew has.

"Everyone coming and going appears to be happy, but all we've been told is that we'll need a partner we trust and care about. I believe I have one, but I don't know what we need to do. We'll try our best, though."

Pause. Right, time to ask the omnicom question. "But if we fail the judgment, what happens to us?"

"He seems fond of them," Billy sighed. "He told us that we're not permitted to know, but thank you."

Well, it helps somewhat.Time to turn to Alex and discuss things.

Ronnae walked near the two, starting to feel the uneasiness of everyone starting to group up curiously in front of the gracious host. She gave a nervous smiled before pulling her hood up, only letting her two ponytails drape in front of her.
morphitudinous: (A cannon? Really?)

[personal profile] morphitudinous 2011-02-06 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Billy turned to her, quietly dipping his head so that he could see her. "Did you learn anything else?"

Alex went to pet Alice, but realized that for safety he had left her on the ship with his other shirt and a cracked door so she could find a friend if she needed.

Instead he turned to fiddling with his zipper. Billy was just surrounded with nervous 17 year olds.

She shook her head lightly. "Not mu-much other than Sir Cargn was playing tricks. He coulda told us what was going on, but I gu-guess he had his reasons. He seems to be an able officer. Other than that..." She lowers her voice a bit more to not disturb the others, or garner attention. "The hosts seem friendly enough. Hopefully it will all go nicely without anyone getting hurt or hostilities arising." She kept her head down slightly trying to keep her focus on the ground, even if her ears twitched picking up the commotion.
morphitudinous: (Serious)

Billy sighed. He was nervous about this too, but honestly, seeing them more worried than he was was enough to get him to gather up his courage.

He placed one hand on each of their shoulders and squeezed.

"I think we'll be all right. We have people we can trust and a strong team. Given the attitudes of the people coming and going, Cargn, and the locals...I don't think it will be terrible."

[identity profile] hack-rat.livejournal.com 2011-02-06 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Alex was doing a lot better with the touching recently, even though he still showed discomfort and a bit of fear. He smiled at Billy though and nodded. "I h-hope not. It seems l-like people are nice enough h-here." Really, he was not keen on the idea of fighting. At all.

[identity profile] ronnae.livejournal.com 2011-02-06 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Ronnie nodded. "I guess." She smiled up shyly."You're right. After all we're all here right?" She nodded happily.

"Right! We'll be fine."

Billy looked more confident than he felt, but he was somewhat confident. They were all together.

[identity profile] hack-rat.livejournal.com 2011-02-06 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Alex breathed a bit of a sigh of relief, looking up to Billy. So, if they weren't judged favourably, the only thing would be that they couldn't help with negotiation.
