Sooo...Meet-y

The rest of the crew assembled on the Observation Deck to meet the latest editions to their number. After the recent revelation, many of them were even more eager to see people they knew from home.

Brainiac 5 and Sensor were set up near the doors to provide the new people with omnicoms and comm rings.

There's a lot to tell the new people. It's going to be a lot to take in.

Mal looked up, as someone else walked up and started talking to him. "Can't say I have, 'cause I really don't know what I'm lookin' for." This was followed by a brief awkward pause. "Am I supposed to be looking for somethin'?"

[identity profile] deputyjo.livejournal.com 2009-12-01 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well answers maybe? Maybe a drink or two?" Jo shrugged. "I know that's what I wanted when I came out of the goo pod." She grinned again and stuck her hand out to him. "I'm Jo Lupo by the way. I'm part of the Security team here on the ship."

[identity profile] am-alwaysfree.livejournal.com 2009-12-01 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"Now you mention it, I wouldn't mind findin' both." He smiled slightly. "May as well start with you, unless you figure there's someone better to be askin'." He took her hand and gave it a hearty shake. "Captain Mal Reynolds. Nice to meet you."

[identity profile] deputyjo.livejournal.com 2009-12-01 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well," Jo tilted her head a little to the side. "There are people who could probably explain things a lot better than I have...." Man, she needed to stop offering to explain things.

"But long story short? We've all been pulled from different worlds, different realities even and brought here because our universes were all destroyed by some alien bug race. We're suppose to work together to try to right the crap they did... And so. Here we are. Aren't we lucky?" Yes, that last part was complete sarcasm.

[identity profile] am-alwaysfree.livejournal.com 2009-12-01 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Mal was about to comment on what Jo had first said, but then the explanation that followed sunk in and he forgot what he was about to say. "So you're tellin' me that everythin' we know, everythin' we've left behind's just been destroyed?" Suddenly, Mal wasn't so relaxed; in fact, everything about him radiated tension. "What about the people who were livin' there? And how exactly are we supposed to fix that?"

He didn't comment on her sarcastic comment, being too busy clenching his fists.

[identity profile] ranger-jo.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeeeeeeeah," Jo said slowly, eyeing Mal. "I know it's a lot to take in. But it's what we've been told. Look, maybe some of the people from your universe or whatever are down in the pods. We don't know and won't find out until they pop. It sucks, but it's the way things work here."

She offered him a small smile. "Look, I know what you're feeling. You're pissed and probably wanna beat the crap out of something. I felt, feel the same way. So far I'm the only person from my version of Earth and it sucks."

She thought for a moment. "Well I think we're suppose to fight those bug aliens. I'm not exactly sure how fighting them is suppose to right things, but it is. At least that's what we've been told."

[identity profile] am-alwaysfree.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Mal stared Jo down, carefully taking in everything she was saying. "Yeah, it is a lot to take in, and I don't quite know how to absorb it all. I get it that we can't know everythin', but knowin' nothin'? That don't sit well with me."

He looked at her, unsmiling. "I don't want to think about the world bein' destroyed, so if all there is to get my mind off things is fightin'... Well, that works for me." Then, looking sidelong at her, he posed another question, "How do we go about fightin' these things? There some sort of organization?"

[identity profile] ranger-jo.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
"Well we know more now that when I first got here. Back then we were just told we'd been picked to be part of some great purpose." Jo explained, knowing it probably didn't help things much, but she was trying here.

Jo wasn't normally a talky person, she was more of an action one. And having to explain all of this was getting really hard.

"Uh, I'm guessing Stacy, that's the ship's name, will take us where we need to go." Translation, she had no idea. "And we do have some organization around here. We have a command crew."

She paused and pointed over to Captain Picard. "That's Captain Picard, he's, well the Captain and in charge of things. Leon's...around here somewhere, he's in charge of security. We have people in charge of Medical and Science and Engineering. So, yeah. I mean, I think we've got it together for the most part."

[identity profile] am-alwaysfree.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, you're right there, I guess," Mal replied, forcing himself to take a deep breath, in an effort to calm down. "What you've told me is actually more helpful than what I heard first off." For Mal, that was about as close as he'd get to saying thank you.

"I wasn't questionin' the effectiveness of things here, just wonderin' what steps were in place for takin' action against those bug things. Seems there's a good arrangement, then." Mal felt slightly abashed; he hadn't meant to blast his bad mood off on Jo. Last thing he needed was making enemies, especially since he didn't really know anyone on board the ship.

[identity profile] deputyjo.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
"Seriously?" Jo eyed him, wondering how anything she'd just said was helpful. Heck, she'd even managed to confuse herself. But if he got it? Awesome.

"Uh, well I think the command staff people are working on a plan. Though I'm not sure 'cause I'm not a part of the command staff."

Which was probably a good thing as her solution for most things would to be shooting them.

"But hopefully they'll figure things out and let the rest of us know. I'm pretty sure they'll come up with something though. They have a telepath, and a guy who flies who was a congressman or something. And of course Captain Picard and Captain Kirk."

[identity profile] am-alwaysfree.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, seriously." Mal looked surprised at her reaction. "Best answer I've gotten out of anyone, really."

"Plans are good, if they're solid and straightforward enough," Mal agreed. "But sometimes, gettin' a weapon and shootin' things works just as well," he added. "At least, that's worked for me."

"Sounds like there's a lot of brains on board this ship." Mal laughed slightly. "Shouldn't be long before some sort of plan's been made up, then."

[identity profile] deputyjo.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Mal gets a full out grin from Jo now, and he's unknowingly made a new best friend.

"Oh yeah, I completely agree. Sometimes you need to shoot first and ask questions later." She smirks a little, and leans back looking him over for a moment. "You get to bring any of your weapons with you?" Yes, Jo is a big fan of guns and shiny weapons.

"Hopefully they do," Jo sighed. "But anyway. Want a few tips for living on this ship?"

[identity profile] am-alwaysfree.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Mal returns the smile, a wider one than the ones he'd given her before, because he already considers her a friend.

"Not many people realize that sometimes that's what you have to do in a tight situation," Mal said, also smirking. But then the smirk disappeared, and he shook his head. "Arrived here without a one. That normal around here?"

"Oh, and whatever tips you have, they'd be appreciated."

[identity profile] deputyjo.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
"What? No weapons? Bummer." She unholstered her baretta and showed it to him. "I came with this and few other of my guns. Seriously? Nothing for you in Weapons and Possesions? Or have you found your way there yet?"

Man, Jo felt for the guy. Seriously if she'd been put on this ship without her guns, she would have been pissed off.

"OK, tip one, don't eat the ship gloop unless you take it into the Sensoriums. At least there it tastes like real stuff." she says ticking off a finger. "Two, don't start any fights unless you're in the mood to be bitch slapped by Stacy - NOT fun." she ticked off another finger. "And uh, be careful what you think. There are telepaths on board."

[identity profile] am-alwaysfree.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, not an ideal situation. I don't much like not bein' armed, you know?" He inspected her baretta closely. "Looks like a good weapon. And I didn't know there was one of those here; where is it?"

He smiled a bit at her comment about the food. "Doesn't sound too appetizin', but that might just be me." Then, he nodded at her comment about not fighting, but didn't say anything until she mentioned telepaths. "Telepaths? Real, genuine telepaths?" He looked at her a little skeptically as he replied.

[identity profile] deputyjo.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
"I can show you. I mean I could try and give you directions, but... This ship is confusing." she offered. Mal needed a gun, she'd help him find his way to the W&P locker.

"Yeah.. Telepaths, you know the kind that can read your thoughts and stuff?" She smiled thinking of all the people on board who had some sort of power. She turned her head slightly and pointed at Juno. "He's one.... And she's one," Jo said pointing at Jean.

[identity profile] am-alwaysfree.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, thanks, I really do appreciate it." And he did, very much. He figured he could find the place eventually, but he wasn't about to turn down Jo's offer, especially since she could probably find the locker faster than he could on his own.

"Yeah, I know what telepaths are... I'm just surprised to hear they're on this ship. But then again, what with all the different people on board, maybe that's not so surprisin' after all." That being said, he turned to look at the two people Jo indicated. He didn't expect there to be a giant flashing sign pointing them out as telepaths, because that would've been ridiculous, but he still couldn't help but be surprised at how normal they appeared. "Suppose they don't intentionally go around listenin' in on people's thoughts, do they?"

[identity profile] ranger-jo.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
"It's not a problem," Jo said with a dismissive wave of her hand. She didn't mind, one he needed a gun, and two she wanted to make sure no one was trying to steal stuff.

"Oh, well. I don't know." Jo said truthfully as she looked back and forth between the two. "I don't like... Really talk to either of them? I don't see why they would though." She shrugged, like she kenw anything about telepaths and how they used their powers. Heck if she was a telepath though? She'd be afraid to be listening in to too many of the crew's thoughts.

[identity profile] am-alwaysfree.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, if you're sure about that." She didn't seem to mind, so Mal didn't force the issue anymore.

"Yeah, I guess there wouldn't be any reason to. Just wonderin', 'cause I haven't met many telepaths before. Well, there was one, but I ain't too sure how strong her abilities were." Mal didn't say anything more about that, because he didn't want to be responsible in case unforeseen consequences arose from talking too much. He hadn't spoken about it to anyone, but part of him still suspected there was some Alliance involvement; whether that was irrational of him or not, he wasn't sure. Maybe he'd just spent too long running away from the long arm of the government.

As it was, unless Jo asked him directly, he wasn't about to volunteer more information on that subject.

[identity profile] deputyjo.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
"Well you'll meet more than just telepaths here," Jo informed him. "Like there's all sorts of people with powers on this ship. There's some speedy guy, and well... You'll see. It's all kinda mind boggling."

"So you knew a telepath? She read your mind all the time or something and that's why you wanted to know if ours did too?"

[identity profile] am-alwaysfree.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, I'm beginnin' to see that," Mal replied. "Just met a kid who said he's the fastest kid alive.. Maybe the same one you're talkin' about. Might be mind-boggling, but I figure I'll get used to it in time."

"I knew one. Like I said, I ain't too sure how strong she was with that stuff, but on occasion she showed signs of bein' able to sense things. It wasn't exactly readin' minds, but sensin' things." Mal paused to think for a few seconds. "Well, no, it wasn't so much that, as it was that I don't like the idea of people knowing everything I'm thinkin'."

[identity profile] deputyjo.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
"Could've been," Jo grinned and shrugged her shoulders. She'd lost track over who was who and who did what. It sucked, but she did pretty know who were the trouble makers on board.

"Well hopefully our telepaths have a little bit of control." Jo's nose wrinkled because she too didn't like the idea of someone always knowing what she thought. She'd probably get in a lot of trouble if someone bothered to keep track of her every thought.

"Well just let me know when you want to go to the weapons and possession lockers, OK?"

[identity profile] am-alwaysfree.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm guessin' they do. The telepath I knew was still young, with a lot of growin' left to do." Mal left that conversation thread alone, more interested now in getting himself armed.

"Guess there's no point in puttin' it off. I've got the time to go there now if you do."

[identity profile] deputyjo.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 03:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"Sure I got some time," Jo answered and motioned for him to follow her out of the Obs deck.

"So you're probably going to see some... interesting stuff in the weapons and possessions locker. But be sure to only take what's yours because stuff in there might belong to someone who might pop soon, and well... Don't need to be getting in a fight over possessions, you know?"

[identity profile] am-alwaysfree.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Mal couldn't help the urge to roll his eyes. He didn't mean to be disrespectful or anything like that, but the idea of taking something that might belong to someone else never occurred to him. "Don't see a point in taking someone else's things. I only need the stuff that belongs to me, however temptin' some of the stuff there might be."

That being said, he followed Jo out of the Obs deck, noting the surroundings and general layout as he did so.
