Newbie Meet n' Greet

For the newbies, there are people waiting for them in the Obs Deck. A whole gaggle of people. Behind them is the nasty statue, and the beautiful sight through the windows of the stars streaming past and the swirling vortex of collars that was interdimensional travel.

There are more questions than answers, but the crew is willing to help, especially the Command Staff and greeters.

Well, Wyn notices her, mostly because they're the same height. That never happens to her. "Hi, cool bracelet!" Wyn chirps, giving the red-haired woman a cheerful wave. "I'm Wyn, I'm assuming you're new, and I'm kind of an official question-answerer for right now. Got any questions about what's going on here?" It would be kind of funny if she weren't actually new, but Wyn distinctly didn't remember meeting any redheads that were her height.

"I have several, thank you." Since there isn't a handshake involved, Diana curtsies at Wyn in greeting. "I was informed that I am heading a team, however I am rather unclear on the purpose of said team and how I should best go about locating the members of said team so that we may be able to recognize one another."

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-07-03 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
"Ooh, you're leading a team? The teams are... um, okay, so Stacy can send groups of us on missions to different planets to do something, we're never quite sure what. We've been split into teams so that it's just easier for people to get organized on those missions." Wyn says, giving the curtsy a Look. She doesn't do well with the idea of nobility.

"I wouldn't try to find people in here, it's a madhouse. The way I'd do it is to wait until you get an omnicom, they're kind of like little personal computers, send out a message on there, and then try to arrange a meeting from there." she continues thoughtfully. "You could try and hunt people down after this meeting, but that sounds like a lot of work if you don't already know who's on your team."

Looks are met with Blank Looks, carefully crafted not to indicate any discomfort or annoyance at Wyn's reaction to her greeting. A blank look in response is probably enough of an indicator that Diana does not think now is the time to be picky with statuses.

If it was, she wouldn't bother speaking to anyone. But she needs answers and this ship, apparently, needs all of them.

"So the groups are simply sent to...a planet," which is about the point Diana realizes this is not a ship on water and her eyes shift from green to a very sharp blue. "Without any warning or indication of what their final purpose is? So are they usually sent as envoys or exploration teams?"

Omnicom is not a term Diana has ever heard before, but she can figure out that it is some sort of communication device. One hopes she doesn't try to take it apart. "No, none of the names are familiar to me. I see, thank you for the assistance. What is your position here, when you are not answering questions for recent arrivals, Miss Wyn?"

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-07-03 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
"There's an objective, but what Stacy says is going to happen and what actually happens are usually two different things. The last mission was a retrieval-type thing, but there's bound to be more variety." Wyn says, in her infinite knowledge of exactly one mission, and that only secondhand.

"Oh, it's not a problem. I'm on the Engineering staff and Team November, which is honestly a bit of a stupid name for a team." Wyn says, waving a hand in irritation. "And it's just Wyn, really, we've got to be about the same age."

[identity profile] outofsequences.livejournal.com 2009-07-03 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
"That is interesting." In quiet possibly the worst way. Groups of people who have never met one another prior to this...event, being thrust upon new places and each other with little to no understanding of what they're doing or why sounds like a recipe for disaster.

"What does the engineering staff on this vessel do?" More slightly blank expression as Wyn's annoyance. "It has little to do with age, however, if you insist. How old are you, then?"

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-07-03 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"You could call it that. Most people just curse the heavens and then try to get to know their teammates before they get sent somewhere insane." Wyn says with a cheerful shrug. "It's definitely the smartest way to go about it."

She wasn't annoyed with the 'Miss Wyn' thing, she was annoyed with what she sees as a stupid name for her team full of werewolves. "... um, 20. But still, seriously, if we're all going to be trapped on a living spaceship with each other for God-only-knows-how-long there's no need to be so formal." she continues apologetically.

[identity profile] outofsequences.livejournal.com 2009-07-03 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"Cursing heavens does little good unless the heavens bother to curse back." Diana opens her hands in a gesture that on most people would be a shrug. "I would rather know my surroundings and the others responsible for themselves and keeping all of us hale and whole than not."

Diana looks at Wyn for a moment, a long moment, before finally nodding. "I see. My name is Diana." Formalities are the sum and substance of how her mind works, but really? Today is not the day for that argument. Besides, she can always call her Miss Wyn in her own head.

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-07-03 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh, I don't know. Helps work off some tension, yelling at the ceiling, and as long as you do get to know the rest of your team there shouldn't be an issue." Wyn says brightly.

"Nice to meet you, Diana! Where and when are you from, if you don't mind me asking?" This isn't for anything official, it's just for personal reference, but Wyn likes to know. Maybe eventually she'll run into someone from her universe, but she doubts it. Most people don't believe in magic here.

[identity profile] outofsequences.livejournal.com 2009-07-03 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Shouting at ceilings still sounds like a waste of time and breath to Diana but she isn't the shouting type to begin with. "I suspect you are right."

Diana smiles a bit. "Russia. When is a bit more difficult, as there are three calendar systems in use. However, by the Gregorian Calendar the year was 1865. 2409 by the Nirvana Statute. And yourself?"

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-07-03 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm from the Gaeltacht Quarter of London in 2009, but I'm at university in Scotland at the moment." Wyn says thoughtfully. She's from someone's future, which is very exciting. She's gotten used to being in most people's past.

[identity profile] outofsequences.livejournal.com 2009-07-03 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"I have never been to London or Scotland." Diana considers and the bracelet shifts further up her arm. "What is you home like? Sociologically, politically I mean."

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-07-03 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
"Er, well, we've got a constitutional monarchy. We've got a King, but his power's limited by an assembly which consists of both elected officials in the House of Commons and peers in the House of Lords. I'm really not a political science student, so these might not be the best answers." Wyn says, tilting her head as she thinks of a way to describe everything.

"And if you want to get technical, the Gaeltacht Quarter is sort of like a chunk of Ireland planted smack in the middle of Old London, so it's not exactly London. The British Empire is still around, so the King controls England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, India and Pakistan, and bits of Africa. Most people who aren't English are very unhappy with that situation."

[identity profile] outofsequences.livejournal.com 2009-07-03 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"It is more than sufficient, either way." Diana smiles. That is more or less what she had wanted for her own people. "It is a balance, better than a standalone monarchy, though I am surprised there are still active colonies at that point." The people, she thinks, would have had revolt upon revolt by that point. "What are you studying at university?"

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-07-03 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"So are we, and it's not for lack of trying that Ireland's still in the Empire." Ireland is still occupied territory after the last attempt at independence. Eventually, Wyn believes, the Crown is just going to say 'oh %$&# it' and let Ireland be independent, but for now they are unhappily members of the British Empire.

"Oh, mechanical engineering." Wyn says airily. "It's basically the mad-scientist major at university, but that just means I fit right in."

[identity profile] outofsequences.livejournal.com 2009-07-03 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"What is it that you plan on building?" England's politics were something she had never gotten directly involved in; she had her own country to run and save.

"So what do you build?" Mad scientists are common in Diana's opinion. And probably useful for this sort of endeavor.

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-07-04 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, robots, mostly." Wyn says with a shrug. "Robots and magitech. You know, it's really rather nice having someone who doesn't automatically assume that I'm lying about being a mad scientist. I keep telling people that it really isn't the sort of thing you pretend to be for fun just based on our track record for things like 'going insane and trying to take over the world', but no one listens."

[identity profile] outofsequences.livejournal.com 2009-07-04 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
"I do not see any reason why someone would claim to be insane if they are not. Besides which, those who seek to push the incorporation of magick and technology tend to be an interesting sort of thinker."

Which brings Diana to another point, fascinatingly enough. "Is magick common here? In a room full of people I have seen very little of it."

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-07-04 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
"Exactly. People just assume I'm making things up, but really, no one wants to be a mad scientist. It just kind of happens." Was that a compliment? If it was, Wyn either didn't hear it or is completely ignoring it and hoping it will go away.

"I haven't seen much onboard, especially not since I'm in Engineering, although I keep hoping there's someone I can work with." Wyn says thoughtfully, glancing around the room.

[ooc: deleted and reposted for general fail. sorry!]

[identity profile] outofsequences.livejournal.com 2009-07-05 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Compliment or no, Diana is not going to repeat it. "That it does. There are genetics and environment at play but from what I understand it is rarely simply choice."

Diana tilted her head, a bit, and the bracelet shifted again. Up her arm and around her throat, settling as a wide necklace. "What sort of work?"

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-07-05 03:21 pm (UTC)(link)
And Wyn's strategy of ignoring something until it goes away works yet again!

"I haven't-- ooh, how'd it do that?" Wyn says, distracted by the shiny the movement of Diana's necklace-bracelet-jewelry-thing.

[identity profile] outofsequences.livejournal.com 2009-07-05 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, hey, if it works!

It takes Diana a moment to realize what Wyn is asking about, which is likely a very good indicator of how used to it she (and other people from her world) are to the apparent oddity.

"It is the Crown. On a Metalwerker or those who deal in Time, it moves of it's own design and will."

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-07-06 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"So, which one are you?" Wyn asks forthrightly, watching the Crown in fascination. (She's never quite mastered the art of subtlety.) "... sorry, that was probably rude."

[identity profile] outofsequences.livejournal.com 2009-07-06 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Still, Diana smiles. Both subtlety and forthrightness have their place and there is something to be said for those who speak their minds as they go.

"Both. The first in a millennium and the last in a line."

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-07-06 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh. So is it ensorcelled to react to the metalworking and temporal manipulation?" Wyn asks, inspecting the formerly-moving piece of jewelry from a safe-ish distance. "I can't imagine that it'd be entirely nonmagical in nature, just because it only reacts to certain people, but-- I'm sorry, you probably don't want to talk about your jewelry."
