Newbie Meet n' Greet

For the newbies, there are people waiting for them in the Obs Deck. A whole gaggle of people. Behind them is the nasty statue, and the beautiful sight through the windows of the stars streaming past and the swirling vortex of collars that was interdimensional travel.

There are more questions than answers, but the crew is willing to help, especially the Command Staff and greeters.

Yoshimi nods slowly, sinking further into apathy the longer Wyn continues to talk, as the undesirable qualities of the situation continue to grow with each word uttered from her mouth. She sighs, running a hand through her hair unconsciously as she looks around once again. "So, basically, try as hard as possible not to come into contact with anything. I'll try as hard as I possibly can, trust me."

At the compliment, she smiles, tugging on a strand of the irritating pink stuff. "Really? I kind of want to cut it off now, what with the whole lack of rubber bands." She tucks it behind her ear, showing off the industrial piercing that she had not yet noticed was gone. "I'm from Tokyo. Bunkyo district." She adds the last bit after a fraction of a second, figuring that it couldn't hurt to be specific. Either Wyn would know what she was talking about or she would go on with life. Either way, it hurt no one, especially since they were... isolated... in the middle of space. "The year was 2082. How about you?" Something occurs to her. "Are there people here from different planets? Er... not Earth?"

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-07-03 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm from the Gaeltacht Quarter of London, 2009, if that means anything to you. It might not, parallel universes and all. Also, uh, there might be people who are fictional to you here. Parallel universes again, try not to be all 'oh my god, you're fictional, I know everything about you, oh my god!'" Wyn says, doing a very good imitation of a squee-ing fangirl. "They, uh... that is not looked upon kindly."

"Anyway, yeah, there're people here from other Earths, other planets, I'm trying to find-- ooh, there we go! See the green guy getting tackled by a naga? He's one of the Brainiac Fives. That one's all squishy, the other one's a robot. It gets kind of confusing, except not really because it's not hard to tell them apart."

[identity profile] slainrobots.livejournal.com 2009-07-03 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
She nods simply for the sake of nodding. "The only part I understood was the London and the year. I envy you living in 2009. Ugh." A head shake, a grimace. "By fictional, you mean, like... book characters and people from movies? Hmm..." She holds herself back from carefully scanning the crowd, figuring that, even if she did, she wouldn't recognize any people that she already 'knows'.

Her eyes fix on the green guy and she frowns faintly. "Why is there a large snake lady tackling him? Wouldn't... uh... does Stacy allow fighting? Because it seems like it'd be pretty easy for her to stop them..." Yoshimi is still watching the peculiar tackle-fight when something registers in her head, and she freezes. "Robot?" Her eyes return to Wyn, and they are rather hard. "The other one's a robot?" Blink, blink, groan. "Great, just my luck to end up abducted by a ship that's also housing a robot and be held against my will. Just spiffy. Please don't tell me there are more of them..."

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-07-03 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"... yeah, that'd be what I meant by 'fictional'. Also TV shows, but if you're from Japan you might not recognize anyone. Different TV and everything."

"I dunno. The lack of face-eating from the naga makes me think they're friends. Also the fact that that Brainiac is hugging her, which, um... if you've met him, he's not exactly a hugging type of person. Coluan. Whatever. He also hasn't learned to share." And that's Wyn getting slightly less happy. Whatever he wouldn't share with her, it really managed to make her angry. "And yeah, Stacy isn't a big fan of the fighting. If she catches you fighting, you get a warning, and then Violations with a capital-V. 15 Violations and you get Punished, capital-P. Stacy's pretty good at pronouncing capital letters for you." she continues, recovering from her momentary lapse into irritation.

"He doesn't like being called a robot, but-- what's wrong with robots?" And Wyn is sensing some awkwardness in this new friendship acquaintanceship.

[identity profile] slainrobots.livejournal.com 2009-07-03 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yoshimi is a little overwhelmed by the sheer volume of words erupting from Wyn's mouth. All she does for a long moment is blink at her, thinking vaguely that it's very nice to be talking to someone the same height as her. Clearing her throat, she averts her eyes, feeling awkward and highly out of place. It probably has to do with her lack of familiarity with social situations and talkative people. "I see. Well, uhm... maybe he missed that class in kindergarten. Or something." She clears her throat again, shifting from foot to foot.

"He has a preference for what he's called? Jeez..." She grumbles incoherently for a moment before sighing and folding her arms across her chest. "Lots of stuff is wrong with robots. That's why I make a living by destroying them. I guess it doesn't really apply here, though. The robots in my world are being infected with a rampancy virus designed by an underground Luddite organization, since most menial labor is being performed by AI's these days. The organization doesn't take kindly to the way we're allowing artificial intelligence to take over our society, even if we are only letting them do things we consider to be lesser jobs. The education system has even been taken into robotic hands, which I have to admit is incredibly irritating. Needless to say, the fact that robots are so rampant in the world these days is causing some serious problems. They're all going insane and trying to destroy stuff and eat people." The explanation is rather lacking in emotion, which is honestly not anything new for Yoshimi. The flat tone of her voice is actually indicative of the fact that she's more comfortable with the situation when discussing things that she actually understands. She blinks. "Don't ask me how robots manage to eat people, though; I'm not sure myself."

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-07-03 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Lots of people have the same 'oh-god-this-girl-talks-too-much' reaction to Wyn. She's used to it by now. "That's what I said!" Wyn says triumphantly. "Anyway, I don't know, I've only really talked to B5, the robot one, and he was all right." she continues, shrugging lightly.

"... uh. I'm a mad scientist. I make robots." Wyn says in response to the rather dispassionate rant, finally identifying the source of the awkwardness. "Mine don't eat people, though-- and I was actually going to ask how that worked. Why do they need to eat people, anyway? I mean, unless they run on carbon or something, but that's horribly inefficient." She sounds oddly knowledgeable about this supposed inefficiency.

[identity profile] slainrobots.livejournal.com 2009-07-04 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
"Ah.. well... I'll keep that in mind," she says, trying to smile and failing magnificently.

By the way her eyes abruptly focus - possibly for the first time - on Wyn, it is easy to tell that her interest switch has been flipped. "Really? I've always kind of wondered how they do that. Not that I'm particularly fond of them, but they're really complicated. I know how to take them apart, not put them back together, you know?" As she talks, she reassesses the 'mad scientist' before her. "All I can figure is that they like the squishy-crunchy feeling of chewing up people. There really aren't any nutritional benefits, as they don't really have a way of processing nutrients. I've only seen people being eaten a few times; the operational lights get really bright and twinkly. Maybe it makes them happy or something? Who knows."

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-07-04 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Wyn... completely ignores the smile-fail in favor of talking shop. "Yeah, taking apart is the easy bit." she says thoughtfully. "And unless they're sentient, they don't like or dislike anything, to be honest. I know, I'm horrible about remembering that, I definitely talk to whatever I'm building, but there's really no reason for them to eat people. I'd just chalk it up to a ghost in the machine and have done with it."

[identity profile] slainrobots.livejournal.com 2009-07-04 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Yoshimi's logical self has always found it a bit odd that she gets so much enjoyment out of destroying the things that she is most compelled by. She comforts herself by pointing out that the world is a sick place and tries really hard to ignore the thought that maybe this is the reason for the constant failures of her attempts at dating. The little voice in the back of her head that society calls her conscience and she calls annoying brings this train of thought into the front of her mind as she frowns in thought. An almost undetectable grimace is covered by her reply. "I guess it could be labeled a trait of the rampancy virus since it's such a consistency among the deranged ones. Like I said, I've only seen a few people get nommed, but all of the reports of new breakouts supply lists of the devoured. It's kind of ridiculous when you think about it."

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-07-04 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Wyn has managed to drive away boys by being too cheerful-- and then promptly drawing up plans for horrible, world-ending superweapons, which might have a bit more to do with the driving away of boyfriends. "... crazy thing to put into a virus, eating people." Wyn says with a frown. "Anyway, Occam's razor says that's probably the answer. If I got one of the processor units from one of the infected, I could tell you for certain, but that's not likely to happen so we're just going to go with logic for the moment."

[identity profile] slainrobots.livejournal.com 2009-07-04 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Perhaps Wyn and Yoshimi could empathize with one another about their traumatic dating experiences over tea. Except that Yoshimi considers tea to be silly. "Yeah, well, the Luddite organization is pretty serious about their anti-technology stuff. Hence the label 'Luddite'. They all just wish they were born in 1980. Truthfully, I agree with them, but that's beside the point." She shakes her head, cutting her babbling off forcefully. "If I could hand you a processor unit, I would. Unfortunately, they're all back in 2083, so... that's not really going to work. Logic will have to do."

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-07-04 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
"No one liked the eighties. The economy was horrible, Thatcher was PM, and mesh shirts were in fashion." Wyn says, shuddering slightly. "I don't mind the rest of the fashion, provided I can pick and choose from somewhere safely in the future, but my hair doesn't perm well and I don't really feel like killing the ozone layer with hairspray. The music was mostly crap, and the revolution failed as well." And now that she's been derailed on her rant about the 1980s...

[identity profile] slainrobots.livejournal.com 2009-07-05 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yoshimi arches an eyebrow. "My point was the lack of dependence on technology. People actually did things instead of having robots to do them for them, and they still spoke face to face or over the phone. Yeah, the fashion wasn't great, the music was questionable and all that, but the technology was perfect."

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-07-05 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
"... oh. Well, that makes a bit more sense, but still, no one in their right mind wants the eighties back." Wyn says a bit sheepishly.

[identity profile] slainrobots.livejournal.com 2009-07-05 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
If Yoshimi had spunk, she would have grinned and said something along the lines of 'Well, who said that I'm in my right mind?' However, Yoshimi does not have spunk, or at least not that kind, so she merely shrugs. "Hey, they were better than the 2000's."

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-07-06 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"... yeah, the late naughts kind of suck." Wyn says, nodding in agreement. "Except we have the Nexus, which to be fair mostly contains porn and illegal filesharing, but lets people communicate over long distances not-face-to-face."

[identity profile] slainrobots.livejournal.com 2009-07-06 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
"What's the Nexus?" she wonders aloud, having not heard of it before. She's not particularly compelled by the porn, but the illegal filesharing sounds right up her alley, as she is quite adept at flouting the system and downloading music. If she had ever seen a CD, she would have missed them greatly, but she barely knows what they are, so she sticks to music files.

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-07-07 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
"Um... non-techie answer? Worldwide network of computers which can display hypertext documents and files" Wyn says after a moment, trying to come up with a not-jargon-filled explanation. "That's about as basic as it gets without actually getting into ones and zeroes."

[identity profile] slainrobots.livejournal.com 2009-07-07 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
She blinks. "You still use binary?" is all she can say on the matter, catching the 'ones and zeroes' comment and storing the rest of Wyn's words for later processing. "Binary became obsolete in 2014! Man. I do not envy you your technology. Not that I ever envy anyone their technology... just... binary..." And then she sobers up and gets over it. "Anyway, that just sounds like the Internet. You know, where I come from, we each have the Internet in our heads. Connective chips are inserted into our brains at birth."

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-07-08 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Wyn blinks, torn between saying 'you have viable affordable quantum computing take me to your future nao' and 'hey, leave my binary system alone!' Scientific curiosity wins out. "Hey, so, um... that means your future's got quantum computing, right?" she asks, trying to sound nonchalant (and failing miserably).

"... I dunno, maybe that's what you call it. Alternate universes, et cetera. Also, the chip-in-the-head thing is kind of cool if you like bio-mods, which I do not. Too squishy." Many, many things are 'too squishy' for mechanical-engineer-mad-scientists. "And besides, what happens when you want to turn the Nexus off?"

[identity profile] slainrobots.livejournal.com 2009-07-08 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Though it is an odd expression for her, Yoshimi finds herself grinning smugly. "Yeah. It makes the world about eighteen times easier, and you get to brag about it to all of your alternate-dimension friends. Binary is so last century." Fortunately, her last statement is said in a tone intended to mock the stereotypical teenage girl, only a stereotypical teenage girl would probably say something more along the lines of 'That skirt is so last week.'

She shrugs. "You kind of don't; it becomes natural to ignore it, and you get over the creepy possibility of being hacked at any second. The government uses the connection to spy on people that need spying upon. Like me."

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-07-08 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, all my alternate-dimension friends are from worlds where they still use Babbage's Difference Engine system, so I get to brag to them about our fancy binary." Wyn says, also adopting the tone of the cooler-snobbier-and-bitchier-than-thou stereotypical teenage girl. Wyn would give her right arm for a look at one of those quantum computers-- well, someone's right arm, anyway. Maybe not hers, even if she is left-handed.

"... oh. Well, that sounds like the government."

[identity profile] slainrobots.livejournal.com 2009-07-08 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well... I don't have any friends!" Apparently, Yoshimi feels that she has won the contest, despite the fact that her lack of friends is highly, highly depressing. It wasn't her fault, though; she just doesn't like people, and people don't like her. Her tendency to glare at them is a bit off-putting.

She grimaces. "Our government is pretty typical. Sleazy, loop-hole-finding, privacy-invading megalomaniacs in three-piece suits. So it goes."

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-07-08 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
"You win!" Wyn says cheerfully, throwing her hands up in almost-entirely-sarcastic surrender. Wyn will just ignore you and keep talking if you try to glare at her, Yoshimi, so rejoice in the fact that you do so have a friend!

"Add in some conquering of neighboring countries and then not letting them go ever and you've basically got our government. The king has a very shiny crown for state occasions, though, which makes up for more than you'd think." she continues, smile turning slightly brittle and remarkably unamused. Wyn has... issues with her government.

[identity profile] slainrobots.livejournal.com 2009-07-08 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
"Glee. I now have something to tell my non-existent friends when I get back." Yoshimi would be happy if she actually understood the concept of friendship. The only organic being she has ever 'befriended' is her cat, and no one is really sure whether or not that counts.

"... That sounds a lot like the United Kingdom government in my dimension. The king still flaunts his crown despite the fact that he's basically become an artifact from time gone by."
