Meat n' Greet

The rest of the crew assembled on the Observation Deck to meet the latest editions to their numbers. After the revelation that their worlds are gone, many of them are even more eager to see people they knew from home.

Several people are set up near the doors to provide the new people with omnicoms and comm rings. New crew-mates might see a tall man in green armor and snake girl among their number. There are also several authoritative-looking figures ready to introduce themselves.

There's a lot to tell the new people. It's going to be a lot to take in.

[ooc: Only new characters and Command Staff can start new threads for introductions, to limit the number of threads. Everyone else, just tag in and have your guys greet the newbies.]

She nodded. "Yes, you're right about that. I'll do my best to adjust to things as they come, and I'm just glad I was brought back. Now, you gave me this really spectacular shield, and I love it! Is there anything I can do for you?"

[[OOC: Oh, I know all about Riza, its due to you playing Daja that I sought out reading the completely series. I meant for Daja on the ship.]]

Daja laughed. "Kaya, you've only just woken up! I don't think now is the time to be thinking about whether you need to do me any favours - and besides, you owe me no debt. Your shield was bought and paid for, and our books are even."

[[ooc: Aaah, gotcha. (And aww, thank you! I'm glad she inspired you to read the rest of the books.) But in terms of ships, I tend to not play specifically with the aim of finding ships when I rp, unless I think it'd be really interesting for the character's development. If someone comes along and has chemistry, maybe, but atm getting her a ship isn't really a focus for me.]]

"Exactly. I did just wake up," she said, "and its why I want to make sure that I'm grateful for it. But I mean, is there anything in general that you might need help with? I'm not asking as a form of payment between two merchants. I mean as friends."

[[Ahh, I see. Well, that's fine too! Besides, she's obviously pretty busy to begin with.]]

"I do appreciate it," Daja said warmly. "But I'm fine - I don't need for anything right now." She smiled, mischievous. "Besides, I have an apprentice now. I need to save up my odd jobs for him."

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2011-04-06 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, is that right?" Some thing had certainly changed. "Who's this apprentice?"
fireforger: (Cheerful)

[personal profile] fireforger 2011-04-06 01:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yes, his name is Hiccup," Daja explained. "He still has much to learn, but he shows great promise. And sometimes, the insights he has astound me. I am confident that he will make a fine Master Blacksmith, one day."

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2011-04-06 01:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Kaya laughed. "You know, I really think I'd like to meet Hiccup. We have once before, but he wasn't, well, conscious for that, and I was in medical. I've already met Ruffnut, someone from his world, and I'm pretty sure I talked to his dad before he was podded. That guy...I feel like I'm bound to see him doing something on this ship again."
fireforger: (Happy 1)

[personal profile] fireforger 2011-04-06 01:47 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm sure you will," Daja said. "He's certainly very active around the ship." They might have gotten off to a slightly bad start, but after taking him on as an apprentice Daja has seen firsthand that Hiccup was a very hard worker. She knew that she had made the right choice.

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2011-04-06 01:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Kaya nodded. "Yes, so I've heard. He was also pretty outspoken about the psychiatric evaluations on the ship: I was impressed by his points. From what I know of Hiccup, he is a remarkable boy. I have no doubt he would be an asset as your apprentice."
fireforger: (Watching)

[personal profile] fireforger 2011-04-06 02:05 pm (UTC)(link)
"He was?" Daja said, blinking. She hadn't followed the debate herself; but she had approved of the decision. Taking care of one's mental health was, after all, just as important as taking care of that. What had happened to Briar had certainly taught her that.

But she had a feeling that Hiccup might not see it that way. "What points did he raise?"

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2011-04-06 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
"It happened a little while ago. While most of the crew was fine with physical evaluations, the idea of a mandatory psychiatric evaluation seemed too intrusive. Hiccup outright declared he wouldn't do it, being that he was from a different culture with different priorities, and the idea of a psychiatrist evaluating if eh was mental fit made no sense to him. Personally, I think he has a point, and that we have some members of the crew a little daring and energetic, but are overall good people. An evaluation of that sort would likely not work anyway, not without magic."
fireforger: (Quiet)

[personal profile] fireforger 2011-04-07 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Daja considered this for a moment. "I can understand reluctance," Daja said slowly. "But taking care of one's mental self is important. And sometimes people are unable to acknowledge their own that they need help. My brother...my brother got caught up in a warzone. And afterwards he suffered from nightmares, and could not sleep alone. But he didn't want to admit to us what had happened. I think he felt like if he admitted he needed help, and went to see a mind healer, that it was like saying that he was weak. And if the Doctor has no magic, if there is one thing I have learned since I woke up here, it is that even without magic amazing things can be achieved. Perhaps the evaluations would not be successful, but that does not mean that they are not worth trying."

"I'm not saying people who need it shouldn't go, or that its necessary. But I do know that some people are pretty certain that they have certain tendencies that might not be considered normal to others on the ship. Let's say, for instance, I had a friend who thought that killing off a threat to the ship, even if they were under the guise of being harmless, was the best way to solve a problem. That person might be labeled as too violent to be participating on missions."
