Meat n' Greet

The rest of the crew assembled on the Observation Deck to meet the latest editions to their numbers. After the revelation that their worlds are gone, many of them are even more eager to see people they knew from home.

Several people are set up near the doors to provide the new people with omnicoms and comm rings. New crew-mates might see a tall man in green armor and snake girl among their number. There are also several authoritative-looking figures ready to introduce themselves.

There's a lot to tell the new people. It's going to be a lot to take in.

[ooc: Only new characters and Command Staff can start new threads for introductions, to limit the number of threads. Everyone else, just tag in and have your guys greet the newbies.]

Not cold or unfeeling, but perfectly capable of killing-machineitude!

"I see... in that case, I should let you know that while the humans I'm familiar with can be petty or hostile, they're far from what you'd call intergalactic imperialists. And those I've met on this ship have been nothing but helpful. At least, to the best of their abilities."

He bowed slightly in response to her introduction; it was only polite. "Well met, then, Farseer Ildraniath."

[identity profile] futureisclear.livejournal.com 2011-04-01 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
"True, but you look very much like them. Nor are you, strictly speaking, an alien to them. I will have to see," she replied. Her runestones still flotated around her, but they didn't seem to distract her at all. She lowered her head in a response to his bow.

"Well met. Tell me - I saw millions more of those pods- Are they all full of those like us? Other Eldar, perhaps?"

Well, that was really the best he could hope for, for now.

"Yes; they're full of people from destroyed worlds. Some of them may contain others of your kind, but..." he hesitated for a brief instant. "I wouldn't recommend trying to extract them. Supposedly, the stasis they're in is a delicate one. I've been told forcibly removing someone from one of the pods could easily kill them. I've never tested the theory myself, though."

"So, we are the whim of this ship? How... upsetting," she murmured, "What is our purpose here? I presume we're meant to fight these supposed Ohm?"

"Yes, we are." If this was delivered a little more grimly than Zouichi had intended, it was only because he'd found out exactly how much the ship had over them.

"We're supposed to fight the Ohm, and perform any tasks the ship deems would help us in that goal. Sometimes, that means negotiating with an alien civilization for an artifact, or useful information. Unfortunately, it looks like the ship is in a certain degree of disrepair; a few days ago, for instance, it accidentally released an enormously powerful criminal that tried to kill off the crew. And I am not entirely convinced that our best interests lie closest to its heart."

[identity profile] futureisclear.livejournal.com 2011-04-01 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"Remind me why we haven't repaired it or brought it to heel, then. It is some sort of artificially constructed intelligence, is it not? Can't we simply override it? Provide ourselves some measure of control over our own fate?"

Which was a bit ironic, considering her job as a seer.

[identity profile] zouichi.livejournal.com 2011-04-01 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"I believe it's controlled by a series of artificial intelligences, actually, though the one that spoke to you is apparently the main one. The technology is not necessarily something the crew is familiar with, although they have made some strides towards getting things in order.

"Apparently, it also regards attempts to make major changes to its programming as a threat... and the ship deals with threats accordingly. I would recommend looking up footage of the last Punishment, by the way."

[identity profile] futureisclear.livejournal.com 2011-04-01 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
"Perhaps they have simply not applied the correct pressure..." She mused, half to herself, "I wonder if... Ah, no. I am no bonesinger."

Once, in another lifetime, perhaps.

"I will do that; thank you. I would rather not run afoul of this... creature... before I fully understand this place."

[identity profile] zouichi.livejournal.com 2011-04-01 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Zouichi regarded those absentminded words with some curiosity. Bonesinger?

He looked back at those hovering runes. "So, your people are called the Eldar? I assume those runestones are held aloft by magic."

[identity profile] futureisclear.livejournal.com 2011-04-01 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
She actually laughed at that - not cruelly, but she was amused. "Some might call it magic. It is a manipulation of the warp, of reality. My mind is attuned to it."
ext_988045: (Zouichi: ...?)

[identity profile] zouichi.livejournal.com 2011-04-01 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'll go with that, then. I don't think there are many people attuned to the warp where I'm from. Or any, actually."

[identity profile] futureisclear.livejournal.com 2011-04-01 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
"Strange. Perhaps you simply have not detected it..." Well, that would be an interesting thought. A galaxy without the warp? The Eldar would never have gone anywhere.
ext_988045: (Zouichi: ...?)

[identity profile] zouichi.livejournal.com 2011-04-01 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"What exactly is the warp?" Because honestly, she could be talking about anything, but Zouichi figured she was talking about some sort of life force.

[identity profile] futureisclear.livejournal.com 2011-04-01 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"A dimension parallel to our own. It can be tapped into using the mind and used for travel or to draw great power for the use of a person. There are... perils... of course, but my people have generally learned how to deal with them."

Except for that whole creating a Chaos God thing. Yeah.
ext_988045: (Zouichi: ...?)

[identity profile] zouichi.livejournal.com 2011-04-01 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
He shook his head. "If it does exist in my world, we never discovered a way to tap into it. But it sounds like quite an achievement.

"What kind of perils?"

[identity profile] futureisclear.livejournal.com 2011-04-01 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"There are creatures who inhabit it, who will attempt to strip your soul; devour it. Travelling through it via ship is perilous as well - you may arrive at your destination before you ever departed or two thousand years later than you intended. But for the most part, it is a stable form of interstellar travel."
ext_988045: (Zouichi: grim)

[identity profile] zouichi.livejournal.com 2011-04-02 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
He grimaced. "And what keeps those creatures from wandering out past the warp, into your own world? I don't suppose you ask them politely."

This warp sounded like a navigational nightmare. But the soul-removing didn't sound too far removed from what could happen right here in the Bleed.
