Last Straw

She went straight to the Sensoriums. Her feelings were all over the place, and she had to get away from people right now. She remembered all too well what happened to Alex when he lost Luna: she knew she had to find a way to take her aggression out. There was pain and self loathing and unspeakable things she was sorting through, but right now it was nothing but anger she was feeding on. She closed her eyes when she entered, concentrating on the enemies she;s fought while she'd been on the ship.

The Terminators. The T-Rex. The Nightmare King's monster minions. The traps Hal had laid for them. They came one at a time but Katara was ready, steeling herself to calmly maneuver out of the traps, to find a way to take down the terminator most efficiently, and those alone took more than a few hours. It was when she got to the nightmare King's minions, however, that Katara stopped being cautious. Now she ripped into them, stabbing at them with ice shards and freezing them on the spot before blowing through them, and slowly her determined face gave away to that of rage. As she started to remember their fights, their hugs, their talks, she switched to the Bene Gesserit fighting style, her hits were starting to get more serious, leaving many injured in her wake, though she received a few cuts herself. When she was done an hour later, it faded, all of it, and she was left in water, where she had heard Sokka once talk to Toph about how she'd been like a mother to her, and she couldn't stand it anymore. She let out a scream, primal and pained.

"WHY?! WHY BRING HIM HERE JUST TO TAKE HIM AWAY?! ALL THIS TIME, JUST TO TAKE HIM AND NOT HAVE AANG HERE AND MAKE ZUKO FORGET WHAT WE ALL DID?? WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME!?"

And she dissolved into tears here, the sun sinking into the clouds and leaving a dark, lonely pond.

"Yes, definitely! She's head of the magical department, her with her wife Fate! I know them and their daughter Vivio: they're all very nice people, but really strong in action too. I've never seen fighting quite like that."

Not that she was a slouch herself, but their way of fighting was so different from her own.

She gave Vita a smile that clearly showed her thanks. "I never got to thank you for helping Beastboy with that training session though. I know you haven't joined yet, but I'd love it if you wanted to eventually. My session only got one person, but I think he's showing progress! How did you guys do? Overlord Zetta's session was...well, really intense."

"Hayate's with the magic depart ment as well, so of course I'm looking around there, too. I have to watch Nanoha and Hayate's backs! SOMEONE has to, when they get reckless."

Well, Vita had a tendency to get reckless too, of course, but that didn't count. She didn't bother hiding her protectiveness in that part, it would be too obvious to hide, anyway. Hayate was protected by her for obvious reasons (being that Hayate was Vita's mistress) and Nanoha had earned that by deed.

"As for our training session, it was okay, basic stuff. Thankfully I'm used to starting like that."

And whacking someone silly who didn't immediately defend when told to, but that was just how she worked. Luckily, she was skilled enough to avoid seriously harming people even by hard hits with her hammer.

"Oh, maybe I'll meet her someday!" Katara said brightly, "Are you and Hayate...you know...together?"

Katara didn't know how to phrase it: girlfriend and girlfriend? Significant others? Was there some word for it? She had only learned that girls could be with each other romantically since meeting Nanoha and Fate. Not that she had a problem with that: if anything, those two were an example of a relationship of two balanced people who could actually fight alongside each other without being at each others' throats.

"I figured you were a fighter if you know them. Did they teach you anything new at all though? I know that we all have different fighting styles, so I figured you might have seen something new."

She eyed the hammer. "I was told that...talks, right?"

"Err, often, I mean, thats what I do." Vita replied, not really getting the gist of the sentence...yet. Sure she was together with Hayate a lot, although not often enough due to the current situation.

"Not yet, but to be fair, I have been fighting for a lot longer than it seems, so I saw a lot of different ways to battle already. The biggest surprise actually were beastboy's abilities."

She padded her hammer. "Yup, he does! Hey Eisen, we're talking about you."

And then Vita suddenly blinked.

[* Translation: "Indeed, I can speak, miss" in Ancient Belkan/German. For some reason, most people understand him just fine, tho. It's probably magic!]

"Together?! You meant like Nanoha and Fate? O-of course not, we couldn't, she-she's just my mistress and that's all! I don't know what Beastboy told you, but he got it wrong!"

Clearly. And her behavior wasn't clichéd tsundere-ish behavior at all, really. Hush.

"I thought you might have: I'm still starting to get an idea of what everyone on the team can do. I'm trying to plan out new training sessions accordingly, you know? It'd be good to see you in action personally though. That way, we could see how we could help you, and how you could help the others at the same time."

She stared at the hammer in dumbfoundment. "Wow! A weapon that talks! That must be very useful! Um, is it actually a weapon that talks, of a person turned into one?

Hey, Stacy was weird like that.

Katara gave her a grin. "Ohh, so you're still trying to find a way to approach her? I should have guessed. Yeah, Beastboy hasn't told me anything about you two, so...you kinda gave yourself away. Tell me about her!"

Matchmaking was still matchmaking no matter WHAT gender.

"Oh, Graf Eisen is an armed device, and all armed devices talk. Nanoha's Raising Heart does, too, for example. And he sure is useful, we two are somewhat infamous as a team."

"D-didn't you hear what I just said!? Hayate's my mistress and that is completely all!" Vita blurted out, then slumped. "It totally isn't like that! All of us Wolkenritter lo- like Hayate. She's kind and wonderful and likes to dress us up somehow and she gave us everything we have. That's all!"

It was pretty hard to convince someone of something that clearly wasn't too true.

"You can't really talk with water, so I guess you guys are lucky. Anyway, even without talking devices I've seen Nanoha and Fate do some extraordinary things. I'm a little envious."

"You sound like you're trying really hard to convince me," Katara teased, then her eyes softened. "Besides, its good to care about someone that way, especially if they're here. You sound like she means a lot to you, and I hope she realizes that. It's sweet!"

Leave it to Katara to take a depressing event and turn it into yet another "love is great:" speech.

"Oh, I'm sure they used their devices at the time, too." Vita said - after all, the armed devices didn't always talk, and from what she remembered, Nanoha and Fate relied on them like everyone else who used Mid-Childan (or Belkan) magic.

"As for the other thing, she DOES mean a lot to me, but ...augh!"

Vita seemed visibly frustrated, she WAS weak to teasing like that. Her last resort: Playing it down.

"I mean, of course she knows I care about her! But we all do, all of us Wolkenritter. Reinforce does, too, I think! Hayate's a special person and we treat her fitting to that!"

It probably was not a very effective method to convince someone. Yep, Vita really was better at fighting stuff.

Katara nodded. That made sense. Why not use every advantage you had, right? It would be foolish not to. She knew that when battle came, she would definitely be using what the Bene Gesserit had taught her with training her body and the artifact that Negi had given her.

Here though, Katara purposely looked as if she took the information the wrong way: even she could joke around. "So you're saying that Hayate is with you AND Reinforce? Wow, she's lucky. I don't think I'd stand for it if I were you, Vita, her having her cake and eating it too."

Oh yeah, she went there.

"N-no! Thats not what I meant at all! Y-you're just teasing me!"

Or was she? Vita wasn't completely sure. "We're her guards and such."

Katara laughed. "You make it easy, honestly. But why be ashamed about it? I mean, I guess you might not be ready to tell her, that's why you're all fidgety. You being her guard must be tough to have any relationship though."

Even matchmaking, Katara strives to be a little sensible.

"Augh! Just drop it! I'll always be with her whatever happens and thats all that matters!"

She shook her head for emphasis. "And I'm not fidgety! I'm durable, tough, that fits, but not fidgety!"

Well, the battle clearly was being won by Katara, though. Poor little knight...

Katara laughed, but quietly, so as not to sound condescending. "If you say so. I won't press it, you look pretty bugged."

Besides, she didn't want to seem ungrateful about her cheering her up. "By the way, I like what you're wearing! What made you choose that anyway?"

"Uhm...I wasn't bugged!"

...Still, she was glad for the other topic. Unfortunately for Vita, it led right back to the old one if she was truthful, and it didn't occur to her to lie.

"Well, I didn't really chose them, Hayate did."

"But that's nothing special! She picked all our clothes, those of Signum and Shamal and Rein and Zafira, too! She likes to do things like that."

"You totally were," Katara said, not at all fooled for an instant.

Katara grinned. "So she's your clothing designer? Nice deal. She looks like she has excellent taste. But you know, I really wasn't going to tease you about the clothes making thing. You sorta make it easy to tease you."

The clothes WERE nice though.

"She's also something like that..." Vita mumbled. It wasn't HER fault that things were set up that way, she hadn't been asked when she had been created that way by the Book of the Azure Sky.

Thankfully, Hayate did have taste in designing clothes, unlike those before her.

"I am really not that easy to tease normally, you know!" The little knight tried to argue fruitlessly, to save at least some of her image.

Katara nodded. She made a guess that this group from Nanoha and Fate's world were tight knit and helped each other out in any way that they could. She didn't understand all of it, but who knew? The might be able to help them out more in time.

"I can tell," Katara said, grinning. "But when it comes to subjects like that, its easy to be caught unaware. If my guy was here, I think I;d be the same way."

"Well, yeah-" Vita began, and immediately gave Katara a glare. "I didn't agree that Hayate was my girl you know..." She added weakly.

It seemed that Katara sure had a similar effect on Vita to the one she had had on Fate ~~according to what her mun read~~.

"I didn't say she wa-as," Katara said in a sing-songy voice. "Maybe someone is protesting a bit too much!"

She smiled, but it wasn't teasing now. "So...do you think you might want to join The Outsiders, or was that just a one time thing?"

Vita sighed. Damn it, why did some people manage that so often?

"I'd like helping you guys out still." Vita answered Katara's question, and nodded tentatively. "Course, I'm also with the magic department, since Hayate's there."

She wasn't really sure how it worked on this ship, to be honest, so far she had simply gone along with what seemed to make sense to her.

She nodded. "That's okay. That Lash girl is a polite still, but being in one department won't bar you here, just the opposite. we aren't supposed to be a club that excludes people: just hang with us and train with us whenever you have the chance!"

Despite the teasing (or maybe because of it?) Katara liked Vita being around. She was interesting, and her personality was definitely needed.

"Sounds good!" Vita said, and nodded for emphasis. Some of the people she had met in the outsiders reminded her a bit of Section Six back at her homeworld, and while she wouldn't really admit to liking them (she was, after all, tough and distant and gruff and stuff, and certainly had no soft spots for people, or anything!) she found the experience pleasing enough...well...while she wasn't being teased, of course. Grr.

"At least you're making a lot more sense than some of the people I saw around."

Katara was beginning to hear more and more about how others were dissatisfied with what was happening on the ship, and frankly, it bothered her. When she had spoken to Overlord Zetta earlier, he's spoken of the eventual splintering off of groups that might jeopardize the safety of the crew. Katara had expected to hear dissent over their situation from the older crew though: that more of the pod popped thought this was unnerving.

Katara, ever the ambassador, wanted to know what THEY were seeing.

"What other people? What have they been doing?"

"Nothing actually problematic for serious stuff, just stupid and annoying, like someone complaining about language and treating me like a kid, thats all."

In other words, nothing that actually mattered, Vita really had just tried to make a roundabout compliment without sounding too complimenting. That she had failed was just more evidence of her not being good at that diplomatic business! Better to leave it to people like Katara, that's for sure.
