Mission 01: Recovery [Briefing]

The Meeting is interrupted.

There is a resounding mental alarum that sounds through the ship. Nearly "deafening." Lights flash from places for extra emphasis, making it impossible to ignore.

||Attention, Attention. All personnel please report to the Observation Deck. Attention, Attention. All personnel please report to the Observation Deck. Attention, Attention, all personnel...||

They can hear it through the meeting bubble and Jaime drops it.

It's entirely likely that she won't stop repeating the announcement until, well, everyone reports to Obs Deck. The mouth in the huge statue opens, revealing a screen. On it, the dossier for the mission flickers into display, understandable to every person there. Smaller copies of the dossier appear in holographic form in front of everyone.

The planet's stats, right next to a rotating picture of it, marled blue and green, are as follows:

Planet Designation: Earth-534A342Z
Status: Terrestrial, H-class.
Non-sentient life: Extensive flora and fauna.
Semi-Sentient Life: Yes.
Sentient Life: No.
Water: 82% of the planet's surface.

Climate: Similar to Earth's Mediterranean climates/desert climates in some areas. [Click here for cultural equivalents for non-Earth cultures.]
Landscape: Varied. Lightning storms plague the plains and mountain plateaus. Tectonic upheaveal.
Air: Normoxic concentration: 28% oxygen, 62% nitrogen, 5% xenon, 5% trace gases, such as hydrogen, krypton, and argon.

Air Pressure: 14.543 pounds per square inch.
Sky: Blue with orangeish-gold clouds (clouds ride rather low in the sky due to gravity being stronger and therefore reflect the colors on the surfaces of the plateaus.
Sun: A class M5V, a red dwarf star.

Warnings: Wildlife and plant-life can be hazardous.

Mission: Track escape pod vessels with the scanners provided. Manually activate recovery processes. Return to Main Planet Pod.

--

Following that, there is a table displaying the escape pods--they looked like little bugs or maybe giant beans. Something between plant and insect.

||Attention, podmates. Attention.||

Apparently Stacy wants their attention.

||It is critical that you pay attention at this time.||

The former Browncoat stood not far off, arms crossed over his chest as he studied the planet keeping everything in mind Stacy had said. When Cale spoke he cast a sidelong glance at the kid. "Most ain't ever seen it from this point of view, kid." Others reactions just got a chuckle. It was kinda funny in a way.

Worf simply grumbles, checking the power on his hand phaser and tricorder. "It is a fascinating sight for those new to space. However, I am not eager to...work for this ship."

Geoff stares at the scene, and then sits down. Hard.

All right, so in theory the concept of being in a sky ship, that was okay, as was the vague notion of other worlds. He could accept those. But this? He was so not ready for this.

Geoffrey Chaucer is, for now, struck speechless with the beauty and wonder of it. And possibly a little terrified.

"Most don't get the chance. And some never imagined it," Kate remarked in passing as she noticed Geoff's reaction.

"Be nice to see real ground again."

Elle flails, dismayed at having to be grabbed again, but at the sign of the approaching planet, she clings for dear life as if she expects the gravity to suddenly go out.

"Whoa..." She cracks a hesitant grin. "That is awesome."

"...hn."

He's going to have to reassess a few things once this mission is over.

Spock watches the others in silence, his arms tucked behind his back. The planet was not so irregular, but the response from some of the crew was remarkable.

Javert struggles for his usual composure, almost dumbstruck by the sight before him. The stars, well, he had been able to ignore those; This, though, he knew he would remember for a very long time.

"In the true definition of the word, I believe." He responds to Elle.

"I feel violated," Tim mutters, shuddering a little at the tentacle-grab. They write porn like that, you know. He looks out over the world... and misses home. It's not like he's seen Earth from space that often, but he's been off-planet before, and has always enjoyed the sight. "Earth is better," he says with a slight sigh.

Doc didn't think Earth from space was all that great. Then again, the first, last and only time Doc was in space he was much too preoccupied with fighting RoboDracula and trying not to die from being burned up in the atmosphere on re-entry to really enjoy the view.

"I'll have to take your word on that." he says quietly to Tim.

This planet is nothing like what he recalls of Earth, and it's probably very dangerous and all that on the surface, but the initial view is breathtaking if nothing else.

"It... uh... kinda looks like Earth. If you squint."

Tony tilts his head to one side, squinting.

"The view of a planet from space never ceases to make me wonder," Picard commented. "In the end, we are all so small. And yet, despite that, or perhaps even in spite of it, a single soul can do so much."

Picard set his hand on the window before him, as if trying to touch the world as they approached it. "It is an incredible and humbling sight," he mused.

The special suit makes it a little harder to bounce eagerly, but there is a definite lift to Allen's step as he leans against the window, looking at all that planetary glory waiting to be explored. Picard's confirmation just helps.

"I always kinda wanted to try being an astronaut," he adds. It's a lot less eloquent, but it'll do.

Worf grunts.

"Space walking is not all it is cracked up to be. Believe me." He checks his phaser and tricorder again. Yep, still in working order. And his mek'leth is where it's supposed to be.

Smug Mal? Never.

With pistol in his hand the Captain gives it a brief look over before returning it to the holster strapped to his side. "Just remember the small little pieces of metal, fabric, an' plastics that keep you from gettin' th' life sucked out of you." Giving a toothy grin and a slight raise of his brows, Mal went back to crossing his arms to wait and watch. "Ever get off of here and I'll let you try helpin' patch up Serenity, kid," he said to Allen.

"Good God, it's beautiful," says Cybil, next to Picard, her hand on the window, her blue eyes sparkling with...something. "I..."

She blinks, and then admits something that might not make a whole lot of sense to most, but it had to do with that 'I came from hell on Earth' thing she'd spoken of.

"I think I forgot." Her voice is more distant. "That it could be."

But why is this all so familiar?

She'd never been in space before. Before all this.

...had she?

When that thing had...possessed her down near the gate she'd seen such strange things. Things she wasn't sure were memories or not.

Re: End Briefing - Separation and Deployment

[identity profile] clear-horizons.livejournal.com 2009-05-13 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
Picard turned to Cybil, mild surprise on his face. The surprise quickly became a warm smile, however, and he moved his hand from the window to her shoulder. "At the very least," he said, "one can take refuge in such beauty, if we are to go on more missions like this, Miss Bennett." He turned to regard the view once more as the planet grew closer.

"I swear I will do everything within my power to return everyone home. Many have said they have tasks that yet need to be done. Others still have family and loved ones waiting for them." The bald captain chuckled, only now fully appreciating the irony and humor of his situation.

"And yet, I ... I am on the same mission I was on before, leading through new worlds and new civilizations. Exploring new things and discovering new ideas ... Stacy never took me from my mission. She simply shifted my focus."

"Not that she can be trusted, but this--this part, seeing this, is nice."

She shake her head, still looking out--still looking a the backdrop of stars behind the planet and it's own nearby star.

"I could see this every day. It feels like...a dead end where I'm from."

It is a dead end. There is no home for her to go back to. Just cold fog, blood and rot, and fire. Even if they could get home, would she just be put back where and when she'd been, in the grasp of Silent Hill?

Cybil tries not to think about it. The crew has to be protected. They have to be returned to their homes, and it will be done. If that means she has to get sent home too, well...

She'll try to burn that bridge down cross that bridge when she comes to it.

Instead of anything maudlin, there's a slight, cavalier grin. "I'm starting to wonder if I was born a few centuries too early, a few universes too far away, if there are ones out there where this could've been an everyday thing."

"Then you might also be able to consider it a privilege, having an oppurtunity to see such a sight at all." Spock remarks, "There are those even in our time who will never see their own planet from orbit."

Jean's gaze was focused on the planet and a smile slowly began to form on her lips. It was lovely, and in a way comforting. Like the others had said before, it in a way reminded her of the images she'd seen of Earth.

Looking over at Spock, her eyebrow arched. "Perhaps you're right - though I think a lot of us would like the view a lot more if we'd seen it under different circumstances."

She shrugged her shoulders though and turned back to the view of the planet. "It is lovely though..."

Cale made no secret about rolling his eyes at everyone's wonderment and awe at the giant sphere rotating in space outside the observation deck. "It's. A. Planet," he repeated.

"There are only like several hundred billion of them in the entire galaxy. What's next? 'Oh, wow! A grain of sand!'"

"What, is the lack of puppies on the ship getting to you?" Leela chimes up. "Y'know, nothing to kick and everything?"

She claps her hands together.

"Maybe on another mission, Stacy will put us on a planet with people. We can find you some babies. You can steal their candy."

He rolled his eyes again but, this time, coupled it with what had become his trademark scowl.

"Shouldn't you be admiring the size of Bonehead's sword?" he countered. He's not jealous or anything.
