The Battle That Ended The Century

People say that war is hell. This looked it.

Buildings and cars and bodies are scattered like broken toys as far as the eye can see, stretching out toward a dirty horizon. Even the clouds seems streaked with mud and blood, and they're taking it out on everyone below with a constant stream of cold, soaking rain.

The sounds of fighting seem to come from all directions, but at this moment, there's no one else in sight.

A breather. The calm before the storm.

[[OOC: This is for everyone who was involved with "The Lurking Fear". Questions go to Milo or Kaylin.]]

It was a lot harder to work with a bum arm, but at least the wound wasn't hurting as badly as it had been before. Granted, if Kaylee shifted wrong or pulled on it too much it was right back to square one with the pain. The fact that she was working on putting a gorram tank back together probably wasn't the best of ideas when avoiding strenuous activity. It hadn't been too badly damaged to start with, but there were still plenty of bits and pieces that had needed some form of replacement and repair. Enough to keep her mind off of other things, in any case.

She had her right arm shoved down in the engine now, her left having finally given up on her altogether. It was frustrating, trying to wire something with only one hand, and attempting to keep the pouring rain from flooding the engine at the same time. The mechanic turned away from her work for a moment, and called out to the nearest person. "Hey, mind givin' me a hand real quick here?"

"Hang on," Billy called when he saw Kaylee working, scrambling across the slippery ground and watching out for attacks. He barely dodged some more rifle fire, tossing a grenade when he saw no crew members were there.

Upon reaching her, he noticed her injured arm, nodded gravely, and peeked inside the engine, careful to pull his dripping hair out of the way. It didn't take long for him to see a problem or three. "Classic gorram tank, right?"

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2010-03-07 08:51 am (UTC)(link)
There were more problems with the tank than Kaylee really wanted to count, but it was still better than the other options she'd found thus far. "Couldn't've put it better myself," she agreed, with a laugh that sounded more tired than anything. Her right hand pointed out the main problem she was focusing on for the moment. "If you could give me a quick hand with those wires there, it'd be more'n appreciated. Figure at least those'll get the spark back into it, and then I can move it to someplace a little less rainy to work on the rest."

"I'm on it." And so he was, first quickly shaking his hands dry and then manipulating the wires. It took a few moments to wiggle the right connection together, but soon the repair was made. And Billy only had a slightly singed hand to show for it.

When he finished, he said "I'm staying with you. Can this tank really be operated with one hand?" Eyebrow raise.

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2010-03-07 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
If it had been anyone else sticking their hands down into the engine, Kaylee might have been a little more worried, probably would have hovered a bit. But Billy knew what he was doing, so Kaylee let herself relax a moment, casting only a small frown at his singed hand as he pulled it out.

"I can use it alright, it's numbed out," she assured him. There was no use in taking up his time if it could be helped, but even raising her arm to pull herself up sent another shock of pain through her. Only a slight wince in response--it had numbed out quite a bit--and she nodded to Billy. "Might not hurt to have a little extra help, though."

Shaking out his injured hand, he added, "All right. You're probably safer in the tank anyway. I'll follow on foot and be on the lookout for danger."

At the same time he reached out to her, making sure she could reach the tank's entrance safely.

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2010-03-07 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
"Thanks a ton, Billy," she smiled, giving him a pat on the arm.

Careful to make sure nothing was coming their way first, Kaylee climbed up to the hatch and slipped inside, somewhat clumsily. The inside didn't look much better than the outside, but the controls worked and there was at least enough light that she could see what she was doing.

The tank moved slowly, but at least it was moving. They just needed to find a decent place to park it, and all would be shiny.

Giving her one last weary smile as she descended into the tank, he hopped down and started his trek behind the vehicle. For the first little while, nothing of note happened. She drove, he kept a lookout.

Then, he spotted a sheltered place...that a soldier was apparently guarding. Yhere were a few bullet rounds, causing Billy to hit the mud and roll. Soon, the gun made the telltale sounds of an empty chamber and was thrown to the side. Thrown forward was the soldier, sensing weakness in Billy and preparing to slice him to pieces.

Billy was ready. A few lacerations, slices, and well-placed feet later, the way was clear and Billy scrambled to catch up with the tank.

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2010-03-08 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
There wasn't so much driving on Kaylee's part as constant repair where a wire came loose while steering the tank in the right direction. Still, due to months of practice from working with Mal, she managed to keep her guard up, and as soon as the gunfire started up, she was moving the tank along to get out of the way.

She listened closely for several moments for more gunfire, then headed for shelter. All seemed quiet, and the tank slowed enough that it wouldn't run into anything while Kaylee shouted back up through the half-busted hatch. "Y'alright, Billy?"
morphitudinous: (Are you reading that correctly?)

[personal profile] morphitudinous 2010-03-08 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
"Affirmative! Keep going, I'll take care of this!" A small unit of soldiers was coming their way, preparing to bust up the tank some more. Billy hurled a grenade as quickly as he could while dodging bullets, using the cover of thick sheets of metal, darkness, and trash. Somehow, thank the Power, he avoided being shot.

He really hoped they reached the shelter soon, if only to get out of the rain for a few moments. It was starting to get cold.

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2010-03-08 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Kaylee didn't like what she was hearing and more than she liked how little she could see outside the tank. But orders were orders, and she knew enough to keep going if someone told her to.

It took longer than she would have liked to get the tank into the small bit of shelter, but eventually it was in. Now it was just a matter of checking to see if Billy had made it, too. If trouble was still about, it was better for her to just stay put, but she didn't like the idea of leaving Billy alone. She looked through any space she could to see if the coast was clear before heading back toward the hatch.

[personal profile] morphitudinous 2010-03-08 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Fortunately, the coast was finally clear. Looking and listening for trouble as he did so, Billy climbed up to meet Kaylee outside the tank and help her out if she needed it. He didn't look too much worse for the wear, excluding the addition of more mud and a few thin lines of blood on his arms that throbbed in protest.

"Kaylee?" He poked at the door, waiting for her.

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2010-03-08 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Good, he was okay, and if he was calling down to her it probably meant they were in the clear. She opened up the hatch with little difficulty, and smiled up at him. "Least we're out of the rain for a bit."

Climbing out was a bit trickier than just sliding in had been, and she finally did have to accept Billy's help with it. "Thanks, Billy," she added, once she was out. "Would've been a difficult move to make without ya."

[personal profile] morphitudinous 2010-03-08 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
"It wasn't a problem," Billy assured with the slightest of smiles as he carefully guided her to the top of the tank. It was trickier than usual with slippery hands, but he managed.

Then, he carefully slid down to examine the rest of the tank. "What needs to be done now?"

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2010-03-08 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
"Even if it ain't a problem in the least, it's still appreciated."

Repairs, on the other hand...Kaylee wrinkled her nose as she followed Billy off of the tank. "More'n I'd care to say, really, but given the other choices she's in mint condition. Treads are doin' alright, but I do wanna see if I can't do somethin' 'bout makin' the steerin' work better, and then there's the shorted-out wires every two inches, 'n platin' gone to gou shi..."
morphitudinous: (...what in the name of)

[personal profile] morphitudinous 2010-03-08 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Billy planted his chin in his hand, giving their dilemma careful thought. "I'll begin work on the wiring, if that's all right with you. Do you want to examine the steering?"

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2010-03-08 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
"Works fine for me," Kaylee agreed, moving to slide under the tank. "Gotten a pretty good look at the steerin' from inside, anyhow. Can just go right off of that."
morphitudinous: (Repairs in progress)

[personal profile] morphitudinous 2010-03-08 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
"Excellent," Billy almost smiled, then set about his work on the wiring. "That connection links with this auxillary wire..." He mutters to himself as he works, digging around. But he doesn't seem to have learned from the first time, as he's singed his hand again. Yelping, he pulled his hands out, tried to wring some water out of his shirt, then attempted to dry his hands on it.

That taken care of (somewhat), he went back to work. "How's it coming down there?" he called.

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2010-03-08 06:54 am (UTC)(link)
Well, there was half of the problem already. One of the stabilizer bars had snapped, which only served to throw the wheels out of sync with each other. An easy fix, normally, but a bit of a pain in the neck with a busted arm. She repaired it as quickly and painlessly as she could, before moving on to remove one of the panels underneath to take a better look inside.

"Definitely seen better days." Her reply was slightly muffled, her head inside the compartment with her hands, though the rest of her was positioned in a bit of an awkward lean to eliminate too much use of her shoulder. It was bleeding again, and it crossed her mind that she should probably find a medic one of these hours to take a look at it, but first things first.

Wires all in order, she peeked back out at Billy, and tossed him a mostly-dry rag from her pack. "That might help some."

[personal profile] morphitudinous 2010-03-08 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"Thank you," he huffed gratefully, finally drying his hands enough to avoid electrocuting himself. The work progressed slowly, and his rain-stained and muddied glasses didn't help matters any. Eventually, though, that section was done. He reached for another, still half-distracted by listening for enemy forces, and it went on.

When he finished, he hopped down and peeked at her. "I'm not sure we can do anything about the plating, but other than that it looks better. Do you need anything?"

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2010-03-08 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Repairs always did go a lot faster when you had someone to help, and Kaylee trusted Billy as much as she trusted herself when it came to fixing things up. Pleased as pie with their work, Kaylee crawled out from under the tank and grinned back at their work. "Platin's pretty well shot," she agreed. It would have to do, though.

"A break from all this warrin' would be nice, but if wishes were horses..." She glanced up at him, her smile a bit unsure, before she nodded down at her arm. "You any good when it comes to at least cleanin' somethin' up?"

[personal profile] morphitudinous 2010-03-09 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
"We could all go horse riding together," he finished wistfully. Billy had always wanted to give horse riding a try, but now was obviously not the time. Maybe someday.

Upon looking at her arm, he nodded. "We all had to learn basic first aid techniques as Rangers, because we couldn't rely on being able to access the medical facility right away." As he said this, he considered how to go about finding bandaging. No immediate source seemed to be available, so he took what he could: sliced a strip off the bottom of his shirt, stuck it out in the rain and washed off the mud, then bit his lip and carefully wiped her arm.

"Do you have any cloth that would be better for bandaging, or should I cut you another slice?"

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2010-03-09 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
A nice ride on a horse sounded a whole lot better than their current situation, and Kaylee could only nod in agreement. If only.

Kaylee clenched her teeth and held her breath as the cloth came into contact with the gunshot wound. Luckily, she'd been able to keep it decently clean, and it didn't look as bad as it might have if she hadn't taken any care of it at all. The surrounding area was a bit swollen and red, though, which didn't seem to be a very good start.

It was hard not to pull away from Billy every time the cloth brushed past, but she managed it with only a few winces and whimpers. There were a couple more rags in her pack, and she pulled out the cleanest looking one. "'Bout all I got, but it should work."

Billy felt absolutely terrible about causing yet another friend pain after everything he'd done, but he knew this service was necessary. She might notice that he winced along with her the first few times, and not because his hand was burned.

"I'm sorry, I'm almost done," he murmured, briefly brushing her back with his fingers as he moved to tie the bandage as securely and comfortably as he could. There was an angle he could use to keep it secure without placing too much pressure---there. Done.

"I presume you'll be operating the tank now?" Billy asked, gently tapping her uninjured arm.

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2010-03-09 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
As far as Kaylee was concerned, he was helping her more than hurting her. Blistered hands, burned fingers, scrapes and cuts...she could handle all of those on her own without so much as an "ow," but this wasn't exactly a papercut, and it was bound to hurt some for a while.

"Most anybody's done for it so far, so 'M plenty thankful. No need to be apologizin' to me for it. Ain't your fault at all." Under other circumstances, she probably would have ruffled his hair or given his head an affectionate pat. For now, though, she stayed still until he was done.

"I can drive her, not a problem. It'll be good to have to move people about, if nothin' else." She smiled, the smallest bit of unease showing through. "Ain't one for shootin', myself..."
