From Beyond
The crew will see them slinking off, disappearing around hallways--shifting shadow shapes and the backs of heads ducking around corners. They're always people they think they know. Dead loved ones, perhaps, or loved ones they're not sure are dead or alive. They lead crew members into dangerous places, sudden drops, parts of Stacy where things can go wrong.
And they do go wrong. Floors drop out. Ducts become damaged somehow, invisibly, and suddenly spew hot steam. Around the children, items slam into walls--poltergeist activity.
Whether these are really those lost souls, or just illusions, is hard to tell. Either way, those that are part-ghost or have supernatural powers will have a helluva workout. The upside is the presence of the ghosts might disrupt the Waking Dreams to allow people to escape them more easily.
Which is good because the dreams will start to cause injuries now. Real ones.
And refusing to go to sleep doesn't save you when the dreams can happen while you're awake.
[ooc: Waking dreams will continue--and start causing injuries. Furthermore, ghostly apparitions will start to cause poltergeist activity and lead the crew into danger. Start to raise the alarm, meatship. It's starting.]

She doesn't have to say that if he was already injured and invisible, then he might not be able to turn visible after that fall. "Can your scanner find him?"
no subject
Lyle takes a deep breath and focuses. "You have a sprained ankle but you should be fine. I can carry you back up."
And then ... she probably can't walk to medical herself, can she? But if Jacques fell, he might be in much worse condition.

Lyle quickly searches the area for anything that shouldn't be there, glancing upwards every once in a while to gauge if he's still under the fallen part of the floor. It's not a very careful search, but it's thorough because Lyle can't keep track of where he's been very well and searches the area several times.
His body's trying to fall asleep and panic at the same time.

That's all she gets out of him before a bit more of the ceiling collapses, and the bobbing light disappears with a yelp.
no subject
"Lyle?! Can you hear me?"
no subject
There's some coughing and the sounds of bits of floor sliding and tumbling.
"Yeah." The whole length of his back is on fire, but his pride hurts more. He was an idiot, playing around down here and risking Ahava's life. He should've at least gotten her somewhere stable first.
"Keep talking so I can find you, I lost my light."
no subject
"Did you get badly hurt? I can try contacting someone else to come help us. Maybe they can even bring something to see if your friend is down here as well." She coughed and licked her lips, the dust floating around drying out her throat. "I'm sure Querl or one of the other Legionnaires would be here in no time..."
It sounds a little like Ahava's babbling, but there's a sort of odd flatness to her voice as well; she did hit her head a little hard after all.
no subject
"I'm fine." There's an edge of pain to his words, but it's true. It hurts like hell but it's not much of an injury. He floats toward her, trying to keep his back as stiff as possible.
Lyle considers, trying to think rationally through the haze of pain and lack of sleep. He could have someone else take Ahava to medical while he continues looking. He latches onto that solution immediately. He doesn't want to leave when the slightest chance of finding Jacques remains.
But he's been over the area underneath the collapse several times. Jacques isn't down here, and he wouldn't have run and left them down here. It must have been a waking dream.
He isn't abandoning Jacques again. He just needs to convince himself of that.
"Let's get you out of here." He's landed next to her in the dark and is holding out a hand.

That insistence is not entirely for her sake.
"And I'm fine. Just bruised." Just bruised everywhere, but it's irrelevant. He's too busy being mad at himself right now to care.
no subject
"I'm not," she managed, "going to be too heavy for you?"
no subject
"No." It's going to hurt, of course, but breathing hurts right now. He wraps his arms around her, cinched at her waist. "Hold on."
It's not far to fly to get back up, but he grunts a little as he takes her weight. He makes sure they're a safe distance from the collapse before setting her back down again anyway.
He takes a moment to get his breath, trying to rein in his irritation with himself.

"We should both head to medical," she said after a moment, still wincing. Of course the hard part was going to be getting there on their own.

He removes his flight ring and holds it out to her.
"Don't get ahead of me, we should stick together," Instead of doing something stupid like they had before.
He half thought to make a joke about codenames, but he's not doing such a good job at being lighthearted right now.
no subject
"How does it work?" she asked eventually.
no subject
Eventually, he decides which way to go and starts off, expecting her to follow.
no subject
"Takes a little getting used to," she remarked. But it came easily enough and she followed Lyle, keeping an eye on him in case he turned out to be hurt worse than he was letting on.
no subject
"Most people immediately fly up high and start doing loops." Very trusting, most people.
"I want to apologize for getting you involved in this." It's said without looking at her or stopping, in a simple neutral voice.
no subject
She was silent for a moment after he spoke again, following him as they retraced their steps. "It's not your fault. I would have wanted to check everything as well if it had been someone I knew."
no subject
He closes his mouth. This really isn't the time to be berating himself. Instead, he checks his omnicom, partially because he doesn't know what to say.
"It looks like illusions have been leading people into danger all over the ship."
So that really wasn't Jacques. Good. So long as he's in the pods somewhere.

Lyle's lip subtly tightens into a line at the gesture. "Yes, I will."
