Get you Gone

The meeting is over, the teams have been assigned, the plans have been laid out. It's time to get weapons.

It's time to wish each other luck, and say goodbyes--with the hope that they're only "good bye for now"s.

It's about to get very hairy from here on out.

Even when things got bad, Terry was always more comfortable with the Batsuit on. It still felt a bit lonely, with none of the chatter he normal got from Max or Bruce, but it still helped his confidence.

Terry went over his gear. He checked the suit's diagnostics and power levels, and went through his belt. He normally didn't worry about this back home, but on the ship, with no access to replacement parts, or someone he trusted to patch the suit up, he was a bit worried. He was staying behind, so hopefully he wouldn't need to use to much of his gear.

Tim has his armor, his belt... and he's checked all of it. It's in working order, so he's as ready for this as he's going to get.

"Nice suit," he says, nodding at Terry with a little grin. This is the first time he's seen the future batsuit. It's... streamlined. Interesting. And so weird seeing Batman not using a cape.

Terry looked up from checking the batarang-launchers in his wrist, and grinned at Tim. Though, it may have looked a bit odd through the cowl.

"Thanks," he said, "it can fly, y'know. And almost turn invisible." So he felt like showing off a bit. What's wrong with that?

"Yeah?" Tim said, interested. "How does that work--the flying and the invisibility." He paused. "And we'll say I asked that in a curious 'not breaking space-time' kind of way."

Terry smirked. "Well, I can't really explain it great, so I don't think it'll destroy space and time." Hopefully.

"Well, there's jets in the shoes, and they work with these," with that, Terry deployed the suit's wings, "like a glider. And the invisibility... well, it's more like camo. I'm not totally sure on how it works, but it's like this." Terry twisted the center button on his belt, and he faded out of sight. There seemed to be a Batman-shaped blur where he'd been standing, but it was still pretty effective.

Terry twisted the button again, and faded back into view, the wings folding back into the suit. "They both drain a lot of power though. Hopefully... I won't need to use them too much in the City."

"...Okay, clearly, the future has the best toys," Tim said, grinning at him. "Because I definitely wouldn't object to being able to fly or become invisible. That first one would be pretty useful during some of my weekends with the Titans, actually. Since I'm one of two people that would be completely screwed if I were dropped from any serious height

"...Which happens way too often for comfort, really."

He regarded Terry thoughtfully for a moment. "Still. I miss the cape."

"Well, the suit is actually older then I am. But... I guess the old man is just that good at making this kind of stuff."

Terry tensed at that last bit. Those words, coming from any one else, wouldn't have really meant anything. But coming from Tim, it was getting into trigger territory.

"Don't... just. Don't say that again. Ever." Terry said through gritted teeth, trying not to let fear or anger creep into his voice.

Tim blinked a little in surprise. "Uh... okay... Not a fan of the cape idea?" he asked, confused. "I mean--I know they can be inconvenient sometimes, and you have to get used to working with one, but... they provide a lot of protection, and they look damn cool.

"...Not that you don't. I think we just covered how awesome your suit is, though."

Terry sighed. Yeah, keep bringing the future up in front of Tim. Nice job, McGinnis.

"Sorry. It's not that I don't like the cape or anything, it's just... I... eh, forget about it. Sorry." There was really no way to explain himself without giving away a pretty big chunk of the future. And though he wasn't telling Tim everything about himself, he still didn't want to cover it up with a straight-out lie.

"Eh, so, you with GTFO, or Left Behind?" He said awkwardly, trying to change the topic.

Tim blinked a few times, but shrugged, deciding to let it go. Maybe Terry had heard one too many jibes about the costume? "Me? Stay behind?" He gave him a quick smile. "No, I'm on Team GTFO. Sounds like it will be... interesting."

In the Chinese curse sort of way.

Of course he was going. Terry really didn't even know why he asked, the answer was so obvious.

"Well... I'm staying," he said. He felt like a bit of a coward admitting it, but after the mistakes he'd made on the off-ship mission, he felt like he wasn't really ready for trying to deal with an even bigger team.

"Hey," he said hesitantly. He paused, then pulled off his cowl. He felt like he should look Tim in the eyes. "I've sort of made it my job to look out for you while I'm here. I... really can't explain why, but I have. So, since I won't be around, be careful." He wanted so badly to tell Tim why his survival was so important to the future, but he couldn't let himself.

Tim let out a short little laugh. "I'm always careful," he said with a wry smile. "So you'd better take care, too. Because if I come back and my honorary big brother isn't around, who knows what kind of trouble I could get into?"

...Then he winces a little. Okay, bad joke. He's already managed to get himself into plenty of trouble these days.

"...Worse trouble I mean."

Terry didn't even notice the bad joke. He was too busy being confused by something else Tim had said.

"....honorary big brother?" He parroted. He'd never really thought of himself as part of the old family, so hearing Tim call him that was a little... odd.

"Well yeah," Tim said, grinning a little, and relieved Terry hadn't called him on the "getting in trouble" thing. "If you're going to act like one, we may as well call a spade a spade, right? Besides--you're Batman. It kind of makes you part of the family."

Terry was still a bit surprised, but he smiled anyways. It felt... good, having someone call him a part of the family like that. Even though he had stepped up to be Batman in his time, he'd never felt like he was alone in what he did. He wasn't right for the justice league, and most of the more successful heroes thought he was too young to be Batman. Even at home and school he felt out of place, because of his secret and record. Tim may not have known it, but he'd just given him something he'd been trying to find since he first joined the gang, so many years ago - acceptance.

"Hey, wait a minute," he said jokingly, "wouldn't you be the big brother in this? You are, like, what, fifty years older then me?"

Tim blinked in surprise. "That... is an incredibly weird thought, actually. I mean, while it's technically true, standing next to you right now? It's weird to think that you haven't even been born yet in my time." He eyed Terry thoughtfully. "Does this mean I can call you stuff like 'whippersnapper' and complain about kids these days?"

Re: Deployment

[identity profile] beyondgotham.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
It was just as hard for Terry to imagine that the guy standing in front of him may one day be a tool for the Joker. But he didn't say that.

"Hey, I complain about kids these days. My little brother Matt wants to be a werewolf... and the technology exists so he could be. Well, if he wanted to break the law, that is. But he idolizes Batman, so I don't think it would be too hard to scare him out of that idea," Terry said with a grin. Really, all it would take would be a single visit and stern warning from 'Batman' and he could scare his brother out of any illegal activity. Too bad he never had a threat like that hanging over himself.

"Seriously though, Tim. Be careful. The old man... I mean, Bruce, doesn't need to loose you. Trust me on that. I know how important you were - you are to him. And... I don't wanna to loose a brother."

Re: Deployment

[personal profile] mrsarcastic003 2009-10-21 08:10 am (UTC)(link)
That past tense... honestly made Tim a little nervous, but he shook it off. There was no point in worrying too much about it. He'd deal with... whatever happened when it happened.

"I will. I promise." He gave him a wry little grin. "I don't really want to be lost. I think I'd like to keep the Robin survival rate at fifty percent, rather than letting the stats drop to twenty-five."
