Meet-n-Greet

After being released from stasis, having the slime removed from their bodies and clothed in the creepy, pulsing leaf-suit that everyone wore, and being taken to the Weapons & Possessions lockers to collect their belongings, the new arrivals would find themselves standing in the Observation Deck. Round windows lined the fleshy walls, revealing the bright display of lights that was inter-dimensional travel. They would also discover that there were people--members of the command staff and crew that had woken earlier--waiting for them.

"I'll spare you the details." Not that he was in a mood to discuss them anyway.

"Some chick who said she was from engineering offered to get it off. If she can't do it, can you make sure someone does. Being flatscanned like this--" It was humiliating, degrading, and burned his very soul every second he had to endure it. He just wasn't going to admit that out loud. "I just want it off, ok?"

"I'll see what I can do," Picard replied, before pausing and soaking in what the young man had said. "Excuse me, Mister Keller, but what do you mean, 'flatscanned'?" Something about the term and the tone in which Julian had spoken it made the captain feel slightly troubled. The tone was one he recognized as being reserved for insults and the kinds of names one group forced upon another.

There was that brief moment where Julian actually felt something loosely resembling guilty for saying that. Almost like when your parents catch you cursing.

"...'Powerless'." That didn't sound nearly as bad as saying 'human', even though, underneath, that's the word he actually meant. "I wouldn't show up on any power scans or cerebro, except as a flat line." Hence the term 'flatscan'.

"We'll do everything we can, Mister Keller, but believe me, we 'flatscans' are capable of things that might surprise you. In the meanwhile, consider this an opportunity to develop skills that don't require the powers you have," he replied, setting one hand on Julian's shoulder.

"Still, I'll have the entire Engineering staff focus on it, if necessary. I have a feeling we're going to need everyone and their powers soon enough."

At this point, about the only thing a flatscan could do that would surprise him would be to actually be a decent and understanding human being. Which, so far, Picard was. So that was a point for him.

"Yeah, sure, I can learn to crochet," he responded is a slight deadpan tone. "But I get what you're saying." It's not like the X-Men didn't things like math, science, engineering, and non-powered combat along with power training.

"And...um... thanks."

"Don't mention it. I think you'll find this crew to be quite accepting, Mister Keller. Regardless of the current circumstances, or who or what you are or where you're from, you're among friends now. Remember that, Mister Keller." Saying that, and patting Julian's shoulder once more, the captain turned around and walked off, mixing into the crowd of people to answer more questions and greet more new arrivals.
