Meet-n-Greet

After being released from stasis, having the slime removed from their bodies and clothed in the creepy, pulsing leaf-suit that everyone wore, and being taken to the Weapons & Possessions lockers to collect their belongings, the new arrivals would find themselves standing in the Observation Deck. Round windows lined the fleshy walls, revealing the bright display of lights that was inter-dimensional travel. They would also discover that there were people--members of the command staff and crew that had woken earlier--waiting for them.

Angela looked at the wooden case, then back at the girl. "It's from the Dwarves," she said vaguely, moving a hand around in circles, as if they were somewhere nearby. "I have it folded up right now; easier to carry. And you?" She pointed to the wooden stick. "Does that store magic? It has that look about it." She didn't mention her own talent, thinking of the ignorant masses that hunted down or shunned those with power.

"Dwarves," Luna murmurs, looking intrigued. "What's a dwarve?" She knows quite a bit about gnomes ('gernumblies', as she calls them), but dwarves are not something she is at all familiar with.

A hand drifts to the wand behind her ear, and she nods vaguely. "It doesn't store magic so much as channel it."

[identity profile] eld-vrangr.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, dwarves are the worst people ever to have a grudge held against. They live for centuries - and can't let go of the past. Really, impossible to deal with over long periods." She grinned, thinking of the group she had won her weapon off of ages ago. Naturally, they were still fuming.

Paying more attention to the stick, "Channel magic? Hmm. What an idea...It - enhances?" Her fingers itched for a try.

[identity profile] isee-snorkacks.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Luna nods vaguely. "I see. They sound like angry people." Here, Angela, have a Point of the Obvious.

"Not enhance - channel. The wand doesn't do much to the magic, it's just a medium that allows us to use what we already have. Most people can't use them, but wizards and witches have bonds with their wands which allow them to do extraordinary things."

[identity profile] eld-vrangr.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
"Yes. Angry." Grin in acknowledgment. She was fun, if on the odd side.

"Ahh." Like the Ancient Language - a focus to prevent magic gone awry. "I think I understand. Witches and wizards. So you would be a witch. Where I come from, witches use potions and spirits in their magic. No need for wands unless you were a "magician", someone who had magic inside herself," Angela said, rather proudly. She had a century of spells written in her journal.

[identity profile] isee-snorkacks.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Luna considers this, looking thoughtful. "Your magicians sound like wizards in my world. We're born with our magic inside us, but any use of it until our eleventh birthday is accidental; the wands are both enablers and control mechanisms."

[identity profile] eld-vrangr.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
How confusing. It made some vague kind of sense, though. "Yes, a way to control magic is good. We have verbal language." She could go on all day about magic, but she really wanted to actually try the wand. Her eye wandered back to it. A direct approach? "Would...that wand work with me, or is it attuned to your power?"

[identity profile] isee-snorkacks.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
"I see," she murmurs, staring at Angela for a moment. "You're older than you look, aren't you?" Her own protuberant blue eyes are locked with the woman's dark ones, and she can see a depth that she's only found in one other set of eyes; eyes that belong to Albus Dumbledore.

The idea rather fascinates Luna, though she hesitates a bit on sliding the wand from behind her ear. Red sparks shoot from the end as her fingers slip on grasping it, and she 'hmm's quietly. "I've never thought about using a wand with different forms of magic. It might not be a very good reaction..." And, after all, it doesn't look like she'll have access to Mr. Ollivander and his wand shop anytime soon, so she's quite wary of experimenting with something she is so completely unsure about.

"Ahh." Angela put a finger against her own lips in a shushing gesture, once more amused by the slip of a girl in front of her. "Another time, maybe? Somewhere more comfortable." And private, hopefully. She liked blending, and public knowledge of her considerable age most likely wouldn't help.

A sigh, and she twitched a shoulder. "I suppose it's safer not to attempt. I'm tired anyway. Did they say anything about food?"

[identity profile] isee-snorkacks.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Luna blinks, head tilting like a curious puppy. "Alright," she murmurs, staring intently at Angela, blue eyes shining in a way that makes evident her deep curiosity. A strange person herself, she senses the unorthodoxy of the woman before her, and her interest is more piqued than when Hermione called that interest meeting in the Hog's Head for Dumbledore's Army.

She thinks for a minute, trying to remember if she has heard anything about food as of yet. "I think I heard someone warning another newcomer about the food's relative inedibility..."

[identity profile] eld-vrangr.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
She nodded, thankful.

"Inedibility? How sad...I was hoping for something refreshing." Perhaps there was some kind of black market on ship where she could get her own food store. Angela made a mental note to explore later.

[identity profile] isee-snorkacks.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"I would conjure you some food, but that's the first of the five Principal Exceptions to Gamp's Law of Elemental Transfiguration," she says informatively. "You can't conjure good; you can summon it, transfigure it, or increase its quantity, but making it is impossible."

[identity profile] eld-vrangr.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"Ah...Well, thanks anyway." She thought for a second. "But if told you there was a bag of vegetables in the room next door, you could conjure it? What about if I said there was food somewhere nearby, but didn't give a specific location?"

[identity profile] isee-snorkacks.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Luna blinks slowly, staring at her wand. "I could summon, it yes, and I don't need an exact location, though it does help. If we had a larger space, though, it wouldn't work. If I was in my house and I knew a bag of potatoes was somewhere in the world, if I said 'accio', it wouldn't work. One needs to have an exact target."

[identity profile] eld-vrangr.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"You found me out." She smiled ruefully. "Its probably easier to deal with the food here, then. Can't know till you try it, anyway."

[identity profile] isee-snorkacks.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Luna stares at the woman, mouth partially open. It occurs to her that she doesn't know the mysterious lady's name, and she realizes that this could be a problem in future. "I'm Luna," she says, seemingly without prompt, her tone just as dreamy and detached as always despite the typical feeling of warmth involved in introduction.

[identity profile] eld-vrangr.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
With slight surprise, she answered, "Angela. Good to meet you." She meant it, both personally and as a reference for future use. Luna looked like the type to have interesting information, and she seemed agreeable enough. The herbalist stored her name away among others.

[identity profile] isee-snorkacks.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
A pause, a smile. "Angela. One of the Seekers on the Gryffindor Quidditch team is named Angela." Her thoughts drift in that general direction for a moment before she blinks and comes back to the present. "I heard something about rooms where you can imagine your surroundings to be however you want. I'm thinking of paying of them a visit. Would you mind? You could come, if you like."

[identity profile] eld-vrangr.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Her stomach began complaining as Luna zoned out. "An illusion? Sounds intriguing, but maybe later. I might search out some of that inedible food. Can't remember the last time I ate." She picked up her weapon case. "How about we wander around together until we find one or the other?"

[identity profile] isee-snorkacks.livejournal.com 2009-08-04 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
"Sounds lovely," she replies, offering Angela an only-mildly-distracted smile. Having already picked the hallway she wanted to try before stopping to talk to Angela, Luna turns and heads towards one of the doors, her pace just as slow and dreamy as everything else about her. Her eyes seem to be glued to the ceiling.
