Meet-n-Greet
After being released from stasis, having the slime removed from their bodies and clothed in the creepy, pulsing leaf-suit that everyone wore, and being taken to the Weapons & Possessions lockers to collect their belongings, the new arrivals would find themselves standing in the Observation Deck. Round windows lined the fleshy walls, revealing the bright display of lights that was inter-dimensional travel. They would also discover that there were people--members of the command staff and crew that had woken earlier--waiting for them.

Catching sight of Luna's wand, she indicates it curiously.
"What's that?" It looks something like a chopstick, but it's much too large and finely shaped to be an eating utensil.

At River's gesture, Luna retrieves the long strip of wood, clasping it loosely in her fingers. "It's a wand." The reply is simple, concise, and relatively informative considering its light tone and mere three words.

"I am? Thank you." Her appearance is something she hasn't put a lot of thought into for a very long time. It's mildly disorienting to have it brought to her attention.
"You're very pretty too. Your hair is barely pigmented." It's a very odd compliment, but clearly meant to be a compliment.
Luna's explanation of the wand may be short, but River only knows of one kind of wand. A fictional kind, yes, but that hardly matters here.
"For magic?"

However, she most definitely is not expecting a reciprocation of the compliment, and her eyes widen. "You really think so? Daddy always says... but everyone else... No one's ever told me that before," she says, brain flickering through a series of thoughts in quick succession. "Thank you," she adds, looking startled. To her own surprise, her cheeks feel a bit warm. The distraction provided by her wand is warmly welcomed.
"For magic," she says, nodding, her grip tightening on the wand slightly as she flicks it and causes a small flock of canaries to erupt from the end of the wand. They chirrup and flutter around her head happily.

River gasps at Luna's display of magic before grinning broadly. She giggles delightedly as the birds flutter around their creator.
"What kinds of things can you do?" River isn't entirely sure yet whether the magic is real or a trick, like the kinds of magic people do back home in shows, but she likes it either way.

River's glee at seeing the conjured birds cheers her up significantly though, and with a little wave of her wand, she sends them over to circle the other girl's dark head.
"I can... I can make water, unlock doors, make things float, stun people, protect myself, and ward off things like Dementors." At the last example she cants her head slightly, thinking of the half-finished mural of her friends on her bedroom ceiling. A flick, a chant of 'Expecto Patronum', and a silver hare jumps from the end of her wand, falling to the floor and hopping a few feet in either direction before sitting for a moment and vanishing. "One uses those to ward off the guards of Azkaban prison. They're tall awful things that live on human misery, so you have to think a happy thought and conjure a Patronus to make them go away."
