Meet and Greet

The rest of the crew assembled on the Observation Deck to meet the latest editions to their numbers.

Several people are set up near the doors to provide the new people with omnicomms and comm rings. They are also told they must read information about their current situation and a survival guide with their new omnicomm. New crewmates might see a tall dragonish guy with wings (but don't call him that), a large afro attached to a smaller girl, and talking ponies among their number. There are also several authoritative-looking figures ready to introduce themselves.

There's a lot to tell the new people. It's going to be a lot to take in. But thankfully this time, there's a system that was set up to aid the new crew members with a few more experienced ones.

[ooc: Only new characters and Command Staff can start new threads for introductions, to limit the number of threads. Everyone else, just tag in and have your guys greet the newbies. Big brother/sister, there will be a thread for you as well!]

pffffft

Sabriel's lips press together as she turns this idea over. She's woefully unprepared for war, despite her Fighting Arts training and experiences against Kerrigor. Those were smaller armies, never more than thirty or forty men in the largest and climactic battle at the end. Looking out over the crew she counts maybe two or three hundred.

The fighting spirit in her dims a bit. This will be more trying than she thought.

"Alright." She sets her face back into an expression of resolve, then thrusts the omnicomm at Morgan. "So what in the Charter is this?"

He'd suspected as much when he saw her weapons and clothing of choice, but who can tell? He wore a coat and a sword too, and he knew technology.

"That device is called an omnicomm. Basically, it does two things -- it's like a library stored in one device, and it's a way to communicate with people, like mail or messenger but much faster and without needing things like paper or someone to carry a message."

Sabriel's face does a poor job of hiding her opinion: that's dumb.

"This sort of device could not possibly exist. It has no hint of magic on it, as far as I can tell. What's its real purpose?"

She thinks you're trolling her, Morgan. She does not approve.
morganknight: (nervous?)

"Cross my heart," he said, doing just that. "I have no reason to lie, and even if I did, I'm not so cruel as to pull a stunt like that on you in these circumstances. It's a device of science. It works on physical laws rather than magical ones. I can show you if you'd like."

"Please do. I'm having trouble believing in such a thing. I suppose we had telegrams in Ancelstierre, but they were much more unwieldy than this and certainly didn't contain entire libraries."

Sabriel still is giving Morgan massive unsure face.

Obligingly, he produced his own from one of his coat's pockets, stepping to her side so she could watch his motions.

"The first thing you should do, before anything, is read the introduction they've prepared for newly-awoken people," he said, demonstrating how to do that with slow, patient gestures so she could follow more easily.

Sabriel reads it over, not seeming all that impressed with it. She's more impressed with words appearing right on the device, as if lifted by a Charter, but she still cannot sense any Charter or Free Magic on these people.

"Alright. These seem simple enough instructions. And then...I hate to ask this, but what should I do next?"
morganknight: (oh really?)

[personal profile] morganknight 2012-04-05 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
He gave her a sidelong look for a moment, wondering if she'd truly absorbed what she'd read...

"We're not in any immediate danger now, so you have time to adjust to... everything. What I'd advise is meeting people and getting accustomed to this ship now. You're stuck with us till we win this fight, so best if you can make some friends," he said with a smile.

"Friends like yourself, are you saying?" Certainly Sabriel would be hesitant to form any close relationships with another young man, platonic or not, for fear of being seen as unseemly. The people of Belisaere taught her that. But Morgan has been very polite to her thus far, and the favor must be returned.

"Well, that's up to you," he said, smile turning playful, "though I am offering."

[personal profile] ringoutyourdead 2012-04-05 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
Sabriel considers this, hands folded demurely in front of her sword. "I think it's a good thing to have friends in the midst of war. I may have to take you up on that offer."
morganknight: (hee!)

[personal profile] morganknight 2012-04-05 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
"Now we're talking!" he said, though he couldn't help but check out that sword when her hands called attention to it. Just a quick glance and a quick appraisal from someone familiar with weapons.

"By the way you were talking about magic, I'm guessing you know a thing or two about it?"
ringoutyourdead: (Happy - Smug)

[personal profile] ringoutyourdead 2012-04-05 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm a necromancer on my world. Of sorts. The opposite of a necromancer, really." She motions to her bells in the bandolier. "And a competent Charter mage. I haven't sense my type of magic on anyone else here, but I presume that you must be familiar with magic as well."
morganknight: (seriously?)

[personal profile] morganknight 2012-04-05 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
"A Euthanatos?" Morgan stared at her for half a second before waving his hand. "Never mind, that's got to be a term you don't know. Sorry."

Still, there was no denying that he needed a moment's pause. If she was anything close to a Euthanatos, well, his respect for her had just gone up a great deal. "There are a dozen if not a hundred different types of magic on this ship. Mine's done through martial arts."

"Like I said, the term for my office is Abhorsen on my world. Gatekeeper to the Dead." Which feels more to her like a child wearing her parents' oversized clothing than a truth of the matter. Which, in this case, is somewhat true - the bell bandolier is slightly large on her and the belt her sword is sheathed to is clipped to the tightest notch.

"Music for my own capabilities. I'm terrible at the whistling marks, though." She gives a self-deprecating smile, but it's barely hiding her wonder and excitement at hearing that there are hundreds of different kinds of magic. It's overwhelming, really. She always only knew Charter and Free Magic, believing they were the only kinds. "Yours must be quite visually impressive."
morganknight: (grin)

[personal profile] morganknight 2012-04-05 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
He shrugged to that. "Oh, it's all in what I'm doing, not how I'm doing it. Though I'll take that as a compliment nonetheless," he said, smiling waxing playful. Vanity was a little flaw of his... and flirtation a trait.

"I will say I'm not sure how much you'll specifically find to do here," he continued more seriously. "We don't have much in the way of restless ghosts, or, luckily, many deaths at all."
ringoutyourdead: (Basic - Charter Magic)

[personal profile] ringoutyourdead 2012-04-05 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Sabriel blushes a bit. Her nature is not flirtatious, but she recognizes it when she sees it.

"I can tell that that hasn't been the case in the past. I can sense that many people died here, on this ship. Some of their spirits might still need to be laid to rest, or at least identified and consoled. And other than that...well, I was a student before I came here. It seems my learning has just begun."
morganknight: (ladies)

[personal profile] morganknight 2012-04-05 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Titled mage white-necromancers blush? Morgan had to approve.

"I defer to your expertise. You're right about the past, and if you can find anything that needs to be done I'm certain you'll have the support necessary to do something about it."
ringoutyourdead: (Happy - Smug)

[personal profile] ringoutyourdead 2012-04-06 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
"Excellent. Thank you for your guidance, Mr. Knight." She presses her hands together and does a quick, respectful little bend of her head. "I should be familiarizing myself with the rest of the ship."
morganknight: (looking at you)

[personal profile] morganknight 2012-04-06 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
"There's a map and information about the ship in the omnicomm, if you want to look. Not that I mind exploring for its own sake, but this ship is actually the size of a small country. No joke. Exploring it is pretty safe, but if you ever need anything, I'm easy enough to get ahold of," he said, with a smile that -- this time -- wasn't flirting, just earnest. The ship was a hard life to accustom to, and everyone could use a little help. He was glad to provide where he could.

[personal profile] ringoutyourdead 2012-04-07 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
"That is..." Sabriel's eyes glaze just a little as she tries to picture it and can't. Even the most massive ships in her time aren't the size of a small town. "I would say impossible, but the word has been devalued by now, hasn't it?"

morganknight: (tickled)

[personal profile] morganknight 2012-04-07 03:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, well, he had to like that she retained that much metacognition. "Nothing's impossible. Just increasingly improbable! And this all is pretty improbable, but no less real for that."
