Winter Shore Leave: Pelau
||Attention, Attention. All personnel please report to the Observation Deck. Attention, Attention. All personnel please report to the Observation Deck. Attention, Attention, all personnel...||
Stacy's voiced called the entire crew, until all of them were gathered at the Obs Deck. Then, a dossier appeared on the screens, along with the image of a rotating planet.
Planet Designation: Pelau
Status: Terrestrial, H-class.
Non-sentient life: Moderate flora and fauna.
Semi-Sentient Life: Yes.
Sentient Life: Yes
Water: 75% of the planet's surface.
Climate: Climate varies by region.
Landscape: Landscape at the North Pole varies. Within the biodomes, significant development. Outside the domes remains mostly pristine.
Air: Normoxic concentration: 29% oxygen, 60% nitrogen, 3% xenon, 6% trace gases, such as hydrogen, krypton, and argon.
Air Pressure: 14.352 pounds per square inch.
Sky: Blue/violet with white clouds.
Sun: A class D4K, yellow star.
Warnings: Be careful of frostbite outside the biodomes.
Mission: None. Shore leave is now initiated.
[Here's a handy map of the North Biodome where the crew is being dropped]

Summary of major areas in the biodome:
Glacier Islands: An undeveloped area where the more adventurous tourists can go out via boat and see the wildlife. Or get chased by bears.
Icefish Pier: A pleasant little pier with plenty of casting-off spots for those who want to try a little fishing. In fact, there's a fishing contest on, with a prize for the participant who can catch the largest fish! The crew can charter rides here out to the Glacier Islands.
Icicle Mountains: Home of several ski lodges and hundreds of slopes. The most beloved of these is the Reindeer Lodge, which has recently run into some financial trouble. But it's still open for business. For those less sporting-inclined, there are open-air or closed hot springs and day spa getaways.
Icicle Shopping District: Tacky sweaters? Souvenirs? Groceries? Snowsuits and gear? It's all here! Home of the immense Icicle Shopping Mall, which has a giant snow-covered evergreen growing up in front.
Pelau Historical District: Unlike the newer constructions of the rest of the dome, the Historical District has more small houses, museums, art galleries, etc.
Jewel Lake: The largest outdoor ice-skating rink in the dome!
Pelau Entertainment District: Plays, dance performances, clubs, cinema, casinos, and more. If it lights up at night, it's here.
Glass Desert: A large undeveloped area well outside the domes, the Glass Desert is an icy, snowy landscape that more hardcore visitors can travel to to get some solitude. Also, to see the aurora borealis.
[Feel free to make up your own locations, private posts, whatever. VACATION ON]

MANRY BONDING TRIP
With a grunt, he hauled the boat higher up the beach and away from the tide line, then looked at Zuko with a grin.
"Stop being so grumpy. This'll be fun! Besides, we're only here for one night." He stoops to pull some of his gear from the boat.
"Let's find a good place to set up camp, then we can catch some dinner."

FISHING!
And this is probably the most relaxed any of you will have seen Dr. Beckett since emerging from the pods, as he casts off, before taking a seat on the stool.
"Aah, this is the life."

Open to all!
What sparked this sudden enthusiasm was anyone's guess - the nostalgic chill in the air and memories of her homeland or the excitement of a fishing competition just gone to her head.

INNOCENTLY CHILLING BY THE WATER
The lake, being unfrozen, is one of the few of the local vistas with the least snow. Having slipped like fifty times over the past day (dammit he's made of metal he gets no traction), Uva is not very pleased with snow as a concept.
He'll just be chilling on a bank by the water away from all the fishers and their lines.
Unfortunately, one of the long antenna things coming from his shoulders has dipped into the water, and it is apparently extremely appetizing looking to the local aquatic life.
..he'll just be over here trying to get his antenna back out of the jaws of a very persistent fish.

But this time, Ash had something that was sure to help him win. Namely, Misty's special lure, something she'd sent to him ages ago. Ash cast the line into the water, and with Pikachu and Oshawott next to him as insurance, sat patiently.

ICICLE MOUNTAINS/REINDEER LODGE
no subject
Yeah, okay, most of you know about the sport, that's fine. Still, slicing down the hill, Rainbow Dash put on a spectacle that was no less than she'd demand of herself. As it turns out, snowboarding is easier, more stylish, and more fun when you've got wings.
So she flipped over a hill, turned three somersaults in neat succession in midair, then landed lightly at the end of the course.
"Oh yeah, I've still got the touch!"

Save the Ski Lodge (miniplot)
The air was filled with joy and merriment! For everyone, that is, except the owners of the beloved Reindeer Lodge. They were in deep with their creditors, and rumor had it that an unscrupulous business tycoon was out to buy up their little resort.
But the slopes were still well-attended, and at the lodge's main building, there were plenty of people milling around, skiing, snowboarding, tobagganing, and devouring the lodge's famous food and hot cocoa. BUT WAS THERE TROUBLE BREWING ON THE HORIZON?
(protip: there was)

Knock a Greeed down a hill!
Even still, he seemed pretty amused by watching his ankles disappear in to the snow with a crunch. There was something simple about being able to wipe away some of the white that easily that the cat Greeed was pretty distracted by it.
Snow smash! Hahaha, your frozen water cannot stand up to the might of Cazali the Greeed!!!!!!!...and was standing at the top of a snowbank, practically asking to be knocked down the embankment.

Hot cocoa and lodge-lounging
On the other hand, it was nice to be able to actually enjoy the scenery without a bunch of nervous super mutants side-eying you and hoping you didn't look at them. Veronica's relaxed on a couch near a window, watching the skiers and snowboarders from the warmth of the lodge. Rex is nearby on the floor, dozing. Veronica's nursing a thing of hot chocolate as well - it helps with keeping warm, and oh god it was amazing.

PELAU HISTORICAL DISTRICT

Hiding was never all that effective.
With that in consideration and the mind-melting headaches she'd had to deal with during the last attacks anyways, she ventured out into the historical district. She'd had met plenty of aliens during her stay on the D10, but she rarely was able to find out more about their culture. This would be a good start. Even still, she was noticeably antsy and her eyebrows were furrowed in discontent.

JEWEL LAKE
Re: JEWEL LAKE
Roger hasn't seen proper snow in close to twenty years now, or serious ice. For a boy who grew up in Wisconsin this is seriously unacceptable and being rectified right this instant.
Good thing the rink had hockey skates available for rental. He's going out onto the ice to reacquaint himself with something he hasn't done for far, far too long. Probably by falling down a lot, but ask him if he cares.

Did someone say Plays?
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile
This day shall gentle his condition:
And gentlemen in England, now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day."
Goliath is staring intently at a production of Henry V.
Those accompanying him might take heart knowing the play is almost over.

WINTER CARNIVAL
'Pelau Winter Carnival: A Whirlwind of Fun!'
Within its icy walls, visitors would see elaborate ice sculptures on display, a looming ferris wheel, the snowball-coaster, shovel swings, a wintry merry go round, and more! The usual midway games made a suspicious amount of money for the entire tourist trap, with their icepick whacking contests, snowball targeting games, and more. Giant stuffed snowmen were the standard prize.
And it wouldn't be a carnival without carnival food! Hot cocoa in all flavors, coffee, tea, gingerbread cookies, chocolate chip cookies, warm muffins, and candy canes were the standard fare. Also of note was the Soup Shop, selling all flavors of soup. Evergreen Stew was the most popular item on the menu, featuring roasted greens and hearty meats.
(feel free to use these rides, games, and foods or make up your own!)
FOR CEDRIC
But snow and a theme park?
It's almost a little too much to take in at once. Howard stands on the little winter trolly that took him here, shivering, gazing at the snow with wonder and hovering his foot over it as if afraid to actually touch it. The trolly-man seems torn between telling him to move it already and finding it kind of cute to see someone experience snow for the first time.
That said, at some point Howard's going to have to either invest in the hot chocolate or find a Pelau sweater in the carnival or he'll freeze.
