Meat n' Greet

The rest of the crew assembled on the Observation Deck to meet the latest editions to their numbers. After the revelation that their worlds are gone, many of them are even more eager to see people they knew from home.

Several people are set up near the doors to provide the new people with omnicoms and comm rings. They are also told they must read information about their current situation and a survival guide with their new omnicom. New crew-mates might see a tall dragonish guy with wings (but don't call him that) and purple girl among their number. There are also several authoritative-looking figures ready to introduce themselves.

There's a lot to tell the new people. It's going to be a lot to take in.

[ooc: Only new characters and Command Staff can start new threads for introductions, to limit the number of threads. Everyone else, just tag in and have your guys greet the newbies.]

"Oh, yes, perfectly fine," Sandry replied, tugging at the sleeve of her plantsuit. "Just a bit excited, I think. I woke the last time we had one of these, so it's terribly interesting to see it from the other side." Content with her sleeve, Sandry looked up at Alanna. Purple eyes... She had seen them recently, had been working very closely with them.

"Do forgive me, but. You wouldn't happen to know one Master Thom of Trebond, would you?"

[[ OoC: Totally okay, no worries. I'm up for continuing, so long as you are XD Backthreading is my best friend. ]]

"Well, I'm glad that you're well," Alanna said with a grin. All the while though, she inspected the woman curiously, trying to see if there was anything that she could piece together from the stranger's appearance. It wasn't wise to rely too much on physical appearance when it came to assessing others, but there were things that could be learned from looking at a person's stance and the way they presented themselves to others. "Is it different seeing it from the other side? Goddess, it's certainly confusing enough on my end!"

Alanna jerked in surprise to hear this stranger mention her brother's name like that. The violet eyes that were of such interest to Sandry widened and then narrowed as the Lioness's thoughts raced. How did this girl know her brother? The newcomer spoke of him with enough formality that it seemed unlikely that they were friends, although she wouldn't write off the possibility. But she also heard nothing in the young woman's tone that set off warning bells and she saw no reason not to be honest. It wasn't a secret, after all. "Thom is my brother," she answered cautiously, watching the young woman carefully. "And you are?"

If the way Sandry had smoothed herself over after the collision wasn't an indicator of her nobility, the way she straightened up when she finally turned to face Alanna probably said enough. "It is, very. The entire thing is announced through the ship, and even with everyone gathered here it's easy to tell who is new to the process. I can hardly imagine how silly and bewildered I must have looked. Luckily, my sister had already been awake for some time, and I was able to find her almost immediately."

A grin crossed her face as Alanna confirmed her suspicions. "Yes, I thought he might be. You're very similar," Sandry replied, before giving Alanna a small but proper curtsy. "Lady Sandrilene fa Toren, though you might only here Master Thom refer to me as such. Most here call me Sandry." She paused, then added with a small, entertained smile, "I have had the ah, unique pleasure of meeting with your brother."

Born to that class herself, Alanna was perfectly capable of recognizing the signs in others. This woman moved with the self-confidence that most nobles picked up quickly as they aged. But the woman's eyes were kind and friendly, showing none of the arrogance that all too often came with that status and that was encouraging.

The Lioness smiled. "I suppose I'll just have to wait for the next one to experience that myself. I'm glad to hear that you were able to reunite with your sister so easily. It... softens the blow some. Having a loved one near you." Her heart went out to all those who'd woken up alone. To learn all this and have no one you cared for around... it would be unbearable. "May I ask your sister's name? I'll keep an eye out for her."

Alanna chuckled at Sandry's comment about her and Thom being similar. It certainly wasn't the first time she'd heard such a thing. "You should have seen us when we were children. It could be hard to tell us apart." Then she looked Sandry up and down again. That she seemed so willing to forgo the title was another sign that this woman differed from many of the nobles that she'd known. "Which would you preferred to be called? I'll use whichever you prefer."

"Unique pleasure?" Alanna repeated softly, with a raised brow. "That doesn't sound promising. May I ask what happened?"

(OOC: A fact I know all too well these days. We'll finish this thread... sometime next year then. :P)

A glimmer of amusement crossed Sandry's face. "Daja Kisubo is her name, though I should warn you that we are foster-siblings. That fact seems to throw many people off at first. She is as close as blood, though, as are our other sister and brother." They had been through so much together that it was difficult, if not impossible, to think of them as anything but kin.

The idea of Thom as a child was a fairly entertaining thought. Sandry could only guess at what sort of child he must have been, and the few guesses she had fit him remarkably well. Alanna seemed to have a much better head on her shoulders, at least.

"I would much prefer Sandry," she smiled. "It's terribly hard to relate to people when they spend their days wondering at the proper titles to give you, and 'Sandry' is much friendlier than tripping over Sandrilene, besides." She would use the latter when necessary, but luckily life on Stacy didn't call for rank very often--or ever. Sandry almost preferred it this way: no bows, no worries over getting out of her way.

She nodded, debating the best way to word her encounters with Thom. "We have worked together on researching some of the magic on the ship." She didn't have to say it was Thom's magic they were working on, and she wouldn't unless Thom gave her permission to do so. Sister or not, it was still his own private business, and that made it his place to inform his sister.

[identity profile] lionesschampion.livejournal.com 2011-11-17 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Alanna's eyes lit in recognition at the name. "The smith mage? I met her earlier." And now that she thought about it, Daja had mentioned having a sister here. She'd forgotten the sister's name, but this must be her.

She hardly needed to be told that there was more to a family then blood. Myles was far more her father then the one whose blood she'd shared. It had been Myles who had taught her, encouraged, and who had simply shown her that he cared. Lord Alan of Trebond had done nothing of the sort. She said none of that though and instead simply nodded understandingly.

The knight visibly relaxed a bit more. Sandry's outgoing, friendly nature had almost been enough to put Alanna at ease on its own, especially now that she was no longer jumping at every shadow as she had when she first woke up, but hearing Daja's name finished the job. Daja had been kind and helpful when Alanna had been lost and confused, even when the knight had lost her temper with the mage. It was hard to think ill of either of them.

The Lioness chuckled softly, nodding agreeably. She could definitely see herself liking Sandry. "I agree entirely, Sandry. Titles are often more trouble then they're worth, although they have their uses." Alanna had a number of them herself and she'd make use of them as necessary, but she preferred her name among friends. "Still, I don't see any reason for any unnecessary formality here."

Alanna's eyes turned curious. That was an interesting statement. Her brother liked to study magic, so that he might have been doing precisely that was no surprise, but he didn't usually do it in the company of other mages unless he felt it absolutely necessary. It was certainly possible that he'd changed while here, but he still seemed to be holding himself apart for the most part, at least as far as she could tell. What had they been studying? Thom had told her that he'd been talking with other mages about his magic issues, but he'd never specified who had talked to about it.

Her face now took on a guarded look. It was too big a jump to assume that he could have been talking about Sandry based on just what she'd heard so far. Still, it wouldn't hurt to question further. Toying with the stone around her neck, she asked cautiously, "May I ask what magic you two were studying? Did it have something to do with one of you or was it just generally for the ship?"

[identity profile] magic-weaver.livejournal.com 2011-11-20 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
That was a small relief. Sandry was glad for Alanna's acceptance. Not that she had expected anything less--Alanna seemed to have a far better head on her shoulders than her brother--but it was always nice to have good suspicions confirmed.

It was nice to see the woman relax after that point. If Sandry couldn't reassure someone, Daja was almost always sure to finish the job. A wonderful and handy little system of tag-teaming, and they hadn't even planned it.

"They are rarely useful here," she assured Alanna. "Most don't know the ranking system of other worlds, and it's probably just as well. More often than not, they focus on seniority and usefulness, which I find to be the most effective system in this particular environment." Those who knew what was happening and how to battle it were definitely better off in charge than some of the people who claimed rank over them.

Sandry paused, biting her lower lip as she debated a decent answer to Alanna's question. "It was to do with one of us," she replied slowly, "though I'm afraid I do not feel...quite at liberty enough with it to say." It wasn't her place to say, and in the long run was something Thom needed to discuss with his sister, not Sandry.

[identity profile] lionesschampion.livejournal.com 2011-11-22 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Alanna nodded, grateful for the information. It gave her a better picture of the society that she'd become a part of rather suddenly. "I approve," she commented with a smile. "Titles might have their uses depending on the norms of that society, but unfortunately those with power and authority gifted to them by birth are often not those best suited to it and, in a war of any sort, it's particularly vital that those in charge be competent and experienced."

Violet eyes focused intently on Sandry's face as the knight listened carefully, noting how uncomfortable her companion seemed at this line of questioning. It was possible that Sandry was uncomfortable on her own behalf, but the line about being "at liberty" to discuss it suggested otherwise. "This have to do with my brother then?" Alanna was tired of this game. She'd never liked them anyway. "Please don't keep things from me. If you know something of my brother's magic problems, then it's important that you tell me."

[identity profile] magic-weaver.livejournal.com 2011-11-27 07:57 am (UTC)(link)
There was no disagreeing with Alanna. Sandry knew all too well that those who had the power often abused it, or left it neglected. Many nobles did not realize how much others depended on them, or the work that needed to go in to caring for those people as they were supposed to. "And we do have an almost perfect group leading at this point, so we've been blessed enough with those who know what they're doing. Even if the setting is different than what they were used to before."

The look in the other woman's eyes didn't help Sandry's own comfort much, and the mage spent a few awful moments tugging at the hem of her sleeve before looking back to Alanna. "It does..." But how to say without completely outing Thom? At least Alanna seemed to know of the issue. More than likely it would be fine, as long as Alanna didn't mention the conversation to Thom later. "I created a map of his magic for him, so that he might better track the progress of his cleansing. The cleansing itself is being done with the help of another."

[identity profile] lionesschampion.livejournal.com 2011-11-29 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
It was comforting to hear. Discovering that she might be able to place her faith in those who commanded was always a help, although she wasn't quite ready to throw herself too wholeheartedly behind these leaders until she was able to either meet them herself or at least see them in action. "That will certainly be a help. A war, especially one of this magnitude, is no time to deal with incompetent leaders."

"A map of his magic? How?" Sandry had Alanna's full attention now. "Who is performing this cleansing anyway and for how long has this been going on? Thom still looks ill. Are you sure that this cleansing process is working?" Her worry for her brother could be clearly heard in her voice.

[identity profile] magic-weaver.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 10:17 am (UTC)(link)
"A fact that some of the leaders in my home world might have done well to note." It was a wise choice on Alanna's part. The leaders were, in most cases, competent enough to carry out the roles assigned to them, but there were still those on the ship who opposed those in charge, and it was occasionally cause for excitement.

For as comfortable as Sandry was with her magic, it was difficult for her to discuss the magic of another in this manner, even when discussing it with the sibling of that other. "Using my own magic," she began, with a quickly added, "though I've been careful not to take on any of his magic that I couldn't keep complete track of. I am an ambient mage, which means I have an object of focus to my magic. My particular focus is in thread. Using thread that had been exposed to his magic I was able to weave a map of it." She hoped that explanation would be enough for Alanna, at least for the time being. There would be plenty of time later to betray Thom's trust. "I don't know exactly who is aiding him in the cleansing, but it has been going for some time, and it seems to be working. Time will tell." It was hard to say, and probably harder to hear, but it was true. They needed to wait and see.

[identity profile] lionesschampion.livejournal.com 2011-12-17 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
Sandry seemed to have a good head on her shoulders, even if she was being rather frustratingly vague when in came to Thom's condition. The memory of Thom's fate haunted Alanna and she couldn't just let things go on the way that they were. Even without further interference from Roger, it was clear that her brother was still struggling and that was enough of a reason for the knight to continue to pursue the issue. Her twin's heath was at the forefront of her thoughts and was at the top of her priority list.

"I'd like to see this map as soon as possible," she said finally as she considered Sandry's answer. Thread magic? Maude had taught her a little thread magic when she'd been younger and now she wished that she hadn't been so frightened at the concept of learning to control her Gift, so that she might have a better grasp on all this. Still, from the way Sandry described her magic, Alanna suspected that what she knew as "thread magic" was not the same as Sandry's. She'd never heard of a mage using thread in the manner that the young noblewoman had described. "There... there must be something more that can be done for my brother's sake. 'Seems to be working' is not a good enough response for something as important as Thom's heath, especially when you say that it's been going on for a while and he still looks as ill as he does!"

She paused to take deep breath and then shifted her gaze to meet Sandry's eyes, attempting to appeal to the other woman in a different way. A part of her still suspected that something was being kept for her. Thom had been very unwilling to speak of his condition and Sandry's answers seemed to be awfully vague, only adding details when pressed for them. "Sandry, if there is anything that you are keeping from me... anything that you know that might help Thom then please tell me. There is nothing that I would not do to help my brother, just as I suspect that there is nothing that you would not do to help your sister. Please... put yourself in my shoes. If your sister was ill, wouldn't you want to know all that you could so that you could help her? All I want is to help Thom, but I need to know all I can before I can do so in the most effective manner."
