Meat n' Greet

The rest of the crew assembled on the Observation Deck to meet the latest editions to their numbers. After the revelation that their worlds are gone, many of them are even more eager to see people they knew from home.

Several people are set up near the doors to provide the new people with omnicoms and comm rings. They are also told they must read information about their current situation and a survival guide with their new omnicom. New crew-mates might see a tall dragonish guy with wings (but don't call him that) and purple girl among their number. There are also several authoritative-looking figures ready to introduce themselves.

There's a lot to tell the new people. It's going to be a lot to take in.

[ooc: Only new characters and Command Staff can start new threads for introductions, to limit the number of threads. Everyone else, just tag in and have your guys greet the newbies.]

"You were lucky," Elisa noted, eyeing the sword and shield with interest. It wasn't her sort of thing, but it was impressive. Particularly since the woman carrying them looked like she knew how to use her equipment. "All I found waiting for me was a jacket."

She wasn't particularly fond of guns - that happened when you got shot - but they were useful. Right now, on board a impossible alien space ship, she would have been grateful for something as real as a pistol.

[identity profile] lionesschampion.livejournal.com 2011-10-03 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
"At least it's a fine one," Alanna told her, eying the coat the woman wore. It was a nice one even if it didn't look warm enough for her taste, but perhaps the place that this woman had come from was warmer. Or, perhaps, she was not as bothered by the cold as Alanna, who was notorious for her dislike of the cold. "I'm very grateful that my armor was here though. Much less grateful for the abduction though," she added dryly.

It was good that she had her armor, even if she was lacking in weapons. There was comfort in having it, especially given that this particular set had been given to her by her friends on her eighteenth birthday. It was important to her.

The Lioness looked at the newcomer with interest. "You are new here too then?"

[identity profile] newyorkbynight.livejournal.com 2011-10-03 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm not sure Stacy thinks of it as abduction," Elisa commented, though there was really no other word for it. "She saved us from our worlds and now she's giving us a chance to fight for them."

Even as she finished speaking in support of the ship, Elisa shook her head. She wasn't convinced. Why had they been saved, rather than someone else? Why had they been woken up? And why didn't she remember her first time out of the pods?

If what she'd heard was true - if she had been out and about on the ship before - then she wasn't new. But she felt as if she was. That was close enough.

"Yes. I'm Elisa Maza."

[identity profile] lionesschampion.livejournal.com 2011-10-06 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
"So, we're told," Alanna added stiffly, still not convinced about this supposed rescue or at least still trying to deny that there would have been any need for a rescue. It was easier then thinking about all she knew being gone.

She bowed to the woman. "I'm Alanna. I'm glad to meet you. Have you discovered much about this place yet?"

[identity profile] newyorkbynight.livejournal.com 2011-10-07 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Elisa wasn't convinced either. She wasn't the sort of person to take something as important as the end of her world on trust. (Especially when the person giving her that information had just abducted her.)

"She thinks she's saved us," Elisa corrected, "And not enough. But I do know where you can find the weapons locker. If you're interested."

She had a feeling that Alanna would be interested.

[identity profile] lionesschampion.livejournal.com 2011-10-18 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
There was definitely interest reflected in Alanna's violet eyes at Elisa's suggestion. Her hand fell to the empty scabbard at her side and she bit her lip in frustration. She felt ill-prepared without a weapon in hand, even though she did have some knowledge of unarmed fighting. Even a knife would a welcome addition, although she'd prefer a sword of possible. "That... would be very helpful to know," she asked cautiously, trying not to sound overanxious. "Where is it?"

(OOC: I am so very sorry about how long this response took. If you'd prefer not to continue this thread then I understand. Thank you and I'm sorry.)

"It's this way," said Elisa, indicating the direction that Eva had taken her in earlier. "They don't have much ..." - not as much as Elisa would have liked, certainly - "... but you should be able to find something you like."

She had a feeling that this woman wasn't a hand gun sort of person.

OOC: No need to apologise! I don't believe in rushing and Alanna is always worth the wait.

[identity profile] lionesschampion.livejournal.com 2011-10-20 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
Alanna hesitated for a moment, concern flickering through her mind at the thought of following a complete stranger to an unknown area, where she could potentially be put at a severe disadvantage. Certainly Elisa seemed friendly enough, but it was when you let your guard down that you discovered that the Black God lurked just around the next corner. Toying with the ember stone at her neck, the Lioness finally reached her decision and followed cautiously, watching the other woman carefully just in case. She'd noticed nothing in Elisa's demeanor to assume that the woman meant her harm and she really did want to get her hand on a weapon.

"I'll simply have to make due with what's there," she responded, offering a tentative smile to Elisa. "A good sword would be best, but I can use a number of weapons reasonably well at least." She let out a soft laugh and added, "Although I wasn't at the time, I'm grateful now for all the bruises that I got learning to use those weapons and all those hard hours of practice because it means now that I can fight with them. It gives me more flexibility in a battle and that can mean the difference between life and death at times."

She shot Elisa a curious look. "What sort of weapons do you specialize in?"

(OOC: Thank you. :) )

[identity profile] newyorkbynight.livejournal.com 2011-10-20 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
It was unfamiliar territory for Elisa as well. She wasn't the most trusting of people, but they were all equally as lost and they were all in this war together. There was no reason for to hide.

"Not swords," said Elisa honestly, taking her gun out of her makeshift holster to show it to Alanna. It wasn't loaded, but she handled it with the care that came from long years of experience. "Do they have this sort of weapon in your world?"

She'd learned a long time ago not to make assumptions about that sort of thing.

[identity profile] lionesschampion.livejournal.com 2011-10-25 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Alanna's eyes widened as she looked at the odd weapon and started to reach a tentative hand toward it, although she stopped herself quickly enough, allowing her hand to fall back to her side again. She shook her head. "I don't recognize it. How do you use it?" It certainly didn't look like the sort of weapon that she herself was used to wielding.

[identity profile] newyorkbynight.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"Careful," Elisa warned, not because she didn't want Alanna to learn but because she knew the damage that a gun could do when it was wielded by someone who didn't understand it. She had the scars to prove it. "It fires metal pellets - bullets - out of the barrel. They can do a lot of damage. I can't really show you here."

[identity profile] lionesschampion.livejournal.com 2011-11-06 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
Alanna flushed a bit at the warning, embarrassed by her own impetuous behavior. She knew better then to reach for another's weapon, especially when it was one that she didn't recognize.

"I apologize, Elisa," she said ruefully. "I suppose I was a bit overeager."

Confusion covered her face as the Lioness examined the weapon with her eyes as she thought over what Elisa had told her about it. It... fired metal pellets. Did... it function like a bow then, propelling the pellet like the bow propelled arrows? It was hard to imagine the little device in the other woman's hand doing just that, but she saw no reason to doubt Elisa's explanation. Nor did she doubt that the weapon could be dangerous. She knew well just how much damage a skilled archer could do and, even if it turned out that this weapon did function much like a bow (It obviously couldn't function exactly like one given its design. She was mostly going based on the closest match that she could find.), any projectiles fired with enough force from a distance were a serious threat.

She offered a weary smile and agreed, "Yes, I imagine that showing off any weapons right now would be a bad idea. There are far too many people wandering around. We don't want to alarm anyone. I'll just take your word on the damage." Her violet eyes darted back to examine the weapon, her face thoughtful. "How does it fire the pellets. I don't see any way to launch them?"

[identity profile] newyorkbynight.livejournal.com 2011-11-07 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's fine," Elisa assured her, with the patient smile of someone who was used to introducing people to a future world that was utterly alien to them. The gargoyles hadn't known what to make of modern technology when they'd awoken from their stone sleep and she regretted not impressing the danger of guns on them - and on Broadway in particular - straight away. "I don't mind teaching you what it does, but I don't want us to get into trouble before we've even worked out where we are."

"There's a mechanism inside," she explained, "It propels the bullet out of the barrel when you pull the trigger."

[identity profile] lionesschampion.livejournal.com 2011-11-08 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
Alanna returned the smile, glad that Elisa was being so understanding on the matter. "Thank you. I certainly appreciate the help and I definitely agree that it would be best to avoid trouble for now. No reason to invite it when it's so easy to avoid."

So, definitely not like a bow then. The only mechanism for a bow was to draw the string and arrow back to gain enough force to launch it. It sounded a little bit more like a crossbow, but even that didn't seem quite right.

"Well, it's certainly interesting," the young knight said softly, eying the weapon carefully. "It's definitely not a weapon that I've seen or used before. If it wouldn't be too much of an inconvenience, I'd love to see it in action when it would safer to do so. I assume that this place must have some place for us to train safely." She hoped so at least. Letting her skills falter due to a lack of practice seemed an excellent way to get herself killed in a fight. "It certainly seems large enough to have a training area of some sort anyway and if they expect us to fight then I can't imagine that they'd give us no opportunity to keep in fighting shape."

[identity profile] newyorkbynight.livejournal.com 2011-11-08 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
At that, Elisa nodded. She didn't go looking for trouble - except when her job required it - but trouble often found her. Especially since meeting the clan. She dealt with it but she had enough to worry about without inviting more.

"Every army needs training," she conceded. Not just to keep them in shape, but to get them used to working as a unit. "It's a deal. Maybe you could show me some of the weapons from your world?"

[identity profile] lionesschampion.livejournal.com 2011-11-16 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, Alanna understood that all too well. She didn't usually go seeking trouble if it could be helped, unless it was the sort that her duties as a knight bound her to deal with such as helping another who was in need, but it found her just the same. Given that trouble also often seemed to come hand in hand with adventure, something that she did sometimes seek out on her own, she'd learned to accept and deal with it.

The Lioness was quick to agree. "I'd like that very much, Elisa. It's only fair anyway. You teach me and I teach you, so that we both end up wiser for the experience." Even though she didn't plan to go trade in her sword for this strange weapon of Elisa's, it was always better to know more then less. Ignorance was a good way to end up very dead and Alanna was in no hurry to meet the Black God.

Turning her attention back to their current task, she asked, "How much longer before we reach the armory?"

[identity profile] newyorkbynight.livejournal.com 2011-11-18 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"I think we're close ..." said Elisa, though it was only the second time she'd visited the weapons locker and it would be a long time before she felt as comfortable on the ship as she did in Manhattan. Sure enough, however, they rounded another oddly organic looking corner and found themselves standing outside.

"Here we are." Triumphant, Elisa led the way inside. She was still in awe of the vast warehouse and the array of weapons it held, but at least she was able to prefer herself this time. "There's not much choice and we'll have to be careful not to get lost, but it's ..." She broke off, then smiled softly. "It's definitely impressive."

Alanna followed Elisa eagerly inside, curious at what she would see. She was not at all prepared for the sight that greeted her though. The building seemed to stretch back quite a distance and there were weapons all over the place, many of which were completely unfamiliar to her.

"It's... definitely impressive," she admitted as the shock finally began to wear off enough for her to be able to speak again, her eyes scanning the room. "How do we find what we're looking for here? Is it sorted in a particular way?" Swordswoman that she was, Alanna was anxious to get her hand on a sword. She felt far too vulnerable without one.

[identity profile] newyorkbynight.livejournal.com 2011-11-19 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"I've only been here once before, but it looks like we can only help our selves to the basics." She started to walk forward, past the cases of guns and towards weapons that Alanna would be more at home with. "I'd say a sword counts as an essential."

In answer to her question, Elisa could only shrug helplessly. She hated feeling so out of her element. She was used to being in control or, at the very least, having the facts that would help her regain control at hand.

"Your guess is as good as mine. But we should be able to find something if we work together."

[identity profile] lionesschampion.livejournal.com 2011-11-20 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
"I'd certainly hope that a sword counts as an essential," Alanna agreed as place.

Her eyes scanned the shelves as they walked. "Well, then let's look. They must be in here somewhere. Hopefully, they'll all be stored together."

Along the walls were more weapons that resembled the one that Elisa had shown her. As interesting as they were though, they weren't what Alanna sought. She paused as they passed a number of small axes and stared at them for a long moment. They were the first familiar weapons that she'd seen and she was plenty capable in their use, but they also weren't her first choice in a fight if she had another option. They were strong weapons, capable of doing a great deal of damage in experienced hands, but they were also usually very heavy weapons and they weren't generally as versatile as a sword. Even these smaller ones could not match the ease with which a sword could be wielded and it would not be possible to carry as many weapons with her as she had when she'd traveled in her own world. It would weigh her down far too much, slowing her movements. A sword would be a far better close range weapon then an axe for her purposes, although she kept an eyes out for a decent bow as well. If she were to choose a second weapon, then that would be it. A sword to be used for close range combat and a bow for long range fighting.

She moved on again, quickening her step to catch up with Elisa.

Her eyes then lit up as they fell on a very familiar looking shaped weapon in front of them and she quickly made her way over to it, placing her hand on the hilt of a large sword. As she looked at the area around her, she spotted a few different possible sword options, which was helpful.

Eying the swords, she selected one that looked to be about the right size and weight for her. Technically she could have used any of them thanks to all the practice that she'd had with Coram's old sword, but ideally she wanted a sword that truly fit her so that she could wield it easily.

"Hmm," she murmured as she lifted the weapon up carefully, gripping the hilt tightly. "Not quite right. Too light." Alanna selected another of a similar size, but a slightly thicker blade. "Better." A smile crossed her face as she tested the sharpness of the blade. "This one will do." It wasn't a perfect fit, but it felt comfortable enough in her hand and the weight was right. This sword would serve her needs well.

[identity profile] newyorkbynight.livejournal.com 2011-11-21 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Elisa also kept a close eye on the weapons - particularly when they stepped out of her comfort zone of basic hand guns and towards sections filled with the sort of weapons they no longer used in her time - but she kept an even closer eye on the way Alanna reacted to them. She was calm and professional, which was a good sign. It was important to treat weapons of any sort with respect.

"Good," she said, smiling, "At least you're prepared now."

Prepared and ready to face whatever the war threw at them.

[identity profile] lionesschampion.livejournal.com 2011-11-22 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Alanna nodded, smiling as she slipped the sword into the scabbard at her waist. "Yes. Thank you for bringing me here."

She looked at Elisa fondly, happy to have met the woman. Allies that you could count on were worth more then any amount of gold or jewels and, based on what she'd seen of Elisa so far, she suspected that the woman would be just such a companion. "This experience has been a rewarding one for more reasons then just acquiring the sword. I hope that I'll have the chance to see you again during our time here."

[identity profile] newyorkbynight.livejournal.com 2011-11-23 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"You're welcome," said Elisa, who felt exactly the same way. There had been a time when she'd truly believed that a detective had to work alone, but she'd learned the value of good friends and true allies over the last few years. They were worth more than anything else. "And I'll make sure you do."

It might have been a big ship and they might have been thrown into the middle of an entirely alien war, but a detective from New York wouldn't let a few minor details like that stand in her way.
