Being sent off into the unknown was part of the risks that being on the ship had brought them. Thankfully they were getting a chance to stock up before heading out.

But just what was waiting out there?

[[Just so you all know, this is bendy time for around the 12th on the meatship, so those who were hurt during the battle should be much, much better. This is also the only post that will be open to both groups before they split off, and anyone who wishes to see them off can do so. In fact, it's encouraged!]]

She took the hand, shook it almost on autopilot - she'd done enough meet and greets in the military that the reaction was well-trained. She even managed to keep the smile up.

"Sumeragi. Exploration... isn't really my forte, unfortunately." Leave that stuff to the scientists. And people who didn't have headaches.

Good handshake on this one! He liked a human with a good handshake because the fact was, no one liked a noodle-limp one. Noodly and clammy, those were the worst! Pleased with Sumeragi's shake, the Doctor pumped her hand and clapped his other on hers.

"Really? Love it myself, loads better than it being peaceful," the Doctor's lip curled at the word. He finally released her hand. "So, forte. Yours, that is. If it's not exploration, than what it is it?"

God help her, he wasn't going away. And was actually getting more manic it seemed like. She didn't realize that was possible. The emotional introversion of most of the Meisters was frustrating, but she found herself rather missing it right now.

"I'm a combat strategist."

That brought the Doctor up short. Just a little. But enough for him to fix a little frown at her.

"Combat strategist?" He repeated after Sumeragi. His voice wasn't quite frosty, but there was still a faint undertone of disapproval. Disappointment. He supposed she'd get along well with River Song then. They could discuss shooting things that probably didn't need shooting. "Life career or temporary until you can find something else?"

The shift was subtle, but even in her slightly-less-than-coherent state, Sumeragi still caught it. Wasn't the first time, after all.

"Career," she replied bluntly. "But I'm not military." At leas she could say that without lying now - one point up for her conscience.

The Doctor sniffed, not trying very hard to be polite. "Rubbish career," he said. "Have you considered gardening? Or rowing, I understand that's good for the lungs."

Sumeragi managed to resist the urge to roll her eyes, though it was a hard-won fight. "Someone has to do it. For now, anyway." If her job became obsolete - well, she'd be the first to cheer.

Ah, there it was: the "for now" gave the Doctor hope, his expression lightening as he suddenly broke into a smile.

"Right," he clasped his hands together, turning and wheeling toward the rest of the Obs Deck. "I wonder if we should pack? My pockets aren't what they used to be," The Doctor confided in Sumeragi. Chances are he was seconds away from asking her to show him how to pack, human-style. "What about you?"

Sumeragi gave him an awkward half-shrug. Her cropped jacket did have some pockets, but they were mostly empty.

"Uh. I didn't really think to bring anything - I've never been on a mission like this before..." And even the ones she was used to planning - well, the mobile suits had their own survival packs if anything went more than a couple of hours.
