Newbie Meet n' Greet

For the newbies, there are people waiting for them in the Obs Deck. A whole gaggle of people. Behind them is the nasty statue, and the beautiful sight through the windows of the stars streaming past and the swirling vortex of collars that was interdimensional travel.

There are more questions than answers, but the crew is willing to help, especially the Command Staff and greeters.

"Acting first officer?" The small woman is young, definitely, but not flustered. Her expression is even and her handshake is firm. "I suppose a good place to start would be explaining whom 'we' encompasses and why you are the 'acting' first officer, in as such as what might have happened to the one who held your position previously?"

Yeah none of that 'where am I, how did I get here?' stuff.

Kirk raises a brow and then grins as he gives her hand a firm shake. A no-nonsense type. He can tell he's probably going to like her, "Well, 'we' would be the reluctant crew of this vessel, who've been snatched here from various eras of time and space and I would be the acting first officer because my technical rank is Captain and I'm merely acting as first officer for the ad hoc crew organization we've put together."

"Should I take that to mean that there is little to no evidence towards what may have happened to the crew native to this ship?" Various eras of time and space is something Diana will have to ponder on later. "What of the current task set towards the crew and cargo? This 'Great Purpose', as it were?"

Great Purposes, in Diana's life, had been wars.

"I'm afraid not. The ship's AI has answered some of our questions, but the real answers are few and far between."

Unfortunately, Kirk is still trying to figure this place out, "Apparently, we're being sent on missions in various times and places to either correct or retrieve things for the ship. That's all I know at the moment, I'm afraid, although we believe it has something to do with saving the multiverse."

"The AI? I am afraid that, and the term 'multiverse' are not words with which I am immediately familiar." She folds her hands in front of her, patiently awaiting an answer.

Ah. This would be slightly difficult.

"An AI is an artificial intelligence... a sentient being, created via computer or some other technology, not one of a living creature. An incredibly advanced computer program, so as to be virtually indistinguishable from that of a living human being. As for the multiverse? Well, there are theories that there are universes, parallel to our own that are like ours, but different. Apparently that theory is correct."

Diana nods, once. "Artificial intelligence is a concept that I am familiar with, though in the society I am from it is currently a source of great debate between the religious and the technical. When you say indistinguishable, I should take that to mean on a cognitive scale?" Or is he talking about artificial intelligences running around in bodies that appear to be human?

These differences, they are important.

"I see. That is another concept I am familiar with, though under another name. Does this vessel easily move between universes, then?"

"Ah,I mean in terms of a cognitive scale, of course - although I have run into essentially human androids in my travels, although I don't believe we've any aboard. It's... slightly disconcerting."

He sets his hands on his hips and nods, "So far as we can tell, yes."

Diana steeples her fingers and considers all of that. "Disconcerting that there is artificial intelligence or disconcerting when what houses said intelligence looks very similar to you and I?"
