Newbie Meet n' Greet

For the newbies, there are people waiting for them in the Obs Deck. A whole gaggle of people. Behind them is the nasty statue, and the beautiful sight through the windows of the stars streaming past and the swirling vortex of collars that was interdimensional travel.

There are more questions than answers, but the crew is willing to help, especially the Command Staff and greeters.

"Hn. Yes. I know this place. Very well." He follows after her, head bobbing side to side.

As they walk, River keeps talking. It's not every day you get to converse with a dinosaur. "What's it like, where you're from?"

Huh. This is the first time a human has asked him that.

"It is a good place to live! My tribe's hunting territory is on the edge of the forest and we have trees and water nearby for our shelter, and the grasslands stretch out from there. Perfect for hunting with lots of tall grass and places to hide. Lots of herbivores to eat. It's the best place in the world!" He seems pretty pleased with his home.

She smiles a dreamy little smile at his description. "That sounds very nice. I'm not a hunter, but I like trees and grass. What do you do when you're not hunting or sleeping or eating?" Those were just the basics, after all. Everyone had hobbies, even dinosaurs, she was sure.

"I fight. And beat up the lower ranked raptors. And take naps. And watch the little ones while their mothers take naps. And fight some more. And maybe target practice if I can spare the bullets." He scratches his snout absent mindedly. He misses home.

A raptor who liked to fight and shoot guns, but had a soft spot for kids. So he was a Jayne-raptor. River nodded agreeably at his explanation as the sensoriums came into view.

"Here we are." She opened the doors to one of the rooms, thinking that she'd like some big mirrors. When the doors opened, the whole room was made of mirrors.

Red Snout gapes, spinning around and around to look at all the mirrors. He could see himself, clear as day. Not like the murky reflection you got from water or steel, but a real clear reflection. He could see every detail!

"Amazing!"

Sorry for the incredibly late reply. ;;

"Does it look correct?" She knew he would say yes, but it was polite to ask. She couldn't stop smiling at his enthusiasm for the mirrors. Privately, she thought there were some other human things he might like.

S'all good!

"Hn. It is passable. For a job done by a human." He grudgingly says, not willing come out and outright praise the human for a job well done. It might make her think he likes her or something. And of course there are human things he likes. Like guns. And bullets. And scalps.

He taps a claw against a mirror, blinking.

"Hn. Amazing."

River resists the urge to giggle, knowing full well she did a good job. If raptors have birthdays, she thinks she might try to find him a knife for his. Reflective, shiny, and a weapon. And since this is a Jayne-raptor, and Jayne likes knives, she thinks it would be the perfect gift.

"Compressed, melted sand, stretched flat, shined and polished. Paint the back with silver and tin to create a mirror." It's a (very) simplified explanation for the creation of a mirror, but it gets the point across. River suspects she might frustrate the raptor with too many variables.

"Sand? Truly?" He's curious now, poking at the glass with one claw, small scratches appearing on the surface.

"Humans are, I admit, quite clever when it comes to things that are not fighting."

[identity profile] reaverkiller.livejournal.com 2009-07-06 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"Different kinds of sand to make different kinds of glass. But most glass is fragile." She's not really concerned if Red Snout breaks it, though. This is only a sensorium, after all.

"We can be," she replies, not mentioning that humans can be rather clever when it comes to fighting, too.

[identity profile] raptorwithagun.livejournal.com 2009-07-07 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"But...but...how can this be sand?" He taps the glass again. Sand was coarse, grainy. Small pieces. THis was smooth, with an amazing luster. Impossible!

"Heat it up until it's liquid and then it takes on new forms. Like metal." Hopefully that's a familiar enough frame of reference for the raptor. Unless he didn't know how his gun and bullets were made, either.

"Astounding. How would you get it that hot, though? It would take a huge fire!" He's just curious about glass now, forgetting everything else as he quizzes River.
