Marriage Planet

Stacy's voice came over the comm, blaring across the entire ship.

||Attention, Attention. All personnel please report to the Observation Deck. Attention, Attention. All personnel please report to the Observation Deck. Attention, Attention, all personnel...||

The mouth in the main sculpture on Obs Deck opened, revealing a screen with the image of a mottled blue and purple planet, rotating slowly.

Mass slightly larger than most Earths.
Non-sentient life: Extensive flora and fauna.

Time for another mission, then.

"Hello, Alex," Anwei said. "Did I tell you that I talked to Doctor Henderson about working on the Med Bay database?"

Alex smiled, waved, and shook his head. "N-no, I had no idea! That's g-great though!"

"Yes, first pass at my data is promising - as in, nothing got too garbled by the translation engine." Alex looked nervous, and she wasn't certain if she should keep trying to distract him or start on the mission.

Actually, she was probably trying to distract herself. Her first combat on the side of strangers, and no idea of what sort of weapons or talents they could bring to bear.

"I've been on combat drops before - anything you need advice on, I'll do my best."

He looked at her sheepishly and quipped, "E-everything." He had watched a few moments of combat when Mikel got caught this one time, but that was someone with very different and very offensive shadow powers using them to block gunfire. It's not like any of those shields of his was likely to block gunfire. He had always been too afraid to test it.

She cleared her head for a moment, thinking about what would be appropriate for someone who was going into battle for the first time.

"Keep track of where you are, and where the other people on your side are. Don't be afraid to look stupid - don't think that someone else has reported that creeping shadow, go ahead and call it out. If you get an order you don't understand, rephrase it and say it back to make sure. Pace yourself - you can wring yourself out and collapse if you tense up too hard for too long. Take a break if you have to, just make sure the rest of the team knows."

She snickered. "And whenever you get the chance, either take a bathroom break or eat - because doing either while fighting is a problem.," The she paused, remembering. "Do you need to eat something now? I mean, if that isn't too personal. I could try to - make a shadow, or whatever."

Alex stared at Anwei, only getting maybe a part of the things she was telling him. They made sense at least, though he worried about his ability to judge between a normal shadow and one of his shadows, but at least either one would signal a person's approach.

The one thing he did have to disagree with was the eating- in his case at least. "W-well, I know Mikel a-and Loretta used t-to eat each o-others, a-and sometimes mine so that th-their minds were c-clearer, b-but that's the s-sorta thing I'd warn about."

He paused a second, nibbling his lower lip, "b-but this isn't s-supposed to involve f-fighting, is it?"

She didn't want to upset Alex, but it looked like she had.

"Maybe I'm too used to dealing with mercenaries." Who could quite easily get into fights anywhere; for some reason large groups of armed aliens seemed to bring out the worst in some people. "Everything I said holds true if this turns out to just be a stroll in the gardens to pick up some artifact, right? Don't get lost, ask questions, and pace yourself."

She smiled. "And no snacking on people close to you. No problem."
