Atelier Something Something [Open]

Ed was up and about and puttering around a small building that he had found. It was a fancy little thing that looked like it stepped out of a French boutique. Inside he had found a workspace, like it was a mechanic store, but there were vials everywhere and other assorted items. One of the rare few places that still retained some presence of the former owners.

As such, he had come up on an idea while getting better: a store for Alchemy. Not just any store, but a store designed to make little things for people that were within the realm of transmutation.

Thus, gathering loose items such as ores, junk, broken toys (he checked to make sure they weren't alive like Woody), and other such brick-a-brack, he had placed them around the shop to make it feel more welcoming.

Finally he was done, and with it came a name. The faded sign read Atelier which meant an artists studio or workroom. Thus being said, he was pouring over a list of possible names for his store, keeping in the tradition of Atelier something something.

In his haste to keep the items together, he had left the door open, awaiting visitors.

"I don't think that will be much of a problem," said the elf who had rejected the magical power of his own blood and heritage for the sake of studying the powers and learning them the hard way.

Curious, Aibghalien moved to look more closely at a circle, mentally comparing it to his own knowledge of circles and their uses in directing energy. "Interesting," he said, the sort of word that summed up an unfathomable ocean of thought.

"Yeah, it's pretty challenging too when one first picks it up." agreed Ed, coming to point at a circle that had a couple of intertwined diagrams within a single circle. "That one is meant for changing the state of metal into weaponry such as spears and swords. It can be adjusted for stone as well. The Major used it when he was in combat, and branded them onto his gloves."

He gestured at another one with a flame crest atop it. "That one's for making fire, something that the bastard colonel used." He sighed. "He's repodded now, but damn I miss it when he would snap his fingers and generate fire at me."

"There is certainly a parallel, inasmuch as a number of spells I know use a circle to conduct or contain the flow of energy," Aibghalien said. His own professorial voice was no less strong. "But there is an oppositional principle as well, in that the spells I referenced are primarily used to manipulate abstracts rather than material or energy concepts--"

He cut himself off before he could start ranting with all the fervor of a Spark in Castle Heterodyne. "Yes. Yes, I would certainly love to study this... the moreso since you imply it takes no natural gift to learn, which it appears every other form of magic or power possessed by the people on this ship besides my own requires. What may I offer you in return?"

"Oh just help around the place once in a while," said Ed. "If you haven't realized I'm uh...." He made a height motion and then pointed at the tall shelves. "Sometimes I need help getting things out of the top or putting them up."

"In any case, I hold my class up in Hydroponics about twice a week give or take crazy interruptions," added Ed. "It starts with books and then I'll guide new people through transmutations."

[identity profile] for-magic.livejournal.com 2010-10-22 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"I could conjure an unseen servant and establish it here permanently under your control," Aibghalien mused. "That would be trivial, honestly. Almost too trivial, I feel like I'm taking more than I'm giving--

"...Books?" He looked up again.

[identity profile] fulltinyalchemy.livejournal.com 2010-10-22 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, when I first popped I scoured the Media Library for books from my own world, and came up with some of the best stuff." replied Ed.

Best stuff, including a copy of a certain alchemist's notes in code tucked away in a safe, now in the back room of the Atelier that had no door. Only a trained alchemist could transmute the lock open. No sense letting certain diabolical things get out, and he had stored everything involving the philosopher's stone in his personal belongings. Along with a text detailing chimeras in case Shou Tucker ever popped.

"I've spent time translating them into the language used here, since most of them are in Amestrian," added Ed. "I'm just in the process of getting the real meat and potatoes all ready for students."

"Let me know if you ever feel like loaning any of those out for personal study..." The elf was already digging into his robes. From them he produced a crystal that seemed to shine with an inner light. This he studied carefully, judging it without looking at it, as if the senses involved were not the normal five (which in fact they were not).

[identity profile] fulltinyalchemy.livejournal.com 2010-10-22 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"Not a problem. I'll be transmuting copies later," said Ed with a light grin. Nice to know there were always people willing to learn.

"I subscribe to the physical side of alchemy. Teacher said that a healthy body equals a healthy and strong alchemist with a healthy mind. Of course she said that while beating the crap out of me and Al." Briefly he wondered where Al was and hoped he didn't get repodded while he hadn't been looking.

"Ah, well, wizardry doesn't lend itself much to athleticism, though I got into enough scrapes and brushes over the years that I ended up knowing my way around a sword or a bow better than your average footsoldier," he said with a shrug. Judging the crystal adequate, apparently, he snapped his fingers. Immediately, nothing coalesced into a nonpresence.

Ed arched an eyebrow at the use of magic and a low whistle escaped his lips. Definitely impressed with the way that he called energy together at least. "Yeah, what's it what Matt calls it? Glass Cannons." He shrugged at that. "Back home, it's Alchemy or gun, and I'm not a good shot but I'm working on that."

[identity profile] for-magic.livejournal.com 2010-10-23 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh, I wouldn't necessarily say that. You wouldn't believe how many defensive spells a wizard is capable of casting." Aibghalien actually grimaced a little, remembering the time a helicopter had crashed onto him and been dissolved into light as a side-effect of one of his protections. That had really hurt, at the time.

He made a few passes and spoke a word or two, then looked back to Ed. "Try commanding it, we'll see if I did this properly."

[identity profile] fulltinyalchemy.livejournal.com 2010-10-26 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Ed nodded at the first part and turned to the second. "Uh, go get me that sketch at the top shelf," he said, pointing to the uppermost shelf. "And that empty vial next to it."

[identity profile] for-magic.livejournal.com 2010-10-26 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Without any visible evidence of its presence, the unseen servant did just that. The sketch and vial rose, as if levitating, then drifted over to present themselves to Ed.

[identity profile] fulltinyalchemy.livejournal.com 2010-10-26 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"Now that is handy," said Ed as he took the vial and drawing. "This will do, this will do nicely!"

He grinned, setting them on the table before reaching for a book and handing it to Aibghalien. "Here, read this. It's a beginners text to alchemy, mostly scientific principals. It'll get you started on it. Bring it back, I haven't finished making copies."

[identity profile] for-magic.livejournal.com 2010-10-26 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"Is there any inherent quality to the text that would prevent me from copying it?" Aibghalien inquired. Many tomes of magic had spells or wards laid into them, or composing them, which stymied duplication.

[identity profile] for-magic.livejournal.com 2010-10-26 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
"I read a lot," the elf quipped, then pronounced several words of power as he made a pass with his hand over the book. With a shuddering wrench the book duplicated itself, at which point Aibghalien offered back the original as he tucked the new copy away with a smile.

[identity profile] for-magic.livejournal.com 2010-10-26 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's useless on spellbooks or scrolls," Aibghalien said with a shrug. "But on normal material it's a great timesaver... and it allows me to expand my library, which is something I pride myself on."
