Kneel before your god

Shiva spoke through the comms (not the omnicomms) directly into the minds of the crew.

«I am Shiva. I am the destroyer of all that you know and the creator of a grand new empire. For months you thought of me as my host, Charles Kawalsky, but now you shall see me in all my glory. I have positioned bombs throughout this vessel, including the pod caverns. I need but press the trigger and they will explode. I also have one hostage of my own, Sheryl. You will not be able to stop me. I am fully equipped with a power dampener, and a forcefield. I am untouchable. You have one hour to surrender yourselves to me and begin your new lives as my slaves.»

His eyes flashed gold and he held his hostage firmly. He did not wish to wait, but if he tired of this he would amend his demands. For now he stayed in one of the areas in the City hidden from Stacy’s view, in the middle of a pile of rubble, with not a landmark in sight.

Still, he knew they would come.

At first, she thought it was a dream. She wasn't hearing the words, she just knew them, except that she couldn't be downloading information without an implant --

That sleepy concern faded away as the message continued. She blinked herself awake as it progressed, and was sitting dazedly by the end of it. She wasn't in her bed, or a bunk, or even under a dumpster. She was being manhandled by someone who thought she would be a hostage! Like hell! She hadn't fought through the Vajra for this! She let out an ear-piercing scream, drawing on years of vocal training to hit the shrillest and most painful note she could.

She winced and cut the scream off. Whatever happened, she was going to follow it all through to the end, and that meant staying conscious. "What the hell do you think you're doing?" she hissed.

She squirmed to push a piece of hair back behind her ear. So killing everyone was the second-best option, right? Well, that was better than nothing, and... it was easier to hear this bow down thing from a strange guy than from Grace. At least she'd be able to watch someone blast him without thinking about all the times they'd slept together...!

But Grace was... Grace had been controlling the queen when she demanded Frontier to surrender, but she hadn't been able to keep control of the queen. Whoever this body belonged to, something of its original owner was still inside. She'd heard that much. And that meant there was still something she could try. I need to breathe.

"Oh my," she said, forcing herself to keep her voice light and professional, "if that's what you want, you need to learn to treat a lady better."

"Are you sure?" she smiled. "Because we do have to be alive to be slaves."

He was stupid! What kind of god was that stupid? What she wanted to do was punch him in the nose, but he had that thing, and she had to admit that he'd have every advantage if she tried to take him on in any physical contest. "But better dead than alive." She sighed heavily. "A god doesn't need to squeeze a woman to pieces to hold her hostage, right?"

"So you want me to stand here and wait to die? Sorry, but I don't leave my fate in anyone else's hands."

She let her body relax against his grip, trying to mimic the way she'd reacted when Grace announced that she was going to die. Like that time, she had nothing but herself and a song, though this time she wanted to borrow another tune. She raised her head slightly and launched into the first few lines of a lullaby, moving carefully through the Zentradi words. "Aimo, aimo, neder rushe... Noina miria ender prodea, fotomi..."

"Singing. You've heard it before, right?"

"Send your complaints to my agent. I imagine he's in the pods. Don't kill him." And Ranka was on the ship... would she hear this? "Lulei, luleia, waves dance across the ocean like birds in the sky. Lulei, luleia, sleep now, sleep now, the sea’s here for you."

"Or what? You don't have any other hostages."

"You're not a god, you're an angry five-year-old!" she snapped, stomping a foot.

"The hell it isn't! You need to grow up and realize that you're stuck in the amateur leagues!"

"Thousands of years and you're taking over one ship? How does it feel to be completely outclassed by the Ohm?" She was going shrill. Focus!
