Beastboy was for the most part a highly emotional boy, running on lots of energy, irrepressible cheer and a sense of humor that was...unique at best.

But sometimes...sometimes he needed time to think and be quiet. Usually he could do that while playing game station, reading comics or going for a flight.

Today however despite his lack of desire to socialize he had energy to burn. That creepy robo chick had teased him with cake and gotten him all worked up, only to drop him just in time to find out he'd missed a huge fight.

So being the responsible and intelligent hero he imagined he was, Beastboy decided he needed a little training to get back into the swing of combat.

The Sensoriums were awesome in his opinion, like a giant do it yourself video game.

So the scene? Jump City streets just outside the his favorite Pizza parlor.

The enemy? Sladebots! The best for cannon fodder, they were robots so he didn't feel bad about stomping them flat, and they were just scary enough to be a challenge.

This was his right? No way he could lose...

***

Within ten minutes he was being rolled down the street by the over zealous Sladebot projections...his imagination was running away with him.

Katara had to laugh at Beastboy's reaction to bringing up his friends without meaning to. She couldn't help it: his humor was actually pretty comforting, a reminder of why she really liked being on the ship even when all of the misfortunes were piling up on her. It was always hard to feel lonely here!

But she couldn't help but notice his reaction to that blond girl. She knew the reaction pretty well: it was the same type she had whenever the subject of Jet was brought up. She guessed there would always be that reluctance to talk about something like that, especially when it was so personal.

But she did laugh when he dismissed his friends so abruptly. "Guess you;re still getting the hang of the Sensoriums, huh?"

Katara laughed. "Beastboy, we don't have anything CLOSE to this back home. Where I come from is all ice and snow, and in the rest of the world, we haven't gotten far enough to make anything like machines yet. The Sensoriums is like something out of a fairy tale!"

Katara turned a hint of pink. This was way too much deja vu right now: once again someone green was reminding her how not with the modern technology she was. She shook this off though: there was no point in her getting bothered by it now.

She laughed a little when he turned into the small bird. "We don't have any of those things where I'm from Beastboy. Most nation have their own kind of recreation: sports, active games, bending."

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2010-07-05 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Katara thought for a moment. "Depends on which nation you are. In the water tribe, we play ice dodging and go penguin sledding. The air nomads used to play airball, or Bison Polo. In the Earth Kingdom, you could play soccer with earthbending, or ride the Elephant Koi if you were in Kyoshi Island. The Firenation had games like Hide and explode, or Kuai Ball. I haven't played all of these games, and I know there's more I've missed, but those are the ones off the top of my head!"

"Trust me, you have no idea," Katara commented, trying not to reflect on exactly how seriously the Firenation could take things. "But you should meet Zuko and Mai, they're firebenders and could give you more accurate information."

When she saw him transform into a penguin, she blinked, confused. "Um, you have the general shape of it right, but the face is all wrong. Pengins look like this."

She took a stick and drew a penguin-otter (http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l35/avatar_portal/official_pics/c_penguin1.jpg).

Katara was glad Beastboy had altered himself to look like the penguin-otter, but now that he was and the snow was starting to fall, she couldn't help herself. She started to move her hands around, and the snow under them started to shift, so that they were now looming over a hill.

"Get ready to be penguin sledded!" Katara said, leaping nimbly on Beastboy, giving him the nudge to go down, with her on top of him. "Geronimo!" she cried, laughing.

Forgive her Beastboy. She'd been playing mom and sister the last few days, it was rare for her to have a kid moment.

"Ha ha, yeah!" Katara cheered, steering Beastboy as if she had been doing this all her life (and she had, actually). She moved her arms in a circular motion to move them even faster, so Beastboy should find himself to move them even faster, as if the snow has somehow gotten more slick.

And as long as they were having fun, why not make it interesting? Katara had the Sensorium place random icebergs in their way and now Katara was either moving them with her hands or maneuvering out of the way just in time. With Beastboy as the penguin, this was the fastest she'd gone yet!

She'd have to thank him later for being such a good sport and letting her ride him on the slopes!

Snowballs? Ha! That was still water, and Katara knew how to deal with that. With every snowball lobbed, Katara stopped it in place and swung it right back, knowing a few of the snowmen's heads off. She wasn't known as a master waterbender for nothing.

But she couldn't avoid every snowball, so she assumed ice dodging Rule number one: be fast enough to react to the environment, and be clever.

Oh, but it helped to have take part in Sokka's ritualistic test of manhood ice dodging. With the jump, she lowered herself closer to Beastboy, making sure not to catch on any of the rings and was airborn for a few good seconds. She steered Beastboy well enough to go cleanly through each ice rink until they hit the next snow slope.

She disembarked, grinning. "That was great!"

"I'm just glad I was still able to do it!" Katara exclaimed. "Its been a long time since I got to do this, but it looks like I've still got it!"

She grinned. "You have pretty sweet powers!" Katara said. "I've never seen anything like it!"

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2010-07-06 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Katara couldn't help but laugh. Beastboy actually reminded her a lot of Jet a bit, not so much with the hating of the Firenation but more of the strength and the cockiness. It was more funny though.

"Yeah, I guess they are pretty cool," Katara said. "Besides, I think you'll fit in here just fine: we're still trying to help people, right?"

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2010-07-07 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
"Good luck then," Katara said, "because we'll need all the help we can get, right? So I'm curious: what's your story, Beastboy?"
