To say Vader was out of his element was the understatement of the millennium. He'd taken refuge under a large umbrella and was seated in his his chair as though it were the Emperor's own throne. Under the pretense of meditating, he was keeping a three-foot radius of space around him sand-free.

His beach towel would stay immaculate until he got someone else's blood on it.

"I won't take you if you don't want to go." Yet. "You can't change what happened but you can choose what happens now. If all you do is think about what you lost then how will you get a chance to get to know your son now?"

He's knows she's right-- she's right, and he's getting out-parented by a teenager and it just makes him mad.

Well, madder than he already was.

"I have told you before that my son will come to me if he wishes to speak to me. Until then, he is welcome to keep his distance- you do not spook a nekk you hope to one day train. I will lure him until he is eating out of my hand rather than that of the Jedi's."

Sofia crossed her arms over her chest. "It sounds like you are talking about a dog. Luke is a grown man and you should treat him like one."

"He is my son and he has been fed lies by the Jedi his entire life-- he has no idea how the Galaxy actually functions," Vader shot back, "he lives in a world of fantasy- I intend to save him from it."

Must resist urge to eyeroll. "If that is true then you're not going to change his mind by snapping at him. You need to act like a father if you want him to listen to you."

"I do not know what he wants! I do not know how to be what he wants!"

Vader shut his mouth with a snap. He's said too much.

"If he's anything like me," Sofia kicked at the sand as she thought over how to express this. "Then he wants you to love him no matter who or what he is and he wants you to understand and respect him."

"How could he not know? How could he not know just how badly I--"

Vader shook his head. "I will make him realize that I want him at my side at all costs."

Sofia shrugged. "Sometimes we're not very good at telling people how we really feel." She thought about her father. If he really did love her and didn't know how to show her or tell her.

"They do not have the Force in your world, as I understand, but in mine--" Vader paused, trying to convey the depth of his earnestness.

"-in mine, he could not leave the boundaries of our galaxy without knowing in his bones that he is my son."

"In your world, he could feel how much you loved him? I wish things were that way in mine. It would have... things would have been different."

"The Force..." Vader gestured, a little lost for words. "It is a power that feeds on life itself, and intertwines each being to one another. Those who are sensitive and can utilize its power can also...commune with one another, either with words or feelings. It is a strange concept to one who is unfamiliar."

Sofia really should have watched more SciFi. "Can you use the Force here? Maybe you can show him how you feel with it?" And then a pause. "Is there a way I could show people how I feel? Or... be able to tell how they feel?"

"Of course. The Force is present wherever there is life to sustain it...or anyone capable of recognizing its presence," Vader shrugged. "He shields me from his thoughts. I am unable to penetrate them-- he is very strong in the Force, it is his birthright."

Vader tilted his head slightly, thinking for a moment. "Without training, the Force is used unconsciously. Do you often predict events before they occur?"

"You could ask him to let you show him."

Sofia laughed. "Oh no, I'm not like Jessie or Irene. I can't predict anything."

Vader shrugged. "You may have to rely on words then, as I must- to commune in the Force is very...personal. It have no doubt that Luke will not allow me in."

Sofia smiled. "You can ask. And if he says no then you will have to rely on words too."

Vader scowled.

"I am a man of actions. Words..."

Were Padme's domain.

"...mean nothing."

"Words can mean nothing if you do not do what you say, but the right words can mean everything. There are three words which can be the most powerful thing in the world and can mean everything to someone: I love you. I'm sure your son would want to hear that."

"And if he does not return that sentiment?" Vader asked, almost inaudibly.

"He's your son and from what I know of him, he does. It takes a lot to break that love. I still love my father, even if he doesn't love me."

"That is foolish of him," Vader said, without thinking. He was loosing his edge, trapped out here as he was.

"Thank you." Sofia said softly. She couldn't help but smile. "Sometimes I think I might be wrong. Maybe he didn't know the words to tell me either."

"I would not concern yourself with it overly," Vader went on, "use your powers to make him suffer for the wrong he has done you."

Well, that served her right for thinking she'd finally got to bring out his softer side.

She sighed and shook her head, stopping herself from rolling her eyes. "I did. It didn't work. I learned that the best thing is to forgive and move on, or at least try."
