Time for the 'meat' and greet
[NOTE: This takes place DURING the holiday plot. If your character is involved in that, then they're still on the surface and not on the ship at this time.]
The rest of the crew assembled on the Observation Deck to meet the latest editions to their numbers. After the revelation that their worlds are gone, many of them are even more eager to see people they knew from home.
Several people are set up near the doors to provide the new people with omnicoms and comm rings.
There's a lot to tell the new people. It's going to be a lot to take in.
[ooc: Only new characters and Command Staff can start new threads for introductions, to limit the number of threads. Everyone else, just tag in and have your guys greet the newbies. The mission is still going on, so if your character is offship, they won't be around for this.]

"We need to work together if we're going to survive."

Uncrossing her arms, though, the woman was quick to offer the Captain a hand. "Lieutenant Gwendolyn MacKenzie. 501st Cavalry Regiment, Independent Forces. Ain't much for knowin' 'bout ships like this, but give me a ground vehicle or a horse an' I can get the job done."
no subject
"Pleased to meet you lieutenant. I'm sure you'll fit right in," he cocked his head with a grin, "Horses? I'm a bit of a rider myself."

She was a scrawny looking girl mostly due to the conditions she had just come from, but her smile was bright enough to wash over the image of a tired soldier. "Yeah. Was raised on a cattle ranch on Verbena. Had t' use 'em a few times durin' th' War too when we couldn't get th' skiffs unfrozen. What do you ride? Western or English?"

The look that washed over Gwen's face was a mixed of stunned disbelief. Of course, being on the ship should have been enough to settle that for her right then and there, but she couldn't help but stuff her hands in her pockets once more watching the older man in pure.. well she wasn't sure what she was thinking now. "Earth-that-was?"
no subject
"Why do you ask?"
no subject
"Earth's been gone a long time. Round five hundred years or so. It got used up so we left it." Green eyes flickered back up to the Captain before she finally raised a hand to scratch at the back of her neck. "Just a little stunned 's all. Ain't something you hear every day."
no subject
His eyes glamed as he recounted his people's history. It was always such an impressive feat to him - to return from near extinction to a prominent member of the galactic community, "We repaired the planet. It's our home, to this day."
no subject
Her smile softened a little as well. "'s good t' hear that at least someone made it work. Some say that Shadow an' Hera were as close t' Earth that they could be.. until the Alliance destroyed 'em."
no subject
He frowned slightly as her expression fell, curiosity piqued, "Shadow? Hera? What happened to them? Surely this Alliance didn't obliterate them for some arbitrary reason?"
no subject
"They bombed Shadow. Nukes.. other heavy weapons of world destroyin' classes. Didn't give a gorram hell if there were folk on the planet or not. It's a dust bowl now." Gwen hadn't known anyone on Shadow though a few of the people she served with were from there. Most of them were dead now along with their entire culture. "Hera is.. well 's where we were makin our last stand. They were bombin' the hell outta us. Said they'd waltz right through Serenity Valley. We showed 'em though. Been holdin' a week straight before I woke here."
Casualty rates were out of the roof. If Kirk knew his history, comparing Gettysburg to Serenity Valley would be appropriate. "'s why I ain't a fan of military run dictatorships and am leery of most civilian run ones at that."

He put a hand on her shoulder with a nod, "I'm sorry. The very idea of destroying a whole world from orbit - it's repugnant. The Federation values individual freedoms and rights very highly."
no subject
The human race never would change. There would always be someone, sometime, that would want to change things or rule over others. It was human nature to build then destroy and rebuild again. The hand upon her shoulder was oddly comforting and felt like a heavy weight all at the same time. One deep breath and the woman was smiling again, albeit a schooled expression. "Ain't no reason t' be sorry, sir. 's just how the hand is dealt sometime."
no subject
He paused, grinning, "And Starfleet is the military and exploration fleet of the Federation."
no subject
Quirking an eyebrow slightly she let the smile grow a little more throwing in a wink for good measure. "Sounds nice though. I rightly just can't seem t' picture a world without all th' fussin' an' fightin' though. Guess I'm just spoiled."
no subject
Kirk shrugs, his smile turning wry, "Well, we have our problems. But I like to think that the human race and the Federation can move on. We still have to make war from time to time, after all."
