Time for the 'meat' and greet

[NOTE: This takes place DURING the holiday plot. If your character is involved in that, then they're still on the surface and not on the ship at this time.]

The rest of the crew assembled on the Observation Deck to meet the latest editions to their numbers. After the revelation that their worlds are gone, many of them are even more eager to see people they knew from home.

Several people are set up near the doors to provide the new people with omnicoms and comm rings.

There's a lot to tell the new people. It's going to be a lot to take in.

[ooc: Only new characters and Command Staff can start new threads for introductions, to limit the number of threads. Everyone else, just tag in and have your guys greet the newbies. The mission is still going on, so if your character is offship, they won't be around for this.]

Kirk nodded at Gwen. Good. Someone else who knew how to think, "I'm afraid we don't know much about the Ohm or the people who claimed to have rescued us. We're doing our best to avoid actual confrontation and outright war until we do know more."

"So we are on th' drift." That didn't settle in the way in the woman's stomach at all. Removing her hands from her pockets she crossed her arms setting a firm expression across her face that Kirk would have known well from his years of command. The gears were working as well as they could at the moment. "Then that means you're trainin' folk or.. at least tryin' to? Half these kids here don't seem th' fighin kind- no harm meant by that."

"Trying to, anyway. And no, we don't expect everyone to fight - we have a science and medical division. We're working on building some form of civilian government, as I mentioned. But we would like everyone to contribute to this crew in some way," He nodded firmly. He liked Gwen already.

"We need to work together if we're going to survive."

Well at least the man wasn't some hot shot know it all Purplebelly. She had to give him some points for the way he was calmly handling the situation, not that she could say the same about some of the new arrivals that were more than a little on the roll of this being a conspiracy theory. "Are there civis here that are qualified t' be runnin any sort of government?" The officer had had enough of political squabbles to last her for a life time thanks.

Uncrossing her arms, though, the woman was quick to offer the Captain a hand. "Lieutenant Gwendolyn MacKenzie. 501st Cavalry Regiment, Independent Forces. Ain't much for knowin' 'bout ships like this, but give me a ground vehicle or a horse an' I can get the job done."

[identity profile] captain-jtk.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
"I believe they are, yes. The demand is there, in any case, and I would rather not have this be a military dictatorship, if I can help it. That's not the way the Federation operates and it's not the way I operate," Kirk responded, extending his hand to give Gwen's a firm shake.

"Pleased to meet you lieutenant. I'm sure you'll fit right in," he cocked his head with a grin, "Horses? I'm a bit of a rider myself."

[identity profile] browncoatdevil.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
"Good. Military ruled government's are just a whole word of trouble. Ain't to shiny a thing t' be involved with." It wasn't the way how operated? First there was some Republic that Wedge talked 'bout and then there was this Federation. Gwen was sure there was going to be a headache at the end of the day or night.

She was a scrawny looking girl mostly due to the conditions she had just come from, but her smile was bright enough to wash over the image of a tired soldier. "Yeah. Was raised on a cattle ranch on Verbena. Had t' use 'em a few times durin' th' War too when we couldn't get th' skiffs unfrozen. What do you ride? Western or English?"

[identity profile] captain-jtk.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
"Western, of course. I'm from Iowa, in the former United States on Earth. I've never done any cattle herding, but riding horses is a favorite past-time of mine," Kirk's smile was rather dazzling in of itself.

[identity profile] browncoatdevil.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
"....Did you just say Earth?"

The look that washed over Gwen's face was a mixed of stunned disbelief. Of course, being on the ship should have been enough to settle that for her right then and there, but she couldn't help but stuff her hands in her pockets once more watching the older man in pure.. well she wasn't sure what she was thinking now. "Earth-that-was?"

[identity profile] captain-jtk.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
"Of course! It's not really called 'Earth-that-Was', but it is home to humanity," Kirk replies with a smile. Her look gives him pause and it takes him a moment to put two and two together - Earth is gone in her universe, perhaps.

"Why do you ask?"

[identity profile] browncoatdevil.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
The red head shifted slightly, torn between wanting to just blurt it out and half not wanting to say anything. Wedge didn't even know about her world, and this man was from Earth or something like it. Biting down on her bottom lip the Lieutenant shrugged her shoulders ever so slightly almost looking like a kid whose hand was caught in the cookie jar.

"Earth's been gone a long time. Round five hundred years or so. It got used up so we left it." Green eyes flickered back up to the Captain before she finally raised a hand to scratch at the back of her neck. "Just a little stunned 's all. Ain't something you hear every day."

[identity profile] captain-jtk.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Kirk smiled warmly at the young woman, "Well... it was beautiful place. Is a beautiful place. From the way you describe it, it sounds like... well, a lot like our early history. We were using up our planet's resources and we were on the brink of self-annihilation when we discovered faster-then-light travel. And we expanded into the stars."

His eyes glamed as he recounted his people's history. It was always such an impressive feat to him - to return from near extinction to a prominent member of the galactic community, "We repaired the planet. It's our home, to this day."

[identity profile] browncoatdevil.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
"We got space travel. Nothin like a FTL drive. That's.. ah.. still a little to science fiction for us." Ducking her head a little she couldn't help the blush that was slightly bubbling up at having to use the word. Really. Kirk wouldn't believe how people still wanted for something better but the reality was it wasn't happening yet. "We finally stopped when they gave up on findin' anything other than rocks an' stars. Terraformed a while buncha planets... we spread out over five systems now. More 'n fifty worlds and moons are hospitable 'nough for life. "

Her smile softened a little as well. "'s good t' hear that at least someone made it work. Some say that Shadow an' Hera were as close t' Earth that they could be.. until the Alliance destroyed 'em."

[identity profile] captain-jtk.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
"It'll come in time. Human ingenuity has never ceased to amaze me. Nor has it ever failed me," Kirk chuckled, recalling the time he'd been forced to rig a primitive cannon to protect himself from a Gorn. He nodded, patting Gwen on the shoulder, "I'm glad to hear that. Humanity survives, even if they have to colonize other worlds to do it."

He frowned slightly as her expression fell, curiosity piqued, "Shadow? Hera? What happened to them? Surely this Alliance didn't obliterate them for some arbitrary reason?"

[identity profile] browncoatdevil.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
She shifted under his gaze. One foot to the other before letting out a rush of a held breath through her nose. "Hera was one of our worlds, Independent, and one of th' first to break from the Alliance. I mean they had ignored us for years an' once we started doin' well for ourselves they wanted what we owed 'em and then some. Just don't rightly expect they thought so many would value freedom that much.."

"They bombed Shadow. Nukes.. other heavy weapons of world destroyin' classes. Didn't give a gorram hell if there were folk on the planet or not. It's a dust bowl now." Gwen hadn't known anyone on Shadow though a few of the people she served with were from there. Most of them were dead now along with their entire culture. "Hera is.. well 's where we were makin our last stand. They were bombin' the hell outta us. Said they'd waltz right through Serenity Valley. We showed 'em though. Been holdin' a week straight before I woke here."

Casualty rates were out of the roof. If Kirk knew his history, comparing Gettysburg to Serenity Valley would be appropriate. "'s why I ain't a fan of military run dictatorships and am leery of most civilian run ones at that."

[identity profile] captain-jtk.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
"I see..." Kirk listened quietly, a frown creasing his features. The very idea that humans still made war on one another was startling - it was true, there were still isolated incidents, but for the most part, Starfleet and the Federation had unified humanity. And they certainly didn't try to destroy whole worlds - that was a barbaric practice, that they avoided whenever possible.

He put a hand on her shoulder with a nod, "I'm sorry. The very idea of destroying a whole world from orbit - it's repugnant. The Federation values individual freedoms and rights very highly."

[identity profile] browncoatdevil.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
"You keep talkin' 'bout this Federation. What is it?"

The human race never would change. There would always be someone, sometime, that would want to change things or rule over others. It was human nature to build then destroy and rebuild again. The hand upon her shoulder was oddly comforting and felt like a heavy weight all at the same time. One deep breath and the woman was smiling again, albeit a schooled expression. "Ain't no reason t' be sorry, sir. 's just how the hand is dealt sometime."

[identity profile] captain-jtk.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
"The Federation?" Kirk clicked his tongue and gave her one last reassuring pat before withdrawing his hand, "The Federation is short for the United Federation of Planets. Over one hundred and fifty member worlds, with thousands of colonies, made up of species from all over the Alpha Quadrant. We work together to better ourselves and keep ourselves safe. To explore the galaxy. To boldly go where no man has gone before."

He paused, grinning, "And Starfleet is the military and exploration fleet of the Federation."

[identity profile] browncoatdevil.livejournal.com 2010-01-03 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
"Military an' exploration. That sounds a little..." Gwen let her words fade off, a little teasing smile crossing her face as she watched the Captain. It sounded to much like a Utopian society which, in her opinion, had its good pieces and its bad.

Quirking an eyebrow slightly she let the smile grow a little more throwing in a wink for good measure. "Sounds nice though. I rightly just can't seem t' picture a world without all th' fussin' an' fightin' though. Guess I'm just spoiled."

[identity profile] captain-jtk.livejournal.com 2010-01-04 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
"It is... well, it was quite exciting. I was in the middle of a five-year mission when I was pulled here," he explains, gesturing out at the stars, "Boldly seeking out new live and civilization."

Kirk shrugs, his smile turning wry, "Well, we have our problems. But I like to think that the human race and the Federation can move on. We still have to make war from time to time, after all."
