Time for the 'meat' and greet

[NOTE: This takes place DURING the holiday plot. If your character is involved in that, then they're still on the surface and not on the ship at this time.]

The rest of the crew assembled on the Observation Deck to meet the latest editions to their numbers. After the revelation that their worlds are gone, many of them are even more eager to see people they knew from home.

Several people are set up near the doors to provide the new people with omnicoms and comm rings.

There's a lot to tell the new people. It's going to be a lot to take in.

[ooc: Only new characters and Command Staff can start new threads for introductions, to limit the number of threads. Everyone else, just tag in and have your guys greet the newbies. The mission is still going on, so if your character is offship, they won't be around for this.]

No, he wasn't going to listen.

"If you don't have full records then you're not the one in charge," Dustin sneered, "Therefore I don't have time for you and your ignorant banter. Why don't you make yourself useful and go fetch the real guy in charge?"

Kirk narrowed his eyes, sizing up Dustin again, "The only one who has access to the full records of those in podsleep is Stacy. How many times am I going to have to repeat myself. We've just wrested control of this ship from pirates and we're doing our best to find out as much as we can about this ship, who's aboard, and what we can do to get back on track. Now, if you don't like that, that's fine, but I will not allow you to disrupt the crew or to cause trouble. This is a matter of life and death, mister."

“Would you quit talking to me like you’re my mother?” Dustin huffed, “Or am I going to have to start regarding you as such?”

He answered that question for himself.

“Well fine, mom, though my intentions were never to go out and slaughter everyone who looked at me funny,” he raised an eyebrow—a task that might’ve looked laborious due to its caterpillar-like consistency, “But is there nobody here who can access Stacy’s mainframe? Honestly, it’s just an AI, it couldn’t be that difficult. Just get some programmers there in its brain, give it a little annoying virus to keep it company, then find what you need and get out of there!”

That speech might’ve come off as oddly rehearsed.

"I'll talk to you like you're a responsible adult when you begin acting like one," Kirk retorted, "Not demanding information that I don't have and I can't give you. I don't think that you fully understand what Stacy is. She is a incredibly advanced artifical intelligence. She runs this ship. She has her own personality. She's a sentient being. Even if I was inclined to simply disassemble her or rip the information straight out of her brain - which I'm not - she would react with hostility and I'm not prepared to risk the lives of this crew on the off-chance that we could successfully penetrate her defenses. All in all, she's been helpful to us."

Dustin snarled. It was an angry expression, one filled with hate and contempt.

“Tell me, Kirk,” he growled through gritted teeth, “How afraid were you when you first woke up on this ship? How absolutely, mind-bogglingly confused were you? And how much did you cry for your loved ones when you realized that you couldn’t find them—how frustrated did that make you feel? Did you not even question what people were telling you? Didn’t you feel even an ounce of anger towards those that couldn’t provide what you needed?”

Yes, he would let that sink in, too.

“So don’t tell me that I’m acting out of line! I’m only questioning the things that the rest of you, for whatever reasons, have failed to take action for! And goddammnit, if I have to I’ll figure them out for myself and your lazy, pansy-ass command crew! If you were really dedicated enough, then you wouldn't care about some AI that's been 'sweet' to you, and you'd be willing to risk a few lives instead of cowering like a puppy that's been scolded for taking a piss on the nice furniture!"

Kirk's gaze turned into a cold, steely glare, "Don't you lecture me, mister. Our choice of actions is limited. We cannot take apart Stacy without crippling this ship or losing lives. Lives that, you're quite correct, I am not prepared to sacrifice for little or no gain. We've already lost people simply wresting control of this ship back from the pirates who'd hijacked it. We lost several thousand people who were in podsleep when they released a biological weapon into the lower decks. We have been taking action and we are doing the best we can with what we have. I know you're angry, I know you're confused, but by God, I will not allow you to lecture me or anyone else on this command crew about what we have or have not done. You may feel perfectly fine wasting lives, but we are not."

He folded his arms, keeping his eyes locked on Dustin, "Now, you can either accept that we're the ones in charge at the moment or you can work by yourself - but the moment you threaten a crew member or the safety of the crew, I will have you thrown in the brig! Do I make myself clear Mister Dustin?"

The "You and what army" response was close to the tip of his tongue, but Dustin wouldn't give him that benefit. Kirk obviously had enough people behind him that he had the balls to threaten others for jail time, of all things, so that would just do him in for sure.

Instead, Dustin took advantage of the fact that he knew he was getting under this guy's skin, and decided to tilt the scale in his favor.

"Well then, I guess that's what makes us different, eh?" the man kept a level gaze, emerald eyes cold underneath his thick mass of hair and heavy brow, "Clearly working with you would only slow me down."

Dustin turned his head—yes, Kirk, you're being snubbed, and quite plainly at that.

"I'll see you and your pretty smile on the outside, Shitface."

Kirk sighed and shook his head, "Think what you like. I've done nothing but tell you the truth. Working by yourself won't get you anywhere. There's no outside to get to, there's nothing out there but space."

He paused, "And the difference between you and me is that I value the lives of those I work with far more then you apparently do."

Dustin's walking off now. Bye, Kirk. I hope you enjoy being ignored.
