Hail the Conquering Heroes

Things can happen without Stacy knowing, that much is apparent now. The damage to her sensors is significant. But the fighting clued her in.

After it's all over, after those captured have been rescued, after the injured have been tended to, only the nest is left, and Stacy takes care of it.

||Infestation of Cluster 42, Level 4, Sector 7, Sublevel 12, Zone 37 has been detected. Triggering internal defenses. Decontamination commencing.||

There is a pause.

||Decontamination complete.||

Simple as that, once she knows the problem was there. Her internal sensors are damaged, especially in the city, and so are some of the systems monitoring them. You have to know what's broken to know to fix it.

Such a simple thing and it only took one man dying to make it happen. (His body is gone, by the way, ripped to shreds and eaten. There's not even a spot of blood on the floor. That's the bugs' doing. The bugs' bodies are gone too--that's Stacy's doing).

||Any injured personnel that still have not received medical attention, report to the nearest lift, and you will be transported to the MedBay. Any uninjured personnel, report to the Living Area, to the restroom facilities to undergo decontamination of xenobiological material. Then report to the Obs Deck to meet your new crew-mates.||

Said crew-mates--and the Doctor, who'd skipped out and miraculously ducked and weaved his way to the lift when he'd realized the Master was there--are there and waiting, and just a tad confused.

"Well actually, I'm -" Will pauses. Okay, the secret identity is completely busted. She might as well roll with it. "I'm from Heatherfield, California, but I go there sometimes because my friend is the queen there." She holds out her hand too. "I'm Will. I like your hair."

Pixie giggled. "Aww, that's cool! So it's like a fairy land or something?" She smiles. "Thanks! I like yours too!"

"More of a troll . . . ogre . . . monster-person and sometimes fairy land," Will clarified, brushing a strand of said hair out of her eyes, which widened in surprise. "Really? You think -"

She looked at the hand brushing back her hair, and remembered which form she was in. "Oh. Yeah - well, I don't always look this way . . ."

With her other hand, she palmed the Heart out into the open behind her back and powered down. Suffused with a gentle glow, her form shifted from that of the tall, proud, pixie-winged Guardian into a younger, slightly plainer, more nondescript human girl.

"This is what I look like normally," she said, tilting her head down sheepishly.

"Ohmygosh! You have a secret identity?" Pixie clapped. "That's totally classic! I so don't have that kind of an option." She pointed to her wings. "Those sprouted when I hit thirteen. At first I wanted to strap them down, but now I wouldn't trade them for anything."

"Oh gosh - really?" Will's eyes widened with sympathy. If she didn't have the option of keeping her wings secret, she didn't know what she'd do. "That's . . . " wait, no, Pixie liked them now. But "now" was the key word there, wasn't it? "That must have been hard," she said, still sympathetic. "I'm glad you're okay with them now, though. Are you . . ." oh gosh, it sounded so silly. "Are you a superhero too?"

"It kind of was at first. Like a lot. But then I went to this school and...well...things are totally better now," she grins. Sure, she'd lost some of her innocence - literally by offering her soul to another mutant - but in spite of everything, she was still Pixie, sparkly and tall. "I was gonna ask you the same thing," she giggled. "I'm a hero in training, sort of. Like, I'm still learning how to use my powers and stuff."

"I WISH I had a magic school." Will rolls her eyes. "I just get the usual - history and math and no pixie dust at all." She heaves a long-suffering sigh. "And now my mom's dating my history teacher!"

It's all too much to bear. She rolls her eyes again.

"I'm not really a hero-in-training . . . well, actually, now we sort of have a trainer." She thinks of Orube, demanding and foreign. "But my friends and I have already been heroes a couple of times. We sort of just . . . got given our powers and thrown out the door. But we've done okay."

None of them are dead! That Will knows of.

"It's not really a magic school," Pixie says, honestly. "We're this thing called mutants? It's kind of like...we're genetically different from most humans, so when we hit puberty, along with all the fun stuff that puberty brings, we also get powers. Everyone gets kind of different ones, too." SHe smiles. "Wow. A mom dating a teacher...that's either really cool or really awkward."
