Get you Gone

The meeting is over, the teams have been assigned, the plans have been laid out. It's time to get weapons.

It's time to wish each other luck, and say goodbyes--with the hope that they're only "good bye for now"s.

It's about to get very hairy from here on out.

"Really? A whole war? Of an entire world?"

Because HIS world war has taken a lot longer than this.

"He's filling your head with lies" Static said as he waltzed up. "The second world war took a good six years, give or take. He just feels like being dramatic 'cause he wants to skip to the part where he kills things." Static smiled. "He's a romantic like that."

"Nothin' wrong with wantin' ta skip ta the part where I kill things." Slobo said gruffly. "Especially if it means gettin' away from all this mushy 'goodbye' crap. People are treatin' it like we're all doomed." He looked at Static with a grim smile.

"Some of us here know that on these kinda things, usually only one or two people die."

"I don't like having the time to think about it either."

What? His girlfriend is involved in all this. No mushy good-byes there. If he's going into danger, so is she . . . and that carries its own set of worry.

"That's kinda the point, Slo. Alright, look at it this way: If you had the chance to say 'goodbye' to Secret right before the whole Darkseid thing, wouldn't you have wanted to? Most of these people are going off with the chance they're gonna die, and they have people here to say goodbye to 'cause they care. Me, everyone I care about is going into the fray with me, so the closest I've got is to tell Jaime he's not gonna screw up and tell Katara to watch my back. But other people, not people like us? They actually care."

For a moment, just a moment, it appears as if Slobo's eyes had turned a crimson red as he quickly, to use Dakota City vernacular, got all up in Virgil's grill.

"Don't. EVER. Talk. About. Her. To. Me." He met Virgil's gaze with his death glare. After a moment, he calmed and turned to Zuko, shaking off the anger.

"Ya don't gotta worry about sayin' yer goodbyes or who might get hurt. Yer hangin' with the combined might o' Young Justice and the Titans now. The only times we let people die around us are when it's their choice. And even then we do our damnedest to protect 'em. RIGHT, Static?"

Zuko just watches as Slobo has his bout of anger.

"I don't plan on saying goodbye to anyone today."

Not that he doesn't believe death is a possibility.

He just doesn't really want to consider it.

Static's eyes flashed with lightning for a second. "Low blow, Chalky. Low. Blow."

"Then we're even, Shocky. I won't push yer buttons if ya get what mine are and avoid 'em." In truth, Slobo had just been trying to bolster Zuko's confidence. But with everything that had happened in his head the night before, he was glad to take advantage of whatever was bothering Virgil to keep from thinking about Greta. Now he turned his attention to Zuko again.

"That's a good attitude, but ya gotta be less grim about it. Maybe even make it inta an epic catchphrase. Like..." He lowered his voice into a harsh, Batman-esque growl. "'The only ones who will need to have said their goodbyes are my enemies.' Somethin' like that." He grinned, trying to bring levity in his own special way.

Zuko raises an eyebrow. "Catchphrase? Are you joking?" He really can't tell.

In case you couldn't tell, grim is kind of this kid's thing, Slobo.

"Slo's no good at phrases and wit. See, batman's got his "I am the night" and spider-man's got his "friendly neighborhood spider-man", but all he has is the words 'frag' and 'bastiches'. A real catch has to describe a deeper part of you; for instance, I'll put a shock to your system." Static made a spark jump on his hand as he said it and smiled. "It just describes a part of your being in a way that...feels right." Joking or not, this was superheroics 101. Without a catch, you're nothing.

"I got more than frag an' bastiches. I'm the Top Fraggin' Teen!" Slobo said defiantly. "And yeah, I'm jokin'. Iunno, I was born in a fight, 'died' in a fight, and pretty much did nothin' but fight inbetween. Takin' it seriously would be sappin' the enjoyment outta my life. Ya dig, Firebrand?" That's right, Slobo came up with a nickname even for Zuko.

There are worse ones. He could have gone with "Sparky."

Zuko's a little busy looking alarmed by Static's lightningfingers to object, at any rate.

"Yeah, fine. I'd rather you didn't," is all he says, backing up from Static slightly. Somebody who can snap their fingers and produce lightning is somebody whose power he doesn't want to see the wrong side of.

Seriousness. It's what he does.
