Get you Gone

The meeting is over, the teams have been assigned, the plans have been laid out. It's time to get weapons.

It's time to wish each other luck, and say goodbyes--with the hope that they're only "good bye for now"s.

It's about to get very hairy from here on out.

"[Promise me that you're going to be safe,]" Jonas said quietly from behind her. He was worried; probably more than necessary, really. This was Cassie, the most important person in his life. He had a right to worry, did he not?

Cassie stowed her handgun into her plantsuit pocket. "Of course." She knew that there was no way she could promise that for sure but...

But it didn't matter, because she wasn't going to die. She could take care of herself.

"Don't worry, O.K.? I'll be fine."

"[It is my prerogative to worry,]" Jonas said, his mouth quirking a little. He reached out and took her hands, giving them a gentle squeeze. "[But I know that you are good at this sort of thing. And I will be watching your back.]"

Cassie squeezed his hands back. "You're coming too?" That would make her feel so much better.

"[That is the plan,]" Jonas said, smiling a little. "[Between my ability to interface with technology and all of my other powers, it seems that I would be more useful on the bridge than staying behind.]"

"And then you wouldn't have to just take my word for it that I'd be careful." Cassie smirked. She made a note to actually make an effort to be more careful this time because if she didn't Jonas would know. And then he could yell at her.

Jonas smirked back. "[I suppose I would.]"

He pulled her close and wrapped his arms around her, gazing seriously into her eyes for a moment before kissing her.

"[I...]" He paused. He did not want to say "I love you", because they were both going to survive this. But then, he did want to say "I love you", because it was true. It wasn't a goodbye. "[I love you. We are both going to get through this all right. Us and Kate and Billy.]"

"We are. Don't worry." Cassie lightly pressed her lips against his. "I love you too." And then kissed him again, not so lightly this time.

She tried not to think about the many ways things could go wrong.

Why bother when her boyfriend could think about all those ways and sort them into categories from most- to least likely to occur? Jonas shoved those thoughts away as well and kissed her back.
