Get you Gone

The meeting is over, the teams have been assigned, the plans have been laid out. It's time to get weapons.

It's time to wish each other luck, and say goodbyes--with the hope that they're only "good bye for now"s.

It's about to get very hairy from here on out.

Brenda's been looking for Brainy, nervousness knotting up her guts. She knows she's more help staying behind, she's said her death-grip-hug goodbyes and 'be careful or else's to Jaime and Paco already, and she gave Sean a slightly less tight hug and told him to be the best ninja he could be but not to short change himself in other areas too.

Brainy though... she's more worried about him than the others somehow. Jaime and Paco and Sean live in that illusory world in her head where 'everything will turn out okay because I said so'. They have Kahji Da and Ninja Training and Big Sticks.

But Brainy is like her, as vunerable as she is, so him ... she's got to see him and do what little she can to protect him before he leaves.

When she spots him she rushes over, calling his name.

"BRAINY!"

He's...surprised by the urgency in her voice. Koko looks up in surprise as well, matching his expression somewhat humorously.

"Brenda?"

"Jeez, I thought I wouldn't catch you before you headed out. I-"

She stalls for a second, fumbling over what she wants to say.

"I wanted to wish you good luck and... I wanted to give you something."

"Ah, I--you really needn't worry." He looks somewhat amused by the fact she is. "I deal with dire situations such as this regularly."

Yet, he does look...somewhat pleased she sought him out like this, even if she really had nothing to worry about--at least no more than usual.

"Yeah, well, Jaime does this regularly too but I still worry about him so you're getting worried about too." she says tersely, reaching in under the collar of her plantsuit and fidling with something at the back of her neck.

When the clasp finally unlatches she pulls out the thin gold chain and the tiny cross dangling from it. It wasn't something she had ever worn often back home, but it was the only personal item of her own she had still had upon arriving on Stacy and probably the only sentimental physical thing she had had at all back in El Paso.

She'd put it on in the weapons and storage locker her first day and not taken it off since.

"Keep this for me okay? I know it's just jewelry but... for my peace of mind?"

He recognizes the symbol--that particular religion has still survived somewhat to his time, as have a few others from Brenda's time, though in very different forms. The gesture is very sentimental and something he would have mocked years ago, but not now. Now, instead, the expression on his face is somewhat unfathomable.

"...You're giving it to me so that I'm obligated to return it." That's what she means by it, yes? "As, to return it, I would most certainly have to still be alive."

He's not sure what to make of this, and for a moment he seems a bit lost.

"Is it strictly your own, or does it hold some sort of sentimental value for you?"

"That's the idea." She gives him a small smile, unable to help being a little amused at how matter of factly he puts it.

She swallows hard when he asks about it's value.

"It was my Mom's." she says quietly, lifting her chin and sucking in a breath against tears welling up. "It's uhm... well it's the only thing I have from home here on the ship so... I don't even mind if you keep it, Brainy. I just want you to come back okay? I don't think I can take burying a friend like you on top of everything else."

Brenda smiles at him but it's strained, encouraging and desperate all at once.

Brainiac 5 wants to reassure her again that this is pretty much his bread and butter, but he's so overtaken by emotion that all he can do is open his mouth, and then snaps it shut, unsure of what to say, but then he settles for a soft: "Ah."

Not the most tactful, but it's neither positive or negative-sounding.

But if she's unclear at all of how he's feeling about it, the fact that he tucks it into one of the pockets of his plantsuit--which he then seals, making it so it will be even more difficult to lose--says something.

He snaps his fingers at Koko to get his attention.

"If you wouldn't mind horribly, I could use someone to care for Koko. He's also occasionally useful. You might perhaps have need for his assistance."

[identity profile] shes-intense.livejournal.com 2009-10-13 09:39 am (UTC)(link)
She watches him tuck it away and relaxes just a little. He didn't say much but that initial expression on his face was enough.

Brenda smiles when Brainy mentions the monkey and hold out her hand toward the little guy.

"Awww, you'd trust me with your monkey?" she says, beaming and clearly pleased. She's always been curious about Koko, truth be told. "Of course I can look after him."

[identity profile] cabbage-butt.livejournal.com 2009-10-13 09:44 am (UTC)(link)
Koko hops to her arm with only a minimal amount of urging and them climbs up to her shoulder, staring at her for a moment. Then, as if he's just sized her up and found her to be okey-dokey, he starts to mess with her hair.

"Of course."

He'd trusted her with very personal information, after all.

"Well, I suppose I should be going to congregate with the others..."

Brenda hesitates just a second more, then steps a little closer to gives him a quick firm hug around the shoulders.

"This'll be just a walk in the park for someone who saved all of time. Just... be careful anyway. I'll see you when you get back."

Brainiac...actually hugs her back, if briefly, and during the hug there is a brief gentle touch of his hand to the center of her back.

Anyone that thinks Brainiac 5 is an unfeeling, arrogant prude might realize they only have two out of three right, if they see it. Unfeeling? Not at all. He misrepresents himself horribly, in that respect.

"Your situation could be perilous as well, so please...take care."

It feels...good to have someone to say this to, and to have someone to say it back. Usually, he's running right into the midst of the danger with the Legion, and they're the only ones that would.

Of course that means this comes with the emotional difficulties of worrying about someone, but it brings clarity to the importance of his mission--they must do what they need to do as quickly as possible, and try to prevent any possible negative consequences from occurring to the crew they leave behind.

Brenda squeezes him one more time before finally letting him slip away. Koko ducks in under her hair and pokes his head out around her opposite shoulder, making a worried chattering noise but eventually just hugging the side of her face.

"I'll be careful, don't worry." she promises, reaching up to stroke Koko's head soothingly.

"I'll see you soon."
