The Call

Jaime Reyes voice sounds over the comm-rings--all of them--and it sounds very urgent.

« Everyone on the ship, listen up! This is Jaime Reyes, your local 'Blowing this pop stand' coordinator and escape facilitation engineer. I need everyone on the ship to come to the City, in front of the Precinct, immediately. Grab people who don't have their comm rings with them--and tell them to grab their comm rings, people who are sleeping, whoever you find, and try to make sure everyone on the ship knows to come. This is very important. This is "getting the heck out of here" important. »

When they arrive, they arrive to find the Command Staff waiting, and a tiny, tiny young man standing on stone ledge from a fountain, waiting for them.

Here goes nothing.

As Static walked along, there was a guy, just standing there, looking slightly confused. "Hey man. How's it goin'? Name's Static." He waved his hand in the air to the guy.

Terry was a surprised by seeing Static here, but it was a nice sort of surprise. It was good to see a friendly face.

"Yeah, I know, Beyonce, right?" Terry said with a grin. He'd never found out Static's real name, but he'd always enjoyed their little inside joke. Sometimes the older Static of his time would go along with it.

"Beyonce?" Static twisted at the waist, checking his butt. "Well, I suppose I would look good in a dress. And I did have one of the best music videos of all time..." He shook his head. "Nah, wouldn't work. Can't hit her high notes. Anyway, it's nice to meet ya."

There was probably a good reason why he thought Static was Beyonce. Maybe where he comes from Beyonce's a 16 year old dude with lightning powers and an awesome coat?

This wasn't helping Terry's confusion. "What? Music video?" He racked his brain trying to figure out what all that meant. "Wait... are you talking about that singer from, what, fifty years ago? C'mon, Static, it's me, Batman, remember?"

Terry was starting to get a sinking feeling that this Static didn't know him. Maybe he was from further back in the past then the one he'd met. Or maybe this was more of that multiple-worlds thing. And why was he dealing with this now, in such a tense time?

In any case, Terry was really, really starting to hate time-travel.

Static sober. "I'm sorry, man. I mean, I know, like, six batman...men...mans? But, I don't think you're one of 'em. Maybe...we just haven't met yet?" He smiled a fake smile; he'd gotten used to no one knowing who he was, even though they'd been good friends before.. it sucked. A lot.

"I hate to say it, 'cause I know it sucks, but... start fresh? Virgil Hawkins, circa 2009." He held out his hand.

"...six?" Terry repeated. "Oh slag," he groaned, "slag, slag, slag. You're probably from one of those different universes." It was confirmed, Terry hated alternate universes.

Terry rubbed the back of his neck, sighing. He hated it, but he'd have to live with it. "Terry McGinnis," he said, sounding a bit defeated, as he shook Virgil's hand. "Batman, year 2053." It would be hard for him to have a fresh start, though, since Static was one of the few heroes that scared him when he was still in the old gang. Not as much as Batman would have, but, still, he'd been hearing about Static all his life. He didn't like knowing Static's real name, and almost wanted to call him 'Mr. Hawkins' out of respect.

"2053 Batman? That makes me...like..." Static started counting on his fingers. "Sixty. Dude, if I'm still alive at 60, I'm impressed. I mean, we seem to loose a Titan, like, every other week lately, so the odds are very much against me. Anyway, I hope I'm as cool in my universe as I must be in yours." He paused for a second. "I now know seven Bats. What're the odds?"

Terry still didn't get why everyone was so surprised that superheroes lived long. Maybe he was just spoiled on all the advanced medicine of his time.

"Sixty, huh? Wow, I always thought you were younger. In my time, you don't really look sixty. Then again, Superman doesn't really look eighty." It probably had something to do with the superpowers. Terry could be envious of that, but between seeing The Three die the way they did and living a day as part vampire bat, he'd decided he never wanted powers.

"Seven Bats..." Terry kept getting hung up on that. "In my world, I was only the second. Jeez, I wonder what happened to the ol' man in your world to need six of us."

"Umm.. well, there the original. Then there was the guy who made the metal suit when B-man was out of commision for awhile," he started keeping track on his fingers, "Then there was Tim as Batman when he came from the future, Jason Todd took the mantle when BM died, then Nightwing took it from him because he's a psycho, there's that Batman who was supposedly from another earth that killed people with guns (which I always thought was BM's big no-go, but hey, he used one on Darkseid, so I guess I'm an idiot), and then there's you. Seven bats. None operating at the same time, of course. That'd kill the whole 'urban legend' thing he has going on." He took a deep breath, realizing he'd just sped through that whole thing.

There was something about this Batman that was different than the others; something...approachable. "You know, you don't really look like a Batman. Do you, like, wear a different mask or something?"

Sure, it was confusing that other people had been Batman - not because Terry was used to thinking he was the only other one, but more because he'd grown up in a world without Batman - but for the most part, it made sense. Except for the bit about Tim being Batman. That sent chills down Terry's spine.

"Different mask... yeah, you could say that. Whole new suit, actually. I've never even touched the old man's suit."

"Mm, it would have to be. I mean, by your time, his suits probably got more bullet holes than I can count. I mean, I've only been doing this for like a year and a half, but mine's already gotten a good dozen."
