Command Meeting [Closed to Command Staff]

After taking some much needed time to rest, collect their thoughts, gather information, plan, and work out the logistics of said plans, the Command Staff finally convened down in the city in the Basilica of St. Peter. The Vatican had served well as their meeting place before, so it made perfect sense to use it again. It was obviously large enough to house them all, and it was also quiet, since it seemed that the changes that had been made to the structure by a certain crew mate had led many crew members to avoid it.

There was much to be discussed. The fall-out from the battle over the Yeerk, what to do with the prisoners being held in the precinct, and--most importantly--the up-coming effort to breach Stacy's barriers, open up more of the ship, and deal with what lay in wait there.

Jean's expression turned from annoyance to grim and she shook her head. She wasn't surprised that she'd been ignored, but the fact that Sawyer of ALL people actually somewhat made sense... Well that didn't really make sense.

"How is this anywhere near a compromise? Leon stated what he thought should happen, and you went along with what he said. Wasn't this all suppose to show how we're judicially fair? How is holding Lyta for a few days to 'cool down' anywhere near judicially fair? Is this how it works in your Federation? Because if it is, it just cements my feelings on how much an awful idea it is to implement any more militaristic elements to the crew."

She stared at Leon and Picard in turn. "Besides, anyone who knows Lyta the slightest bit knows she won't cool down being locked up. If anything it'll just get her more and more angry

"The crew wants to get over this, need to get over this. And your decision? It's not going to let that happen. Keeping a crew member locked up for speaking their mind is going to send the rest of the crew the wrong idea! Not only is it telling them to keep their mouths shut, but it's also going to tell the younger ones that they can basically do as they please and all they'll get is a little bit of supervision as a result of their actions."

"I definitely don't think the kids should just get a slap on the wrists. They're getting probation AND community service, with their supervisors ensuring it happens along with their schoolwork. And if you're not releasing Lyta yet, then keep the kids locked up for longer. She's been in there too long already for nothing more than an exercise in civil protest."

"You know, I've just about had up to here with the implication that we're trying to establish some sort of... military dictatorship when we're just trying to do the job we were asked to do."

Kirk's brow is furrowed in a deep frown, "Being in command means making decisions that aren't always popular and doing what you believe is the correct thing to do. It's quite difficult enough as it is trying to get everyone to work together without people insinuating that the Federation takes after the Third Reich, which I can assure you it does not, Miss Grey. That being said..."

Kirk huffed and let out a deep breath, "...you are quite correct insofar as I am used to a military command structure. However, I do not believe that impairs my judgement enough to make it a detriment to the people aboard this ship. Regardless, the argument is about Lyta and the younger members involved in the attack. I agree with Mister Petrelli - they're being punished as appropriately as we can manage in this situation. If they'd taken it further, I would most likely be arguing for something more stringent - however, they did not."

He drummed his fingers against the table and then nodded slowly, "And as much as I believe that Miss Alexander chose the wrong place and time to voice her opinion - indeed, a very dangerous time, considering the security team was being held up at gunpoint - I do believe that Miss Grey is correct in saying that releasing Miss Alexander would help ease tensions amongst the crew at this point in time. Although under the laws of some universes and worlds, she is liable as an accomplice, like it or not we are not on one of those. We're a group of confused, scared people, trying to do our best. And unlike Mister Winchester, she did not actively participate. Releasing her does seem to be the sensible thing to do at this point."

He glanced around the table, "Captain Picard? Mister Kennedy? Miss Grey? Everyone? Your thoughts?"

"I agree that Lyta needs to be released. She didn't do anything, and if speaking out of turn is a crime, than nearly maiming and killing a crew member, and nearly causing a negligent death--if not for an illusion--should be considered one, too. Even the scarab thinks you're not giving him a fair punishment in comparison. If you're going to deal with outbursts with a heavy hand, fine, but at least be even-handed about it. Find a punishment for me and Khaji Da, too, for the actual damage we caused. I mean, Khaji cut Sam's Achilles tendon, and he had to go into surgery and you let us go?"

He goes on, "As for community service, considering I want Katara and Robin on my team, that's their community service--risking life and limb to get the crew off this ship. What I need to them to do will be incredibly dangerous, and while I'll be giving them a choice, obviously, I know them both well enough that they'll choose to do it."

The Chief exhales. He's not even going to address the mess that is ship government. He feels like he doesn't belong in that subject, despite his rank. He's not cut out for that.

"Lyta," he says, "tried to talk. And after that, she stood down. I've seen what she can do and have no illusions that things would've turned out the same if she hadn't."

Telepaths. Metas. Supers. It's all weird to the Chief, and he has a heavy respect for it. Anything that can so vastly outclass him is serious.

"I say we let her out. She did less than most of the others. As far as the kids, I trust Robin and Katara and whatever we need from them should be worth what they did. Whether or not they want to do it isn't important, it's still neck-risking for the rest of us."

He looks at Jaime last. "Do you want put in a cell for a few days? We can worry about you and Khaji having a guilty conscience after you've done your job, Reyes. Anything else, and we're shooting ourselves in the foot."

Leon simply gave Jaime a look, but shook his head a bit in disappointment. He needs to stop thinking in the abstract. But now wasn't the time for that discussion.

"As far as the prisoners, I've stated my opinion and made my recommendations. I don't feel the need to repeat myself. But as far as I'm concerned, I work for the Senior staff, not with them. I'm waiting on you to make a final decision. If you have orders, I'll obey them, regardless of personal opinion." Professionalism, people. Some of you need to learn it. "If you don't make a final decision, I'll use my own discretion. Beyond that, I have nothing further to offer." But at least he was clear where he stood.

No, he was just making a point about fairness. He wants Lyta released, not to be imprisoned.

"No, I--you know what? New plan: I'm gonna stop talking now."

Before he puts his foot in his mouth anymore.

"Very well," Picard said, "Miss Alexander will be released along with Miss Katara and Mister Drake. Miss Katara and Mister Drake will be released into the custody of their families, while members of the senior crew serve as 'parole officers', gauging the situation and determining when their observed statuses can be rescinded. Mister Kennedy, make it so. Are there any concerns regarding the rest of the crew currently being held? Mister Winchester, Miss Bricker, and the like?"
