A House Divided [Part 3]
[Instructions: Here.]
Despite a few tricks up their sleeves, the Conspirators hardly stood a chance. It's all or nothing as they make a few last ditch attempts to kill the Yeerk, and as the fight grinds to a screeching halt.
Will they kill the Yeerk?
Will someone other than the Yeerk get killed in the crossfire?

Stage 1 - The End?
Re: Stage 1 - The End?
Re: Stage 1 - The End?
He pulls out a batarang and takes careful aim.
Re: Stage 1 - The End?
"Stand down, Robin."
Re: Stage 1 - The End?
He looks down, frowning at the batarang on the ground. Yeah. He really screwed up.
Re: Stage 1 - The End?
A hand goes to Tim's shoulder, "I failed you. I should have been here."
Re: Stage 1 - The End?
"I'm sorry," he says finally.
Re: Stage 1 - The End?
"We'll discuss it later. We need to tend to the wounded."
Re: Stage 1 - The End?
Oddly, not in any particular direction. It's less like she's kicking it to anyone else, and more like she's just...getting it away from Robin, as if she wants to completely get that temptation out of his face.
She's breathing hard, and she looks up at Tim--and Batman--and then just sits there on the ground, physically and emotionally spent.
People are hurt. No one was meant to get hurt.
Re: Stage 1 - The End?
He looks down at Leela with a very small smile. Neither of them had wanted things to go down this way, but they had, and now they're going to have to try to work through the consequences.
He offers her a hand to help her to her feet. "C'mon. There are hurt people who need help."
Re: Stage 1 - The End?
She's done. It's out of her hands now, at least.
Re: Stage 1 - The End?
He hoisted the grav gun to fetch a large rock to send toward his team leader.
"Nothing personal, just business," he yelled as he fired.
Re: Stage 1 - The End?
Luckily, he's used to dodging rocks, and dived into a building to avoid being hit. Unfortunately, the rock was now blocking the entrance... Leon was going to have to find another way around.
Re: Stage 1 - The End?
Sam was in the midst of cursing himself for not gaining more ground on Leon than he had when a boulder came flying in from out of nowhere and force the Chief of Security to halt his pursuit of the Yeerk. Seizing the opportunity, Sam charged forward, his sights set on the metallic ball that now lay on the ground....
Re: Stage 1 - The End?
He drops in front of him so quickly the asphalt cracks. There is no talking, though, there is no cheerful Jaime. He's not ragingly angry, it burns just under the surface. There's something...righteous about his anger. It isn't hateful, it isn't fueled by the bitterness of betrayal. It's something that's simmering hot, but controllable, rooted entirely in his desire to protect other people.
People got hurt.
People got hurt.
Sam is thwacked in the stomach so hard he slams into the wall of the building about ten feet away. Not hard enough to seriously injure him, but enough to really shake him and knock the wind out of him. Only then does Blue Beetle speak.
"I said that what we both had in common was that we both didn't want to see innocent people get hurt. When you agreed with me, was that a lie or are you just really, really bad at following your own words?"
Re: Stage 1 - The End?
Sam's back slammed against the wall, forcing the air from his lungs and winding him.
"No," he croaked, staring at Jaime. It wasn't a lie. Ensuring that people didn't get hurt was the reason he was down here, the reason he'd left his cell, the reason he was doing this to begin with. He hadn't wanted the fight. But he hadn't run from it either. Not when it meant risking Schmuz getting free and picking up where he and his friends left off....
"I wasn't lying. And I never wanted this. No more than you did."
Re: Stage 1 - The End?
"We're taking the slug out."

There is a thud.
Then, muffled by the boulder:
"ow."
It's good that's all he can say at the moment, though, or he might have pointed out how much more productive it would have been to squish the Yeerkball. Which would've been counterproductive to his protecting it.

Leon had found a way out, and now found his way into a position behind Xander, and pistol-whipped him in the back of the skull. Hard.
"And for the record, that was personal."
He didn't bother staying there long, as he was already on the move towards Sam and the Yeerk.
"Reyes! Can you hear me? I'll get you out of there in a moment."
First he had to deal with Sam.

"Leon, I don't think--you can lift--a boulder--"
But Jaime could blast through it.
"Stand clear!"
Blue cracks appear in it and it explodes, though its blast radius isn't very far, and then he's up again, rather quickly, and launches himself towards Sam, because Leon will get there, but he's not getting there before Sam snags the Yeerkball.
Most of the conspirators are standing down or hurt. It's down to Sam, really.
It's always been down to Sam.
"You have a funny way of not hurting people, Sam. Hurting them to help them--are you from some weird version of Bizarro World? Is that how it works there?"
He's being a little rough, but this makes him mad.
"I hate to do this. I don't want to fight you. But this isn't about doing what's easy--it's about doing what's right."
Jaime wants to make Sam feel more banged around than he actually is. Knock the wind out of him. Not cause any real damage while he's doing it. That's why lifts him up off the ground by his collar, flies towards the wall again, and slams him back against it, pinning him there, intending to do so until Leon can cuff him.
Despite it being relatively innocuous, this is what turns out to be the grand mistake of the evening.

He's got the Yeerk in his hands, again. But Jaime's on him again. He doesn't stand a chance against the teenager. Sam knew he never did. He had the Yeerk, but it didn't matter. Jaime wouldn't let him kill it. And Leon was only moments away. Like they said, people were hurt. Hurt because Sam and the others had tried to protect them. And they hadn't let them. And now, the Yeerk would survive anyway. Schmuz would live. And all those people that were hurt were hurt for nothing.
Anger + Terror + Desperation = Bad things, especially when it comes to Sam Winchester.
It happens in seconds. It's almost instinctual. Something he can do but can never control.
Another powerful wave of energy, telekinetic energy, the second of the battle slams into Jaime, sending the Blue Beetle hurtling into the air and crashing into a building.
Sam didn't mean to. He didn't how he did it. He never did know how. He. Just. Did.

"F*@#!" Sam curses when the blade slices through his flesh and embeds itself in his left shoulder.
He doesn't think twice. He doesn't even move to remove the sharp metal from his body. Sam swiftly lifts his Beretta and starts emptying the clip at Leon.
