Mix-and-Mingle

After the most recent pod-pop had been completed, Stacy began encouraging the crew towards the Obs Deck. They would be most effective if they were familiar with each other, and as the Jaime Reyes Incident had proved, leaving them to meet whenever they happened to cross paths was not effective.

Anyone who stepped into the Hub would be transported to the Obs Deck, no matter where they had intended to go. Those who had been exploring the City were verbally herded towards the Hub, although the energy tentacles did not make an appearance.

||Please report to the Obs Deck for Crew Introductions.||

The Obs Deck hadn't changed very much since they'd last been there. The creepy sculpture was still present, as were the fleshy couches. However, the couches were arranged in a more obvious circle this time.

Come and meet the new -- and in some cases, weirder -- members of your crew.

There was a strangely pretty teenage boy with his nose pressed up against one of the windows. Like all Andalites, Ax was claustrophobic, and being squeezed through the tubes of the Hub had been exceedingly uncomfortable.

The emptiness of space outside the windows of the Obs Deck wasn't exactly preferable, but focusing on that allowed him a chance to recenter himself.

[identity profile] fluffinasuit.livejournal.com 2008-07-27 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Not precisely claustrophobic himself, but also definitely not fond of being held with little chance of escape, the Doctor found a great deal of comfort in the stars.

Wandering over to stand by the boy, he stuck his hands in pockets that he'd spent a couple hours convincing his uniform to have. "Makes you wonder where we're going, doesn't it?"

He glanced over and smiled before turning back to the view. "I'm the Doctor, by the way. Resident token alien. Well, resident token alien crew member."

Pause. "Well, I suppose maybe not resident token alien crew member. Maybe just a resident alien crew member. Dunno, haven't talked to everyone yet."

[identity profile] mynameisax.livejournal.com 2008-07-27 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Ax's head snapped around to inspect the Doctor closely.

"You do not appear alien," he said, a little suspiciously. The man looked human, but openly identifying himself as an alien was not Yeerk behavior. "Uh-puh. Puh. Peer."

[identity profile] fluffinasuit.livejournal.com 2008-07-28 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
"No, I suppose I don't. Or, actually, they appear like us. Me. They appear like me. All has to do with Rassilon and the fact that my species came first."

The Doctor got back on track, pulling out a stethoscope and offering it to Ax. "Two hearts, bit of a tell-tale sign. One among a plethora of others. Plethora! Pleth-or-a, there's a fun word. From the Greek, of course, though really, French is more fun."

"Do you speak French?"

[identity profile] mynameisax.livejournal.com 2008-07-28 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Ax blinked at him in confusion, taking the proffered object and thinking for a moment.

"We are not from the same universe," he concluded, and relaxed somewhat. The oldest species that he was aware of bore a closer resemblance to dogs than to humans. And the Ellimist...well, no one knew what he actually looked like.

"I am...good with languages. Gwih. Gwages. Ez-zuh." Or at least, he had a translator chip, which would allow him to understand and speak the language, if he heard enough of it. "My name is Phillip. It is nice to meet you."

Now, if only he knew what he was supposed to do with the metal and rubber thing that the Doctor had just handed him.

[identity profile] fluffinasuit.livejournal.com 2008-07-28 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
The Doctor didn't bother explaining how to use it, working on the assumption that all humans knew what a stethoscope was.

"Oh, probably. Think most of us are, actually. Must need a good sampling or somesuch. Though, that doesn't really explain the high percentage of humans."

"Not that I don't love humans," he rushed to add. "Do, lovely species, one of my all-time favorites, which, you know, is saying something. But you're hardly the de-facto cream of the crop, are you? Plenty of much, much more powerful races out there. Well, I mean, they did pick me up, obviously, and you don't get much more powerful than a Time Lord. But there's such a focus on you lot, here. And I can't figure out why." He'd accidentally drifted off into seriousness there.

[identity profile] mynameisax.livejournal.com 2008-07-28 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
All humans might know what it was, but Ax's primary insight into human culture was television. And while there were soap operas set in hospitals, stethoscopes were primarily used as visual cues.

"Humans are a highly adaptable species. See. Spuh, spuh-see-zuh," Ax said, handing the stethoscope back to the Doctor. "Perhaps that is what Stacy requires at the moment, and the more powerful species are still in bio-stasis."

Lacaille had been spending an awful lot of time on the obs deck lately--roughly a third, in fact, give or take a few percentage points. Sure, there was a lot to take in here, and she was spending just as much time investigating that, if not more, but the stars were a much-needed comfort to her, blur by though they might.

She'd been lounging on one of the couches when the call came out, and swung her long, spindly legs over the side to pull herself upright, gripping the edge out of habit--a little time under gravity hadn't yet erased the habits created by years without it.

"Before we start anything I'd like to make known the fact that the food here sucks!" Wally said after he had sped into the Obs Deck.

[identity profile] likeapoison.livejournal.com 2008-07-29 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Pat frowned as he found himself in the Obs Deck again-he wasn't too fond of it. The combination of creepiness and the view didn't sit well with him.

Toxin, meanwhile, stuck his head out and peered around curiously, flicking a few tendrils idly.

Pat gave the tendrils a glance and warned, "Don't try to poke anybody," before going back to watching the rest of the obs deck.

Ah, the unexpected tribulations of pretending to be human. The Doctor was good at it up until someone touched him. Now the Time Lord wasn't even bothering; someone'd already called him out on it.

The Doctor put the stethoscope back in his pocket, trying very hard to remain calm. Not a more powerful species? Him? Hah! He made a face, answering carefully, "Ah, that could be true, yes, it could be. Quite possibly. Humans are very, very adaptable. Lots of great qualities, and as you said, adaptable. But then why am I out already? If they're saving the more powerful species for later?"

"I would think that you were intended to be the leader, if Prince Cybil had not been named captain," Ax said. Prince Cybil. Principle. The word-play still amused him a little. "Perhaps you are supposed to serve in an advisory capacity? Serr, ser-vuh."

He shrugged, a habit he'd picked up from his human friends. "I cannot guess Stacy's mind, nor the minds of who- or whatever programmed her. I am only a human teenager."

[identity profile] fluffinasuit.livejournal.com 2008-07-29 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, I suppose. That'd, that'd make sense. With the, well. I don't do violence," he explained. "Which apparently makes me the minority."

The Doctor scratched the back of his neck. "Ah, well, none of us can really form a correct assumption about what's going on, but I don't think that's stopping anyone from guessing. Half the fun! What fun there is."

[identity profile] mynameisax.livejournal.com 2008-07-30 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
The military cadet involved in guerrilla warfare against a space-faring empire shrugged in response. "Sometimes violence is a necessity. Other times it is not. Sometimes a reminder is needed. Ded. Nee-ded."

He scowled a little. "It is not much fun. I am needed back h-- where I was. I do not like this ship and I do not like the circumstances."

Zelgadis had not intended to end up here. Perhaps he was feeling obstinate, but he didn't feel like being ordered about by a disembodied voice. His intention had to keep searching for others, yes, but being dropped into the midst of a bunch of strangers was not his idea of a good time. It'd have been better to try and find people singly, to try and gauge the situation..

Except that when he tried to go back to the pod caverns to retrace his steps, he ended up dumped right out here, wherever here was. It wasn't a place he'd gotten to see before. Then again, he hadn't been free on the ship for that long, and it was massive. It was going to take forever to map this place out.

His first impulse was to try and climb right back into the transference device, though he had the feeling that such a thing was pointless. It was with a feeling of utter defeat that he stepped out, peering at the others from the corners of his eyes. For a moment he simply hung back, perhaps hoping nobody would even catch a glimpse of him, until he realized what he was looking at.

No, not the statue, or the couches, but windows beyond. The chimera found himself drawn towards one, fascinated and horrified all in one. "This.. is this the sea of chaos?" Yup. He was talking to himself now.

Terry was sure he wasn't dreaming now. The suit had been the deciding factor. A bit like pinching one's self, he had felt the tendrils, felt the strange fabric. The revelation had been accompanied by curiosity, wonder, and no end of panic. He had no idea where he was, and this thing, this living plant thing had his Bat gear.

He'd followed the voice's directions, though. He wasn't dead, but he felt a bit like a prisoner. Sort of like hostages at any bank job, he thought, 'do what I say and you won't be hurt'.

As he walked he barely looked at the city. But when he reached the Obs Deck, he saw two things that mentally floored him. First, the statue, looking and creepy. And second, all the people. His jaw dropped, and he just stood there, staring.

"Shway...."

Nathan had been around the city, but he came in when the announcement was placed. The statue caught his attention briefly, and like hell he was going to sit on those ugly creepy couches.

But the window....

"My God.... where the hell are we?"

"Ginnungagap," Wednesday murmurs from a bit behind Zelgadis. 'The earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep,' to quote. It's impressive to look at, isn't it?"

[identity profile] leather-bastard.livejournal.com 2008-07-30 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
A figure in leathery armor steps around the corner, and he pauses as he sees her.

"Ah. You must be one of our fellow crew pressed into service."

[identity profile] fluffinasuit.livejournal.com 2008-07-30 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
The idea of necessary violence just made the Doctor angry. But he'd had this fight several times already while he was here, and he was starting to get tired of it. "A reminder? Of what, of destruction? Of power? No, no, no. Or else everyone just ends up dead, the end, nothing more, just dead. Really dead."

"Everyone," he restated quietly, sadly. He hadn't had time to grieve, before he was abducted. The Master was dead, and according to that, that thing in that building, so was the TARDIS. At the moment there was nothing the Doctor wouldn't give to be allowed to just grieve.

[identity profile] mynameisax.livejournal.com 2008-07-31 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
"I meant that sometimes a reminder is needed that violence is not always necessary," Ax retorted. Cassie had always made a point to remind them so, sometimes to exasperating levels.

But he didn't want to talk about fighting and violence right now. Not too long before he had been taken, he had played chicken with Visser Two, a nuclear warhead, and his friends' hometown to prevent the Yeerks from instigating a nuclear war between the United States and China. He didn't need this Doctor to talk to him about how bad war was.

He turned and pressed his face back against the window. "Sary," he muttered to himself. "Nessessessary."

"There's also a really obnoxious AI in the building with all the statues," Paco added. He'd come up without too much prompting in the hopes that Brenda had scratched her way out of her pod -- where ever it was -- and would kill him less if she didn't have to hunt him down. "Not this room, but the one down where all the buildings are. Can we vote him off the ship?"

Connor and Murphy had been vaguely making their way to Obs at the insistence of Stacy, and, finally arriving, Connor voiced his opinions on their adventures thus far.

"This place is fuckin' weird!"

"Pressed into service? I guess you could say that."

Lacaille got to her feet, stumbling a bit as she tried to kick off the ground, got halfway through the motion, and remembered--oh yeah, gravity. With a slightly sheepish smile, she went on. "I haven't heard anything about what we're meant to be doing yet, though." She paused, giving him an appraising look, and noticed something a little bit off. "You're not in the biotech suit?"

[identity profile] fromtheraw.livejournal.com 2008-07-31 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
"My sentiments exactly," Leni groused. This was not where she'd asked to go when she'd gone to the Hub, she didn't appreciate being jerked around, the statuary was weirding her the hell out, and she didn't even have her damn camera.

All in all, she was in a bit of a state.

"All the organic stuff, fine, but is that really necessary?"
