What is Love? [Valentine's Date Event]

It's shaping up to be another average day on the Transmigration 9. Crew members are going about their business as usual and all is (to most appearances, at least) about as "well" as things ever are on the ship.

Some crew members are going to be stopped out of the blue by impact with a force field.

"Attention Crewmen: You have been chosen to participate in an experiment!" GLaDOS's voice informs. They're not alone, someone else that was nearby is also caught within the same narrow radius. "Participation is mandatory. Please try to relax and enjoy the experience, as this will improve the quality of the test results."

Clearly this is going to be a wonderful day for science.

"You and your new scientific partner are now on a date," GLaDOS goes on. "As it would be detrimental to our study of the date experience if you were to be separated, you must remain close to your partner for the duration of the experiment. This will be enforced with the Transmigration 9 Crewman Containment Field. Prolonged exposure to the Transmigration 9 Crewman Containment Field may have unexpected side-effects. While any side-effects encountered will be documented and your desire to offer yourself to science is commendable, it is not a necessary part of this experiment."

"You will be informed when the test has been completed. We would like to thank you in advance for your full cooperation in the experiment and failure to attempt to foil it in any way."

"The experiment has begun, so you may begin dating."

[OOC: The exact details of your characters' confinement are up to players' discretion. Being trapped in a sensorium or other stationary place is a possibility, as is being stuck in a sort of roving invisible force field hamster ball that only affects the two of you. How far partners can move apart is probably subject to whatever's fun but they ideally shouldn't be able to sit on opposite sides of a room ignoring one another the whole time.

ICly the "test" lasts for a few hours and you are free to godmode GLaDOS telling them the experiment is finished.

Ruffnut abandoned the wood and grumbled rolling up her sleeves. "I can't get this stupid barrier to drop!" She explained, her anger causing a familiar lightning to crackle along her knuckles.

"Thunderpop!" She roared and threw a hay maker full of lightning into the barrier...which promptly rejected her attack and sent her flying back, to the ground and rolling head over heels till she crashed into a pile of laundry. Her eyes were spinning and her hair stood out like a blond dandelion.

"Barrier?" Why was there a barrier...oh, that stupid thing that GLADOS did. She was supposed to actually care about that, wasn't she? Mindy was not about to give that AI the satisfaction of knowing she was mildly irritated.

"Ruff, I don't think you should-" But that was as far as she got before Ruffnut was knocked back into clothes and had her hair standing up like Bart Simpson. Of course Mindy's immediate reaction was to go help Ruffnut.

After, of course, laughing her ass off.

Ruffnut tried to pout, but Mindy's laughter was infectious and she grinned sheepishly, "Zetta told me that using cool attack names would make my attacks stronger or something...I think he told me that. Maybe I imagined it." She shrugged accepting Mindy's help (though the minute Mindy touched her girlfriend a spark of static shocked them both. Then again Mindy had to be developing a tolerance at this point.

Mindy did finally get Ruffnut back on her feet, and was already standing on her tippy toes to get her hair to calm down. the shock of electricity did scarcely more than knock the hat off her head, which she just shrugged about.

"He's probably right, but this is GLADOS we're talking about. Doubt we'll be able to get the barrier down that easily."

"So what then?" Ruff asked curious and bending at the knees to let Mindy fix her hair. She had gotten into a habit of just asking Mindy when she didn't understand or know things. Ruffnut held no illusions of which of them was smarter.

Mindy thought a moment as she hacked though Ruffnut's hair, getting through the tangles and wetting the palm of her hand and running it through her hair in an attempt to get her hair calmed down. "So now we do what the AI says and go out on a date. Not that we needed to be forced, but fuck it, I owe you one after that beauty pageant thing. So go get dressed."

She wasn't going to be the only one looking different, damn it.

Ruffnut rose an eyebrow in curiosity. "A date huh? Alright I can see that." She smiled and wandered over to her clean clothes thumbing through them with detached interest. Just because the pageant had taught her a thing or two about fashion didn't mean she paid THAT much attention to it.

Stripping down to her underwear shamelessly she pulled together some comfortable but clean jeans that hugged her legs, a black T-shirt with some kind of alien skull on it, and some leather studded gauntlets.

No make up. No earrings. She didn't have the patience for it.

"Ruff, don't just strip..." Christ, why did SHE have to be the one to say this shit? If anything Ruffnut was the one that had more to hide! Of course, Ruffnut was also not shy about her body whereas the body changes in Mindy were severely pissing her off. In other words? Trying to tell Ruffnut to be more modest when they were alone would go over as well as telling Ruffnut to tone it down in fighting.

What she DID wear, however, definitely drew her. If no one knew where she was from, Ruff could have been walking right down St. Marks, getting looks from no one. If anything, looking at her now made Mindy nostalgic, and she couldn't help smiling.

Make up? Earrings? Bitch please.

"You look good Ruff," she said, wondering if she looked TOO dressed in comparison. "Now what are you gonna do with the hair?"

Ruff grinned sheepishly at the comment and when she turned to look at her hair in the mirror she stopped to wonder just when she had started caring about how she looked?

Her hair was less of a disaster area the usual. Another small change she had made since the universe decided she was model material was she had started brushing more regularly. Still it had obvious signs of neglect and she pulled the battered braids out to shake her blond mane free. Some risidual static build up caused parts of it to drift and float until she touched the metal of the vanity mirror and discharged it.

Mindy really liked the changed. Granted, she had always liked Ruffnut the way she was, but the changes had been welcomes ones, and she knew they were from that modeling thing.

She went for a brush and started to attack the long long, though not before shooing some water on it firs. She would have killed anyone before admitting that she liked this, being able to maintain her girlfriend's hair, hell, being able acknowledge she actually HAD one to begin with.

"What do you want to do today, Ruffnut?" She asked, working on braiding her hair.

And the feeling was clearly mutual as Ruffnut closed her eyes allowing Mindy to groom her. Feeling a new sort of pleasure from allowing that one special girl to see her actually giving a damn about her looks, and to help her with them.

Plus it ensured that she looked however Mindy liked. Mindy's approval was more important then anyone elses at this point. She wondered just when that shift had happened...?

"Uh...I dunno." She confessed a look of puzzlement on her face. "Back home a date was usually you know...hike in the woods. Dinner at the tavern. Maybe go for a swim or something. N-not that I've ever been on one." She added hastily, and instantly wondered why she felt the need to clarify.

Just what was this relationship turning her into?

Mindy couldn't help but like his: she had never so much as had a doll when she was young(er), and the only way she would have felt comfortable with hair was Ruff's anyway. She didn't know why, but it made her feel like, maybe one day, she might be maternal and not cold and unfeeling, where she usually felt herself steering.

"Oh shut up man," she said, shoving Ruffnut. "I wouldn't have cared if you dated some viking back then! What do I look like? But I'll tell you what: if that's what a viking date is like, then we should do all of that. So what, hiking first, then Tavern and then swimming? Sounds fine with me."

She'd have to change into boots though.

Ruffnut snickered "Yeah but if I had dated anyone even if you and I were together you'd still wanna punch him and remind the world why I chose you over him." She teased eyes closed, relaxing into the pampering in a way she never imagined. Who knew something as silly as hair could be for more then keeping warm and looking fierce?

"How are we gonna do any of that if we can't get out of here though?"

"Yeah, but its not like it'd make sense to be jealous now. Your world and my world is gone, and now we're here. Everything is different now. Like, how I'm doing your hair and you're actually letting me. Who could have predicted that was gonna happen?"

She grinned. "Who says we can't get out? We just can't be apart, right? I have no problem with that."

"Yeah I guess your right." She laughed softly and then met Mindy's eyes in the mirror. "It's cuz we're awesome. You can't predict what we're gonna do next."

At Mindy's words Ruff's cheeks went red, embarrassed that she hadn't figured it out sooner. "So all we gotta do is leave at the same time?"

Way to state the obvious Ruffnut. Not that she was too bothered by Ruff tooting their own horn, she was just more inclined to show, rather than tell people how she did stuff. Being unpredictable was like that.

"Yeah," Mindy said. "It really wouldn't make sense for GLADOS to do his dumb experiment and have us in the same place, would it?"

"Since when have GLADOS or Stacy ever cared about what made sense?" Ruffnut countered. with a snicker.

She gave her reflection another look to see what Mindy was doing with her hair, not that she was in a hurry. No one could tell her how fast or slow to spend her time with Mindy.

"Stacy barely makes a decision anyway, you know that," Mindy said, shaking her head, "and GLADOS is still a robot based on logic even if she is a bitch about it. We'd have to actually be having fun in order for the stupid experiment to work."

If you believed that.

The hair looked nice though: it was in a long braid, and somehow Mindy had managed to give Ruffnu tidy bangs. Go figure.

Ruff rolled her eyes "Logic pft. What has logic ever done for anyone?"

Sometimes you really had to wonder about how much she was kidding when she said things like that.

"Ready to go then?" She stood up shaking her head to admire her braid.

"Well living is definitely good," Mindy said, punching her arm. "You need logic in everything you do. You might call it something different, like instinct or viking...I dunno, knowability or some shit, but either way its logic."

Even Mindy was never sure, hence why she tended to clarify these things.

"Yeah, Sensoriums," she said without hesitation. "I'm still from New York, so hiking is really not a thing there. I'm gonna have to depend on your memory."

Ruffnut let this one go, she usually did. Mindy had her opinions and she was so much better at arguing them the Ruffnut was.

It wasn't a long walk to the Sensorium. As it happened Ruffnut's tower was near one of the edges of the city. The minute they stepped into the sensorium it was Berk once more. The crisp Ocean air, the scent of some kind of meat being cooked over a fire. Sweaty musclebound men and women lumbering about working on houses or doing chores.

Ruffnut sighed and there was a visible change in her. Whenever she was in a place she felt comfortable like her tower or Berk she was more confident. She walked with a spring in her step and a smile on her face a little wider then usual.

She never broke stride and led Mindy through the town. Some of the locals were staring at them walking hand in hand like...well girlfriends.

It was fine for Mindy: all she wanted was to make sure that Ruffnut started to use her head a little more, so if a fight like that DID break out, she would be ready. No point in thinking that stuff about fights now though: they were trying to enjoy themselves.

Mindy wondered how well she concealed it, but she always did like coming to Ruffnut's perception of Berk. It was her idea of a place you might vacation on New York as a summer home, minus all the ritzy assholes and obnoxious tourist crap. She loved the smells, the people, the overall feeling that the place would last so long as its inhabitants were willing to try and save it.

Of course, she hadn't actually come to Berk in quite the way that she was now: dressed down, no thought of fighting, holding hands with her girlfriend. Despite knowing they weren't real, sghe still found herself reddening slightly.

Ruffnut was oblivious to most of it till about halfway through town. Then she caught the blush out of the corner of her eye and grinned wickedly.

Without warning she turned sharply and locked lips with Mindy grinding all the activity in Berk to a dead stop.

Really Ruffnut? Then again, Mindy was usually the aggressor in most things, so this was a rather sharp turn of events. True, Mindy WAS getting older now, and therefore looking a less like jailbait, but this was still pretty mortifying.

Not that she didn't kiss back. She wasn't a dead fish, after all.

And because this was Ruffnut's imagination, the vikings applauded and cheered like the girls were long lost war heroes come home. Which they sort of were.

Ruffnut smirked into the kiss and when it broke tried to resume her walk through town playing it cool.
