What is Love? [Valentine's Date Event]

It's shaping up to be another average day on the Transmigration 9. Crew members are going about their business as usual and all is (to most appearances, at least) about as "well" as things ever are on the ship.

Some crew members are going to be stopped out of the blue by impact with a force field.

"Attention Crewmen: You have been chosen to participate in an experiment!" GLaDOS's voice informs. They're not alone, someone else that was nearby is also caught within the same narrow radius. "Participation is mandatory. Please try to relax and enjoy the experience, as this will improve the quality of the test results."

Clearly this is going to be a wonderful day for science.

"You and your new scientific partner are now on a date," GLaDOS goes on. "As it would be detrimental to our study of the date experience if you were to be separated, you must remain close to your partner for the duration of the experiment. This will be enforced with the Transmigration 9 Crewman Containment Field. Prolonged exposure to the Transmigration 9 Crewman Containment Field may have unexpected side-effects. While any side-effects encountered will be documented and your desire to offer yourself to science is commendable, it is not a necessary part of this experiment."

"You will be informed when the test has been completed. We would like to thank you in advance for your full cooperation in the experiment and failure to attempt to foil it in any way."

"The experiment has begun, so you may begin dating."

[OOC: The exact details of your characters' confinement are up to players' discretion. Being trapped in a sensorium or other stationary place is a possibility, as is being stuck in a sort of roving invisible force field hamster ball that only affects the two of you. How far partners can move apart is probably subject to whatever's fun but they ideally shouldn't be able to sit on opposite sides of a room ignoring one another the whole time.

ICly the "test" lasts for a few hours and you are free to godmode GLaDOS telling them the experiment is finished.

Ruff took the shot right between the eyes and laughed slapping the water hard to splash back. "That's your department!" She teased.

Mindy splashed a little harder, drenching the girl. "Well now I'm not doing the thinking, so its your turn! Show me what you got!"

Ruff laughed in fierce opposition and slapped the water again counting the tiny water war. It wasn't particularly well thought out but she was beyond caring.

"ATTACK FROM ABOVE!" Yes, somehow, Mindy had managed to disappear in the water, find a high enough rocky precipice and was able to HURL herself at the unsuspecting viking, making by far the biggest splash of all.

Ruff was blasted out of the water like a depth charge had been ignited under her sending her head over heels before belly flopping back into the water with a loud SLAP!

Mindy watched her soar up in the air and then fall with a loud slap, wincing but grinning all the same. She paddled over to Ruffnut, waiting until the girl finally surfaced.

"Ok, before we continue I did...sorta...get you something, all right?"

Ruff blinked ocean water out of her eyes. "Really?" She lit up even more, "Aw I didn't get you anything!" Of course this date had been rather impromtu but it seemed like Mindy was always spoiling her and taking care of her.

Mindy rolled her eyes. "So? You have plenty of shit to think about, don't worry about getting me everything all the time! I just saw this and thought of you, so I got it. If anything, maybe its me being the fucking weird one. Whatever."

This was Mindy's way of trying to say Its ok Ruffnut, I just really wanted to make you happy. Good luck getting her to say it exactly that way though.

She had already paddled onto shore, and then came back in the water, showing Ruffnut this.

"It's something you wear around your ankle," she said, looking suddenly very interested in the water. "I saw it and I thought of you. Everyone thinks you're just a dumb viking, or underestimates you. So...like this anklet's not able to be seen by everyone, no one can see all the pretty stuff you have, they have to actually really look for it."

She didn't think Ruffnut was dumb, but if people were stupid enough to think that, their loss.

Ruffnut followed her to shore, and was so stunned she even forgot she was supposed to be wet and was instantly dry.

"I...wow..." She stared at the little trinket taking it delicately. Her face red, "No ones ever given me something like this before..." All the gifts she had gotten before were functional. This was purely for looks and sentiment.

Before Mindy could question her choice Ruff gave her an uncharacteristically soft kiss that hung on and drug out long and quiet.

"I wanted you to have something that wasn't just another shield or sword. I know you like those things, but this needed to be special, something that only you and I can know about. You know what I mean?"

Evidently she did, because she was swept in a long, soft kiss she returned, arms wrapping around the taller girl's back. Apparently GLADOS's experiment was going in well. She had no idea if they could leave or not, and frankly she didn't care. She just wanted to stay like this, with Ruffnut, a long time.

And she could, as long as she wanted. The blond viking girl wasn't about to hurry things along. Every few minutes with Mindy was like a rush of exhilaration and joy like jumping off a cliff or running into battle.

When Mindy broke the kiss, she swam into the water, but not, it seemed, to take a swim. She reached under the water then came up, hand behind her back. Whens she was at level with Ruffnut she reached over and pinned a waterlily behind her ear.

"There," she said quietly, smiling. "Look at yourself in the water, Ruff. You're just as pretty here as when you're in battle or in a pageant show, in my eyes."

Ruff squirmed shyly feeling her face burning with embarrassment and a shy smile that only Mindy ever got to see.

Obediently she looked to her reflection in the water. She looked older then she would have guessed. Then again she had been on Stacy for some time hadn't she?

"Y-you're...really good at this stuff." She mumbled.

"I'm playing it by ear," she admitted. "It all comes down to risk, even what we have. You could have made this really awkward by laughing in my face at how girly and dumb I'm being. But I think you and I both know we went into this with risk. You just make me do this sh-stuff like this. It suits you."

She swallowed. "And honestly? This was sorta how I was hoping tonight would end."

Ruffnut's blush wasn't going to be fading anytime soon. Instead she sat down gently on the shore taking Mindy's hand and pulling her down with her.

"I really never figured this sort of stuff was gonna happen you know?" She muttered leaning against the smaller girl. "But I'm really...really glad it did. It feels...nice. Even if it's like...mushy and stuff."

Mindy was fine sitting down with her. She could see that Ruffnut was still having difficulties actually talking about how they felt: hell, Mindy knew what that was like. Everything came harder to someone who had never really interacted with an actual social setting, but somehow she managed to muddle through, even here.

"Nah, me neither," she said, gently stroking Ruffnut's hair. "I mean, everyone I get close to sorta dies on me, and its like every day, I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop: we all get killed, or Lash and the Overlord gets podded. But the one thing I can't think about, won't, is something happening to you. It's the first time I can ever remember feeling that way. Everyone else who dies, I expect it: I even did when dad died, or I would have been worse off when it happens. Everyone dies. I just don't want to think about life on the ship without you in it."

Ruffnut smiled and pinched Mindy playfully.

"You're gloomy. But it's cute." She teased and gave a peck on the forehead. "I'm not going anywhere. Even if I die I'll be your ghost girlfriend. Hana can make that happen I think."

Mindy made a pfft noise and splashed her half heartedly."If you die and I'm still alive I'm bringing you back. You don't think I'm going to live in this place with all these assholes without you, do you?"

She pinched her back, on the butt, just so she got the picture of seriousness Mindy could be even when being playful.

Ruff yelped at the pinch and snickered wickedly, "The guardians of the afterlife will never know what hit them when you come to get me."

"It's only a matter of time before we figure something like that out anyway," Mindy said, then leaned over and stroked her shoulder. "All in all, a perfect day."
